Wal-Mart is a horrid place! (rant/story)
Its true! I can vouch for that.

Walmarts in the East bay are always filthy and dirty. The floors look like they've never been cleaned and there are screaming kids everywhere. Pure bedlam!

But the biggest thing that everyone forgot to point out is that the prices are really nothing special. I never really saw any big deals there on anything; its not cheaper than Target.
Oh I so second this about the East Bay Walmarts. I dread having to go to the one on Hegenberger...
As already posted in this thread, being inside Walmart feels like an emergency waiting to happen. Targets do have a better class of shopper. Maybe the all the red makes them feel secure about themselves.

I think even in a GoodWill store, the people are better behaved and....kempt, shall we say. I think every person there knows what they are getting, so nothing crazy happens. I should keep handi-wipes in my car for after the visits there, though. Lots of dirty old things inside.
Haha yeah. I mean, is the extra $3 I'll save in total (maybe 15 cents off these chips, 27 cents off this deoderant) really worth the hassle of navigating through annoying kids and whoever else decides to drop 50 boxes of cereal from the shelf?

Jeez.

i rarely check out stuff at Wal-Mart. the only time of the day that i check that "place" would be around 10 PM. where people are like asleep, and few people shop.

and of course you can't help with the smell and the filthyness.

alternatives:
Safeway - groceries
Clothes - Kohl's
Target, BB, TRU - for just about anything.

We've had one of these threads before..I'll say it again

I don't like Target, at all

Great clearances, not so great store.

Wal-Mart has

Pocky
Anime
More electronics
More computer parts
Lots of soda
Big wide open halls
Super powerful air conditioning
Even more insane [though YMMV] clearances

Target has

Starbucks
Overpriced furniture
Snobby college students
Dead silence
World's most expensive poorly made clothing
Too much alcohol
Higher overall prices
Smaller freezer section

For Pocky I go to an Asian store...cheaper and more variety. For anime, I wait for the DDD sale or I buy it online...cheaper and more variety. For electronics/computer parts...I buy certain parts off NewEgg and for everything else (phones, etc.) I've ALWAYS been able to find it for cheaper online. Yeah, clearances are YMMV, I have yet to find a good clearance at my Walmart.

I don't understand why you'd want to frequent a store infested with White Trash. Even if you don't have a problem with that I'd think you'd recognize their shitty employment practices the world overall.

I like to shop at Wal-Mart because they have those awesome motorized buggies. Give me convenience or give me death!

We're getting a Supercenter. :(

What is up with those LOUD families that frequent Wally's? I've seen (heard) dozens of them, of all colors and sizes. 3 kids screaming, the mother yelling to the Grandma two alsles away: "Ma! Ma! Dey got dat denture cream you like".

I go to Wal-mart to buy my groceries. We usually save about $20 a week by buying there versus Publix or Kroger. I guess it's worth it, unless I have to go on Sunday morning. I've seen the cart races, the kids that yell and the people that walk like molasses. And by that, I mean walking as slow as possible, and spreading out to take up every square inch of aisle so you can't get by. And I'm not talking about fat people. It's mostly a certain race of people, but I actually think it has to do more with socio-economic status than race.

Man, I've been trying to find a time when I can go to Walmart and avoid hte crowds. But the place is crowded even on Monday mornings! And on Monday mornings, the people who are there are even worse... I'd go late at night but I'm not a big fan of going ANYWHERE in Oakland at night.

I hope you don't live in a small town otherwise Wal-Mart will be a Monopoly there. I don't care WHAT people say Wal-Mart has Monopolies, granted they're in small towns but new laws should be made to hold Wal-Mart accountable. The ONLY reason they've gotten away with Monopolies is they're not past x% in the whole country but does that matter if they have even ONE Monopoly in a rural community? I don't think it does.
Yes you can argue gas stations around but that's illogical and anyone knows it. Wal-Mart destroys any other real stores in these towns.

What Target do you go to? Even the bad Target new me has TONS of soda, bottles of every type of Starbucks you want, it's nice in there in the summer, furniture that is the same price as Walmart for almost the same thing.

You need to find a new Target, or move away from your state because I take it you are living in the South because no Target in the Northeast sells alcohol and I have never seen a druck in target. I can't say the same thing for Walmart. Even if Walmart had a mile of room between the isles (and they don't, they have room for MAYBE 2 carts) it still wouldn't be enough room ebcause the 19 children families would throw things everywhere. And of course Target doesn't have food, it's not theie thing, unless you find a SUPER Target. Only SUPER Walmart sells food too. The so called electronics + computer section is a joke. I only like one Walmart and that's in Palmer MA and only small families because their grandparents are also their brothers and uncles and aunts! Plus they have this 2 pound sub with 3 types of cheese and 4 types of meat for like $6.

