Waiting A Year Behind On Games?

edytwinky

CAGiversary!
Not sure if it has been posted here but I thought I'd ask.

Do any of you guys wait a year behind on getting games? I have a Wii and a 360 and really have no problem on being a year behind on games?

I just don't like paying $49.99-$59.99 on games I would play just as much as a used game I can get. Just my opinion I guess. There really isn't any game that I have to get the day it comes out.

For most I try to. Or hope for a price drop before then. I should've been more patient on Lego Star Wars, I got it for $40, and now you can find it everywhere on sale for $20 or less. XP I've been bad about it this year.

Often you forget about games though if you let them go long enough, since the things most prevalent in your mind are the things currently being released/advertised/talked about.

Unless a sale comes up, and people go, this game was great.

I recommend keeping a text file around with a list that you can revisit whenever theres a buy 2 get 1 free sale or something.

If you had a game plan like some of us here this wouldn't be a problem at all. It all depends on if you keep your games because if you don't just use trade-in deals to get the newer games for way less than retail by getting a bunch of cheap games then use their trade values to buy games. It is only hard to do if you don't have a lot of stores around you to help you with cheap games. Have been doing this before CAG and still do it til this day.

I usually do. Except for games that I really, really, anticipate (That being Super Smash Bros. Brawl), I say "wait it out".

Bad idea buying Pokemon Colloseum at full price when it was just released :(

If I wanna play it and I have the money, I'll get it. I can't even begin to imagine how far behind I would be in something like Halo or Soul Calibur 4 if I decided to wait until it was dirt cheap.

I dont even have a 360 or PS3 yet. I bought a Wii but that didnt feel next gen so I sold it. The only real next gen games I played were Gears of War, and some of the Orange box on the PC. Other than the PC I rock the PS2, Gamecube, or PSP. Im planning to get a PS3 this holiday season. :bouncy:

For buying games however I tend to wait for a price drop unless it is a bif sandbox type of game or RPG like Final Fantasy.

Absolutely. Hell, I don't even have a next (current?) gen system. Games are just as fun a year or two later and are way cheaper.

The exception to this is obviously multi-player over the internet games. You'd want to get those soon after release while lots of people are still playing them. I don't play those types of games anymore, though (mainly FPS, fighting, and sports games, it seems) so I don't care about that.

Depends on the game. If it's something I really wanted to play or an LE I worried would become difficult to find then I'll pick it up. The majority of my backlog is stuff I waited to drop significantly.

There should be a website to track games that you want, and the current prices of them.... I know there is one for console games, but it doesn't have any list options... and it doesn't cover computer games...

I don't wait for all games. Stuff like Gears 2 that I'm dying to play, and especially where it's something I don't want to get behind the curve on in the online play, I'll buy day one.

But for most sheer single player games I'll wait for a good deal, or to get them off of Goozex. Especially now that I have a good 7000+ points built up on Goozex, and keep it pretty stable as I tend to trade in most everything after beating it. So a lot of times stuff I request off of Goozex and end up trading back for the same amount of points I spent on it.

I don't have problems with forgetting games I'm interested in either as I have fairly limited tastes genre wise and only bother with games I consider AAA. So I end up with 10-15 games tops a year that I think are worthy of picking up. I guess I do kind of keep a list, as anything I don't buy at launch I just through up on my Goozex list and will keep it there until either I get matched up to receive it or find a good sale on the game and buy it and take it off my list.

I've never really been right on top of releases and its harder now since I have less time to play. I did buy Ninja Gaiden 2 on launch but that like a few other games are exceptions to the rule. I barely ever pay more than $10-$20 for a game at this point. If a game is good it will be just as good a year later.

I don't have a PS3 or Xbox 360 yet, so the temptation of $60 new games is not a problem for me. :) But even for PS2, Wii, PSP, and DS games, I always try to avoid paying MSRP. Sometimes that just means finding a good deal or coupon on CAG, but if it means waiting for a price drop, I have no problem with that. I don't really feel like I need to be on the cutting edge anyway; I'll probably be working through my PS2 backlog for the next several years, and that's just fine with me.

It really depends on the games or the sales. For the most part, I am more than a year behind on games (just this weekend, I finally got around to putting more than 30 minutes into Psi Ops on the Xbox).

