Weird Retron 5 Issue With SNES Controllers

I am having a really weird issue with the SNES Controller ports on my Retron 5.

This is my 2nd Retron 5, my first NES's port stopped working. So I contacted Hyperkin, and they replaced the console for free (save for shipping)

When the new console got here, I set it up to test it out, and found that my SNES controllers would not work with the console. They act like there is no input when plugged in, but everything else works fine.

So I contacted Hyperkin and they told me the Retron 5 has issues with older models of SNES Controllers (First production run). Well I had no other controllers to test with and no friends had the SNES still till last night.

I had a friend over for a small party, he brought SNES controllers.... and we learned something odd.

HIS controllers work perfectly in the Player 1 port, while MY controllers work without issue in the Player 2 port.
BUT mine do not work in Player 1, and his do not work in Player.

So what's going on?

Has anyone else experienced this?
I saw a small REDDIT thread, but, yea not sure.

That is indeed weird, and it sounds like a firmware fix could solve it. It's stuff like this that gives me a good reason to not buy these Hyperkin things. If I wanted to play my original games, I'd buy the original systems. If I want something more accessible and on HDMI, I'd consider something like a Raspberry Pi or Wii U.

That is crazy. I had some Doc's band controllers that i used on mine and they worked fine. Personal recommendation would be the 8bitdo controllers though, looks and feels like an SNES controller but it bluetooth and works with the R5.

Definitely get back a hold of hyperkin and see if they will swap it out though, if not then maybe look into the 8bitdo.
