Well, I took the plunge: Beast Wars Transformers Season One

William Smith

CAGiversary!
I have been on the fence about this show for quite sometime. I remember my son watching it and being amazed by; first the CG work and second by the strong characters. But who wants to take a $52.19 (Amazon) plunge? Well, I found it today at Circuit City for $39.99 and decided.... ah, what the hell??

Well, the CG work for Season One, at least the first 3 eps. seems fairly dated and yet STILL has some particularly beautiful moments. The bot transformation are still a marvel to see and yeah, the backdrops are often sparse, and yet I still BELIEVE they exist for the sake of the characters, which for me is a must.

The voice acting and character development on the first 3 episodes is actually beyond what I hoped. Easily taking up the slack for some of the dated visuals...

This for me, so far is a slam dunk purchase and the characters have that sort of instant chemistry that isn't forced. Some of the Predicons are annoying but alls fair in love and Beast Wars, eh??

I bought Season Two also but kept it wrapped up just in case this one wasn't worth beans, but it looks like I'm keeping both b/c the general word is that the 1st season is the worst season...!! Can't wait to see Season Two!!

Yeah, I heard that. Thanks for the heads up.

Question: Does Season 3 just get carried away? A lot of TV shows either blossom in S3 or the show is over and they have run out of ideas and just start on a downward trend.

Also, I must say I know why this show was good. If you listen to the writers interviews on Disc4 they are so enthusiastic you'd think they are going to piss themselves. That same exuberance translates so well to the screen. Nice to see my purchase was justified.

Only prob: Even an Amazon reviewer pointed this out; Disc One Ep 1 and 5 have loud pops and hisses when 5.1DD is selected... has that been fixed? Did I get an early pressing...?

I dunno if I'd say Season 3 gets carried away...but I do think it was a let down from season 2. Dunno why exactly, it just seemed like they knew it would be the last season and they just kinda pushed out some of the last episodes. But if liked the 1st 2 seasons then season 3 is still worth you time and money IMO.

Don't dooo this to me!! :) Thanks.

And for anyone interested this is for kids and adults alike. Season one seems a bit 'lite' but there are times when I forget this is a kids show entirely.... a lot of the times.

I thought Rhinox would have been second in command after Optimus Primal...(On a particular ep. I was watching)? Cool how Rattrap stepped up. Really nice to see the show isn't so predictable.

Thanks but for a couple bucks more @ $39.99 I like the in hand factor rather than the ''well we shipped it factor'' or the ''oh, the case is smashed factor''.

I tend to only do mail order when it is dramatically less, at least 30-40%.

Season 3 is when hasbro got pushy as hell and demanded more characters for toys, personally I didn't like it all that much but it is the ending, for 20 you could do worse.

Well, I finished DISC ONE of Season One... and ya know what...? To me that one disc was worth the price for the set.

There is something about this series that really makes me feel as though I am watching 'true pioneering' through the CG work. Like everything I'm seeing was made from a labor of love and is truly unique.

So many clever plot points injected right from the beginning: Dinobot 'the traitor' being a Maximal always has an edge to his presence; the orbiting stasis pods with the remaining crew orbiting the planet that can 'drop in' at any time; the fact they have to remain in beast mode but CAN change into robot form for short bursts is just pure genius.

I bought this for my son and I to watch but I'm finding it hard to not just watch them all in the time he returns from his moms:)

The five episode set when they discover the Ark is pure genious. That premiered on Cartoon Network.

Also, I like the fact that as the series develops the Decepticons aren't just the "Bad Guys." They imply that the Decepticons no longer have a place in Cybertronian society. So they started to feel "oppressed" by the Autobots, even though that wasn't the case. They had no purpose so they became effectively second class citizens. So they rebelled and started the Great War to take over.

They reveal some of that when a Decepticon shows up. I won't say which Decepticon because it would ruin the suprise. But that's in a later season.
