if you order something at best buy, they hold the fund from your account UNTIL the item ships. so youre out the money in your bank account/credit card until they a) ship your order or b)you cancel the order. i always thought they held the money to make sure it was there but then if they didnt ship, released it.

i post this warning because i didnt know this, and i dont know if anyone else does, but it might have cost me 90$ to find this out.
That is ass! What ever happened to charging for the order when it ships!!
they said they have to hold the money until it ships so that they make sure they get their money

yeah, i thought they didn't charge until the order left!

thanks for the heads up pun

Here's the full scoop, straight from their customer service (I had a similar problem, too)
"As soon as an order is placed online, the credit card is authorized for
the amount of the purchase to verify available credit. This amount is
not actually charged until:

* The delivery order ships from the warehouse, Or
* The store pick-up order is pulled from the shelf, Or
* 24 hours before a projection TV is to be delivered.

The length of time an authorization is held depends on the specific
financial institution. We encourage you to contact the bank that issued
your card for their policies regarding authorization holds."
Generally, credit and debit card are not charged until we either ship the item(s) to you or confirm store availability (at which time you will be charged only for the goods we have actually shipped along with any appropriate taxes or shipping charges). However, we may pre-authorize your order amount with your credit or debit card issuer at the time you place the order, which may have an effect on your available credit line. Please contact your credit card issuer for more information.
So if they don't stock this game for another year, they won't charge me for a year, but I can't spend that money for a year?

Messed up.

thats bullshit. the length of the hold DOES depned on you bank. HOWEVER bestbuy will simply place another hold the following day. thats just shady business..
6669, could you provide a link to that page you got that info off of? it could be most helpful
It came from an email I had sent them. That's the response they gave me, which didn't even answer the question I had asked.

Thanks for the heads up. I thought my on-line credit card activity looked weird. I was off by a bit but had no actual charges listed. Now I know why ...

What cost you $90, bounced checks?

yep, my account was runnin low, and a made a couple charges, which would have left it at $2, but since 27$ was gone, thats either 2 or 3 bounced transactions, which would be 60 or 90 dollars depending what came first

That sucks, sorry to hear that. Are you sure that the bestbuy holds won't roll off in a few days?

they should, but basically if my account is negative i get charged i was told.

i spent 40 mins at the bank and i heard about 100 times to call best buy and the bank has no clue what will happen with the hold or if i will be charged

i spent about 15 mins on the phone with best buy telling me to talk to the bank about it

its all one big loop that ends up with me getting screwed

Im assuming everyone is talkin about the 5 buck games. Are they ever gonna ship? I paid via credit card does that mean im not charged till it ships?

ok just an update on me. i ended up being ok with the bank, the teller i talked to even knew best buy had a bad rep!

im glad this didnt cost me anything but a little worrying, but im never buying from best buy online again. in all reality, i never have in the first place since the 3 orders i placed with them were all backordered/cancelled...

glad to hear it all worked out. Do you keep a check registery? One would think that if you wrote it all down you couldn't be overdrawn. If I spend $20 via the internet I write it down just like it is gone. My credit, debit and checks all come out of the same account so when i use any of them I put it in the same registry.
:)

Best Buy Holds are the reason I wasn't able to order several backordered items from them (they came back in stock - failed to charge me because my funds were "held", thus I had no funds available and t hen shipped my items to other people while I bitched to them - I even told them the problem before hand). I hate Best Buy.