But, it depends on the game/sale. I got SSBB for $30 this summer on sale, so I grabbed it (figuring with a Nintendo game, I may not see a better price on it 5 years from now). I got Galaxy last Christmas for the same reasons (at $37) and I got Halo 3 and GTA4 shortly after release.

But, for the most part, I'm quite a bit behind on games. It's actually nice to wait on games and see if they are worth it. It's funny how games are talked about ad nauseum until they come out, then they fall right off. I really thought I'd break not playing MGS4 at launch, but after the first week or so, it's funny how all the hype dies down, and everyone has moved on to the next big thing.

I could stop buying games now and have enough to carry me 2 even 3 years, the backlog of ps and ps2 rpgs alone could do it. There are games I probably will never get around to.
Then I waited 3 years on pc games until I built a new system.
But I bought other titles, like World of Goo, immediately even if I was in the middle of playing other games because the price was low and it looked awesome.

If the msrp is under $30 and it looks good, I often pick it up anyway.

I buy games whenever it is most economically advantageous. If I can get a price that will allow me to sell it again after beating, or if I can get a good deal, or if it's a game I really want that won't lower in price, that all determines when I buy a game.

I do wait on games now. Not sure if it's a year though.
I think I will only pay full price on 2 games this year. Killzone 2 and Splinter Cell: Conviction. The others I'm interested in have a strict $15-20$ limit. If I can't get it for that price then I wait till it drops to

The only that sucks is for sports game. I really want to buy NBA 2K9 right now and can't seem to find it used anywhere.
Yes, but only on single player games. It's almost impossible to get multiplayer achievements on games more than a year after release.
I agree. I've picked up some games on clearance for cheap only to find out either the on-line server is closed or just plain dead. Some games like the NBA 2k7 and 2k8 you can't even get all the achivements b/c they are time sensitive. You miss the date, you don't get 100%. I think that is stoopid but that's a whole other discussion.

I've got a huge backlog. I don't get that much time to play so I have plenty that I got really cheap that aren't even open. I think I've only bought 1 or 2 at full or near MSRP and those I do continue to play b/c I like them.

I'm falling behind at the moment but that's pretty much intentional. I've been psyched for Fallout 3 for so long that it is literally all I want to play at the moment. Buying anything else would either cause me to stop playing Fallout 3 or neglect the new title. I'll resume some game buying in January.

There is one. Somewhere. It's probably something that the hardcore collectors use. I've seen several similar sites, but never needed them myself.

Well I know of a few collector style programs that catalog media, both offline and online, but I don't think it has many of the scripting to gather prices.

Yeah, I've not seen something like that.

I just use Goozex and throw everything I want on my requests list. If it's not something I want to spend new release level points on, I just put it on hold and can watch the points go down and activate it when it drops enough.

But I don't really need any kind of comprehensive list anyway as there aren't enough games that interest me enough to purchase per year that I can't remember them when I see a good price in speedy's ad threads etc. anyway.

Yes, that is exactly what I am doing right now. I am picking up all the games I wanted that were released from last holiday season, like Skate ($10 at Target), Tony Hawk's Proving Ground ($13.xx at CC), Simpson's Game for $12.48 from Target.com etc. No reason to pay full price when you can get the same games for $15 a year later.

Games with huge online components get bought ASAP, a year down the line can mean you meet either no one online or the super hardcore that have been honing their skills for a year and love fresh virgin meat. Single player stuff can wait until I can get it cheap.

For years i was always first in line to get games only to have them laying around. And since i still dont own a next gen console especially i definitely dont buy em brand new. Although when i get a ps3 that will change somewhat. But no hurry nowadays, plenty of entertainment! :bouncy:

I haven't really bought new games right at release since my middle school days with N64 games. Man was I naive! The latest full price game I got right at release was Persona 3: FES (only $28 shipped, so not that bad), and I've got Persona 4 preordered. Other than that, I've waited for ever other game to drop except Final Fantasy X.

PS2 is still good for me, I'm spending a lot less time on CAG since there are no new games for me.

Between the RPGs, anthologies and action-adventure titles on PS2 I could play it for the rest of my life.

Yeah i know that feeling, i played WoW almost full time for three years, but still had several games id never checked out. So for the past ten months have been playing various ps2 games and been having a lot of fun. Think i could easily play what i have now for at least another year without flinching...
