Were there ever any successful DS tunneling programs?

Were there ever any functional DS tunneling programs (play local area wifi games over a wireless router with someone else (essentialy an emulated LAN over a WAN))? I was just wondering because a few of my friends want to play Advanced Wars DS some time, but we are all at different colleges. I can find tunneling programs for almost every other console under the sun, but everything I have read about a DS program is from years ago (I figure that many groups gave up after Nintendo embraced their own online program).