Electronics - Target >>Wal-mart
Food - Wal-mart > Target
Clothes - Target>>>>>>>Wal-mart
Starbucks>>>Wal-mart McDonalds
Anime? Is that worth a response?

If you're shopping for your computer parts at Wal-mart, then I think I see where the problem lies.

Yeah, the South is cool. You can buy liquor and wine in grocery stores and there are even drive through liquor stores.

As for Target vs Wal-Mart. I shop at Target because there's more eye candy to get my mind off the fact that I'm pushing a friggin shopping cart around trying to figure out if I should buy the big or small bottle of shampoo. Target can't be beat for the skanky college girls or the desperate housewives.
Yeah, the South is cool. You can buy liquor and wine in grocery stores and there are even drive through liquor stores.
I live in TX and that's not how it goes here. They stop selling liquor at 9. No grocery stores sell it either, but they do sell wine.

Umm, I got a retail boxed firewire card with full drivers for $10. A USB 2.0 expansion for $10. Hard drives [western digital, seagate, maxtor] are pretty cheap without rebates. The only thing they don't have is CPU's and RAM but if you're in a rush for a part, it's perfect. I'm not saying they're an end all store but so far all I've seen at Target is expensive outdated optical drives and portable hard drives, while every Wal-Mart I've been to has 5 or so different video cards, a few hard drives, intenral and external optical drives, and a nice selection of accesories, etc

Electronics? How is Target superior to Wal-Mart? Target only sells GE and Monster branded cables, which are horribly expensive. My Wal-Mart sells Philips, RCA, Sony, Monster, and some off brands, all at varying prices. I know monoprice is cheaper, but if I can drive 5 minutes and get some component cables for $7 and a coax digital cable for $5, whenever wherever, that's convenient. As for everything else, it's the same issue. Look at Target's MP3 section, mostly iPod's and lots of cheap [useless] mp3 players. While Walmart has iPod's, but stocks a healthy selection of creative, panasonic, toshiba, as well as their own brands. Same thing for TV's, Target only has expensive Panasonics, overpriced RCA's, and junk Trutechs. God, you can't even buy cheap batteries at Target, the cheapest is Rayovac Maximum...what if I just need two junk AA's for a remotr control?

How the hell are Target's clothes any better than Wal-Marts? Neither is good, I haven't bought a piece of clothing at Wal-Mart in about three years and I've only ever bought one at Target, but if you break it down, how is it better? The women's section is filled with overpriced, cheaply made Luella products and plain looking Mossimo items, the men's section is much the same, just replace Luella with "trendy" graphic tees. At least the clothes at Wal-Mart are priced more closely to their actual value. Target prices their clothes as if they were Dillard's or an actual boutique.

Food? I agree with you there, the super Wal-Mart's usually have an equal selection compared to a Kroger's or a Safeway/Randall's. And since most of the times the seafood, butcher's, and bakery are run by the store and not the district, sometimes you can have really good bread and really good cuts of meat and fish. I think some products are priced higher than at other stores, but most of the time the prices are equal or a little lower.

Now as for Starbucks and McDonald's? How the hell is a satanic cult where a cup of coffee costs 50x as much as it costs to make, that only the purest entities of mass market consumerism prefer, better than a worldwide, internationally recognized fast food outlet, which has prices and products that are accesible to ALL consumers. We could say that McDonald's makes American unhealthy, but then again, SO DOES THE COFFEE HABIT! For $3 I can get a burger, some fries, and a drink [which can be soda, juice, and even COFFEE] What does that get me at Starbucks? A styrofoam cup and some hot water?

As for anime? What? You have a problem with it? Target had a whole SECTION dedicated to it as well as manga, when Target considered it to be "trendy" enough, when Target thought it was "cool" As soon as the doughy frat boys and pretentious "Oooh look at me I'm smart and liberated" bitches complained about it, the section was replaced with an aisle of "chick lit" and even more copies of "Friends". Yet at Wal-Mart, I can get the new Miyazaki's, new Fullmetals, and most of the big titles from ADV and Funimation, for MSRP, but usually for a nice $15. That's the nice thing about Wal-Mart, it's open, there's as many copies of the biggest blockbuster and the same variety of TV seasons and movies the mainstream likes, but yet you can still buy foreign films, anime, old cartoons, and old movies when they come out. Target excludes several people and caters strictly to its demographic core.

