CAGiversary!
Hi everybody, I really want the original Sailor Moon Season #1 and Season #2, I have alot of games and alot of other stuff to trade. Also looking for Season 3 and Season 4. (S and Super S) If you have any real (NOT BOOTLEG!) Sailor moon dvd's ask me what I have and lets see if we can workout a trade! *Note this is my first thread so I dont know how to trade, but hopefully someone who is here will know!

GL with that, I bought all of the dvds when they were originally released, and the first two seasons are going for about $300-$400 apiece. I also believe the S and Super S box sets go for close to that, too. And no, I'm not willing to let them go. Also, wrong forum. But, you have good taste, and welcome to the forums.

$400? Seriously? Cripes, I sure am glad I have 'em, then!

It's more like $100 to $150 on ebay (for the non-bootleg versions) but yeah they are pretty pricey to pick up and impossible to find in brick and morter locations.

Yeah, I'm not sure where he got $400 from. Amazon has some dealers selling them new for $160 each. Here are the links if you'd like em:

Season One

Season Two

I think I found the S and Super S Series', but I'm not sure if they are the originals:

Sailor Moon: S

Sailor Moon: Super S

The ADV sets for seasons 1 and 2 do typically go for $200+ on ebay. In fact, I watched one end today for both that went for just over $400.

I picked up both sets from Rightstuf several years ago when they were clearanced out to $25 a piece. Wish I'd gotten more...

The movies were fairly easy to find, but it just took some patience - I snagged each for under $10 on half.com.

The Super S season is still fairly easy to find on used sites like secondspin.com. I got the complete season for $40 during one of their 20% off sales in 2007.

If you're serious about getting them, snag the seasons for $159.99 off Amazon. They were both put up recently by a new seller and considering how much lower they're going than the other sellers, I doubt they'll last long.

The price fluctuates- the last time I checked Sailor Moon prices, they were in the $300-400 range.

More importantly for the OP, the liscense for Sailor Moon is tied up right now- no one really knows if its money, issues with the US edits, or stinginess on the part of the manga creator- what we do know is no one around here is currently allowed to release Sailor Moon, and it doesn't look like that'll change anytime soon.

Save up.

ACtually, its a fairly simple problem, TV Tokyo, or Toei (I forget which) is holding very stubbornly onto a lot of their shows, and refusing to sell them to american companies. In fact, they recalled ADV's and Pioneer's licenses of Sailor moon a full year (maybe more) earlier than the licenses would have expired, and would not sell them to them. Did you know that at first when ADV licensed Sailor moon season one and two, they had planned to do an uncut dub of them? Too bad that we not only didn't get that, we got dvds with near bootleg quality video and audio. (that was a result of Toei not letting them remaster them (yes, I know its crazy, but it had something to do with the licensing of the show), because I'm almost sure that if they had been allowed to remaster them, ADV would have remastered them.)

If you are really picky, you should know that there were some episodes omitted from some of the seasons, so technically, they are not complete. Plus, season one and two have mono audio. Perhaps those may persuade you to hold on to your cash and just hope that Toei will allow an R1 anime company to license and/or distribute Sailor Moon in the future. Though we'll never know if we'll ever see the series stateside again. It remains a mystery to me just why Toei is being so greedy considering Sailor Moon's popularity. It's obvious it would sell well and give them some income.

Super S is the easiest and cheapest to find. I believe it's still available on SecondSpin.com for around $40 with the 20% off sale. Though it is used, the set I got was in practically perfect condition except for a little tear to the top of the box that could easily be fixed with some glue.

If you're not one to really care for the complete sets, you can find the S series' singles on eBay from time to time.

That's one of about 3 variants I've heard on the matter.

I've also heard rights have reverted back to Naoko Takeuchi, who won't put it out again because she thinks the 'time has passed'.

I've heard the companies involved were so upset when they saw the TV edit the pulled out and won't let the American market have it again.

And I've heard Ms. Takeuchi is the one upset over the edits.

Not that the specifics really matter, becuase the end result is the same: No new Sailor Moon for the US.

I got S & Super S seasons and movie box set. I didn't know it's pricey now :) I just opened S season yesterday and finished 1 disc. Super S & the movie set still new & sealed :)

I might potentially want to get sell my Pioneer released Sailor Moon S volume 1, 2, 6 and SuperS volume 7 DVDs... If I decide to, I'll post back here again. Those prices for the "complete" season sets are insane btw. Sheesh.

lol im so lazy when it comes to searching for items. thanks for the links.

Looks like Season 3 (Sailor Moon S) is the scalpers' choice this time around - $300+ on Amazon.

If I were Ms. Takeuchi, I'd approve a license rescue upon seeing these ri-god-damn-diculous aftermarket prices. To take advantage of the fans like this makes my skin crawl.