And I do live in the south, and while my Wal-Mart's sell beer and some drinks, every Target I've been to has a whole aisle dedicated to wine, half an aisle dedicated to mixed drinks, and entire aisle of tea and coffee. Once again, excluding everyone but its "demographic" I like that at Wal-Mart there's an entire aisle of juices and milks, an entire aisle of water and sports drinks, plus an entire aisle of soda and beverages, there's no "OH HEY, OUR STORE IS FOR TRENDY 20 SOMETHINGS" feel, there's "HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED, BUY IT AS YOU LIKE"

That's what Wal-Mart is, a corporation that's out to make money, and gets it by presenting the general public with what it could want or need, not just what it deems profitable.
amen, damn Quakers and their blue laws, and their stupid equality too
So I went to Wikipedia to see exactly what Blue Laws are/were and I found something that doesnt quite fit with the rest:

31. Whoever wears clothes trimmed with gold, silver, or bone lace, above two shillings by the yard, shall be presented by the grand jurors, and the selectmen shall tax the offender at £300 estate.

32. A debtor in prison, swearing he has no estate, shall be let out and sold, to make satisfaction.

33. Thee must wear rollerblades on every full moon.

34. Whoever sets a fire in the woods, and it burns a house, shall suffer death; and persons suspected of this crime shall be imprisoned, without benefit of bail.

35. Whoever brings cards or dice into this dominion shall pay a fine of £5.

And some counties are completely dry. Texas and Tennesse seem to be the anomalies. I mean the county where Jack Daniels is bottled is a dry county. Imagine my disappointment when I couldn't taste the good stuff like you can at the Budweiser plant in St Louis. The rest of the South, however, seems to want it's citizens to have as much access to alcohol as possible. Damn, I miss that drive thru liqour place in Durham, NC.

That's terrible. I"m sorry.

Over here where I live in CA, they stop selling at 2AM and thats too early.

When I was in Puerto Rico, it was awesome. They sell stronger beer and alcohol, they serve it all night, and there is no drinking age limit!

Walmarts near my place is not too crowded during weekday morning or early afternoon. Weekends are usually very crowded and the line is longest.

Damn. They stop selling beer at 12 here (1 on Saturdays). Since all liquor stores close at 9, there's only a few places (that sell more than liquor and beer) that stay open till 12. Those few places are the only ways to get a keg after 9.
1 trick (if you know someone in the military) is to have them go to the Class 6. They close at 11, and you can get liquor, beer, and kegs there.

I have 2 wal-mart supercenters 4 miles apart from me. Also one of those supercenters is 2 miles from a normal wal-mart. in 6 sq. miles I have 3 walmarts.
Against my better judgement I went into wal-mart today, and you know how there are always those familes consisting of like 19 people? They always seem to be having cart races (or something along those lines) right there in the middle of the store.

Well I so happen to get right in the middle of the race of the day, and got my ass handed to me by some buck toothed old decrepit bitch! Long story short this bitch cussed me out all the way to the register even after taking off my lower half. The final word is avoid Wal-Mart at all cost cause that place is a breeding ground for assholes.
Yeah, I work at Wal Mart and I'd say 90% of the people who come through are complete dumbasses. "Duuuuhhhhh, Where are the movies?" Where the fuck do you think they are? In crafts? fucking morons, but it's ok, if I couldn't make fun of the dumbasses, my job would be completely boring.

Sarau what the hell is wrong with tea? I'm trying to get off regular sweet shit and get onto Organic that and Lemonade. I miss my soda I'll admit though.
Sarau what the hell is wrong with tea? I'm trying to get off regular sweet shit and get onto Organic that and Lemonade. I miss my soda I'll admit though.
Nothing wrong with tea, I drink tea myself

I think soda gets a bad rap though, especially since no one seems to say anything about coffee [even though coffee is just as "bad" for your teeth, has 10x as much caffeine, and is way more acidic than soft drinks, and most people, make it just as sugary if not more sugary than soda]

I think it's all moderation, I wake up and drink some bottled water and a big glass of not from concentrate natural orange juice [simply orange, tropicana immunity defense, etc] with lunch I have a soda, in the middle of the day i usually have another soda, with dinner i have something like apple juice or a caffeine free soda, then the rest of the night I just have water. I also have water all through out the day [about 3 bottles, so around 6-7 cups total]

Couple this with a good vitamin supplement, some good food, and some exercise, and you're good to go.

walmart oakland is actually not bad (i work right across from it and i used to stay till 8pm/9pm and couple of times stayed till 3am and went in at 4am once). it's by the airport and it's new. if you don't want to go to oakland you can go to the one in san leandro (2 exits further) off of davis street. it depends on how late you want to go though because stores around these areas close at 9pm