At one point earlier this year, Season 2 was $700. Disgusting.

Sorry for the threadjack, but I've been religiously pissed off about this issue for the last few years, though I own all 4 boxsets already.

I just wish the powers that be would listen to us once in a while - two things have come out of the anime poll Toei Animation issued last year: jack and shit. Ok, we got Precure uncut (digital only though. meh). But poor Sailor Moon continues to bide her time in licensing hell, covered in enough red tape to make every bureaucrat in the known universe jealous.

I'd like Ms. Takeuchi to see some of the cash that is going to the bootleggers and the scalpers. However, with the ball in her court, she seems to have switched it for one made of lead and continues to drop it on our feet.

In short - good luck, OP. You'll NEED it.

i have the two ADV box sets of season 1 and 2 that i wouldn't mind selling. i had no idea they were worth so much. wow. i haven't even opened the season 2 box set yet but who would have thought?

Man I hope these aren't worth that much, I got the whole series sets, those sets you've mentioned of season 1 and 2 and the old Geneon Sailor Moon Sailor Stars and movies sets for my ex back then... :whistle2:# :dunce:

All I know is I wouldn't splurge too much on these unless they are must-haves, cause money talks and I wouldn't be shocked if right after you get them all, they decide to release a whole series collection stateside for the cost of like, one of those complete seasons... I know troubles and licensing issues and all that, but that didn't stop many other sets with similar problems of the sort of coming out with releases. It just needs some sort of revival or surge of popularity to come back then new boxsets will probably find a way to come out I'm gonna bet. Also, as another poster said, the quality of the releases are terrible and I generally do not complain about DVD picture quality, the audio is very awful as well.
Region 2 boxsets? Man those are frickin' expensive. I've heard they're like $500+ just for a season boxset.
If you're looking for first print R2 Toei Japanese sets with bonuses, then they're extremely expensive since most volumes are long out of print. First prints for each series are as follows:

1st Series: Stickers, Box with Vol.7/8 Set
R: Notebooks, Box with Vol. 8
S: 3D-Hologram Trading Cards, Box with Vol. 7
SuperS: Cellphone cleaner pad, Box with Vol. 7
Sailor Stars: Jigsaw Puzzles, Box with Vol. 6

Also, there was a limited edition movie set (the first Sailormoon anime on DVD in Japan) with some goodies, like mini replicas of the movie program books and a bonus disc. Otherwise, the discs themselves are identical to the regular pressings (even to the awful quality silk-screens on the discs).

HMV Japan is having a Buy 4, save 25% sale right now on all DVDs. Without tax, each volume is approx. 2,849 yen each, plus shipping (about $5 per volume?). Makes it around $37 per volume due to the awful yen rate right now. So for around $225, you can get the official Sailorstars set.

I bought all the US discs (ADV boxes and Pioneer singles) when Toei stopped the Japanese release after the first series back around 2002. After I finished collecting the US sets, they started releasing the Japanese discs in 2004 again, so now I have both.

In comparison of the discs, the Japanese one definitely has the upper hand. Not perfect video quality (lots of dirt and grain), but the colors definitely are much brighter. Some early episodes (like the very first episode) are oversaturated, but most are pretty good.

Also, the aspect ratio is off on the Pioneer sets. The screen on early S episodes are cropped on all sides, so part of the picture is missing. If you can read Japanese, some of the text on the screen gets cut off because of this. By mid-season, this is corrected though. Also, the video on all the episodes is slightly enlongated. It's not distracting, but faces lose their roundness. I'm not sure if the aspect ratio on the Japanese R2 sets are 100% correct either as the "non-text" ending for the last Sailor Stars episode seems to show more on all sides.

The Pioneer movie releases are a mixed bag. They present the movies without the widescreen bars, so you actually see more of the picture. Unfortunately, bad video quality does bring it down a notch.

Also, dont know if your interested, I have a Final fantasy Unlimited boxset that was only viewed once per disk, brand new and no scratches, willing to trade for boxsets too... also have Pokemon Season 1.... and if i buy PLEASE DONT JACK UP THE PRICE, im only 15 so im trying to get the best deal I can...

Used to own them back in the day, heck 150 a set isn't bad. Damn things cost 100 to begin with, I ended up getting rid of mine when I started doing a quality over quantity mindset with my collection.

I'm fairly certain that if you can find someone currently attending Indiana University at Bloomington, or can find someone in the area here on the boards, they can mosey over to Tracks in Downtown Bloomington. Last I checked before I graduated they had Season 1 sitting there for a solid several months at $100. Excellent condition, to boot.

The other anime there...eh. It's a used media store but it's not bad. They just happen to know their prices. I'd wager dollars to donuts the set is still there, since their anime merchandise rarely, if ever, moves. It may be a more "inexpensive" option.
