What Anime should I watch?

(see subject)

You can include Japanese-only titles (imports)

Just so there's no overlap, here's what I've already seen:
Starblazers - Princess Mononoke - Ghost Shell - Spirited Away - Read or Die OVA/tv series - Techni Muyo OVA - Please Twins/Teacher - Hack Twilight/Dusk & Sign - Xenosaga

What sort of shows do you like? Until I get a better idea for your anime tastes, I suggest the following shows/movies that almost anyone can enjoy...

Now & Then, Here & There
Cowboy Bebop
Perfect Blue
Metropolis
My Neighbor Totoro

Hell, you can even find Totoro for less than $6, and it's one of the best Ghibli films ever.

I know Kirin may disagree, but if you want an awesome action anime that has a pretty good plot, I'd say go watch Bleach. You'd have to BT it, since it hasn't been licensed yet (or you could import the DVDs), but it's well worth it.

Another awesome series to get into would be Fullmetal Alchemist. By far one of my favorite animes. Awesome story with enough action thrown in to make it appeal to both those who enjoy storyline and those who enjoy action.

I would suggest not watching anime, seeing as how it has become a poptart commercially driven assortment of abyssmal titles that all feature the same tired, overused plot lines and generally fall into categories of prude boy + hot women, mecha, or wacky zany anime funtime hour. It's appallingly bad.

That all said, there's very little worth checking out outside Cowboy Bebop, Big O, Trigun, and maybe a few others. On the movie front, get Vampire Hunter D (the original) and Akira.

I'd suggest you get Invader Zim and Home Movies instead. Both far eclipse any of the crap out today.

WOW LOOK, FAN SERVICE. OH BOY THAT MUST MEAN ITS A GOOD ANIME SERIES. God damn.

Anime that I've been watching while waiting for DCPD to call and take my vandalism report.

Gunslinger Girl - Pretty damned good but a little depressing.
Air - WTF?!
Girls Bravo - Boobie humor is always good.
Shuffle! - Couldn't get past the first 15 minutes.

Whoops, don't know how I forgot that one. Yeah, if you can make it through the first 12 or so episodes, Fullmetal Alchemist is great.

It's amazing how many times a person can be incorrect in only a few paragraphs. You've obviously not seen much anime.
I would suggest skimming this thread. Plenty of suggestions/mini-reviews in there.
But he'll have to sift through countless Naruto/Bleach posts to find any sort of worthwhile content. ;)

Yeah. The beginning is just decent, but it's necessary. Once it reaches episode 13, the show has you hooked and you just can't stop watching. There's a couple more lulls later on in the show, but on a whole, the show is just too great to pass up. The more I think about it, that's sorta how I feel about Mai-HiME. The beginning 9 or so episodes are just decent, but necessary, and then the show kicks it into overdrive.

Saikano. Someone else mentioned it. everyone needs to watch that show. I'll copy and paste a post I made at another forum:

Saishu Heiki Kanojo (commonly shortened to Saikano) or She, the Ultimate Weapon

A story about a high school couple, Shuji and Chise, that have just started dating. One day when Shuji witnesses a city being bombed he sees a new weapon wipe out all the enemy planes. When he goes to investigate he sees that the new weapon is actually his girlfriend.

The show deals with their relationship as they try to keep it normal while also dealing with the escalating war going on around them. Whenever I recommend this show I always make sure to warn people that it is extremely depressing. There are very few moments of happiness. So if you don't like to be sad, stay far away from this one. I've seen a lot of sad stories, and nothing has made me cry like this show has. At the same time it still is able to convey a very powerful message about the power of love.

So if you like love stories or just plain good ones, and can handle a lot of depression, you owe it to yourself to check this series out.

Info:
TV series, 13 episodes, 4 DVDs
Manga also available. 6 volumes.

Hmm, I'll give a brief list of anime I've enjoyed. Keep in mind I'm a big fan of the fantasy genre.
scryed, Magic Knight Rayearth, Slayers, Sorcerer Hunters, Vandread, Fushigi Yuugi, Pretear, Naruto, Scrapped Princess, Chobits, and Fruits Basket.
My best advice I can give is to check sites like animeondvd.com and animenewsnetwork.com to find reviews. (Or bigger databases like anidb.com, but those tend to have translated synopsis that are kinda bleh)

I really really enjoyed Cowboy Bebop. Samurai Champloo is pretty decent too. Those two are made by the same people. I also think Outlaw Star is definately worth a look.
But he'll have to sift through countless Naruto/Bleach posts to find any sort of worthwhile content. ;)
I did say skim.

Ranma 1/2 - It is expensive to buy all the seasons, the OVA, and movies but it is very entertaining. My favorite by far.

Big O - The story can be hard to follow but I like the interaction between Roger Smith and the android R. Dorothy Waynewright. There are two volumes and shouldn't be that expensive to pick up.

Fatal Fury the Motion Picture - Even if you aren't a fan of the games this is one great movie. Terry, Andy, and Mai try to prevent Laocorne Gaudemus from acquiring the all powerful Armor of Mars.

Goldenboy - If you like American Pie type humor than you need to see this. I don't typically enjoy that kind of humor but this show is hilarious.

I have more but I have to go for a bit...

How has no one mentioned Berserk? Excellent if you like fantasy, action, etc. For weird sci-fi, I'd recommend Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rahxephon.

I'll give you a couple of my favs, however, what I usually did was go to this site AnimeNfo where they have their Top 200 Anime list. While I don't swear by this list, it does give you some good viewing experiences and reviews of each one to go along with it.

Personally, I'd recommend

Vision of Escaflowne (sometimes known as just Escaflowne)
Saikano
RahXephon - but be prepared to be confused
Haibane Renmai
Ranma 1/2 is great - but looonnnggg
Anything by Hayao Miyazaki especially Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind

I've also heard good things about Noir, but I personally haven't watched it yet.

ah golden boy what a great anime that anime has some of the best 1 liners like this one i remember."I know i may be dim but its always dark before the glorious sunrise." I love that line. you can find the essential anime collection version which is two disc for 15 bucks YMMV at Best Buy...thats where i got mine.

if you also like other humorous type animes...maybe try
Ping Pong Club - outrargous, crude, perverted humour...every thing is too funny in this anime

Cromartie High School- its not your typical comedy of anime..the humour is more verbal than actions...this already ranks as one of my favs of all time. its also a little wierd but you will get over that after you die of laughter
Am I the only person on these boards who would recommend Gungrave?
That's gota be the most underrated anime in anime history.

I suggest
Naruto (its so damn long)
Gungrave (damn good)
Hellsing (damn good)
Bleach (starts off slow but its real good)
Elfen Lied (very bloody)
School Rumble (funny)
Am I the only person on these boards who would recommend Gungrave?
No way, I really loved it, especially the mafia arc, and I talk about & recommend it alot. But I'm not so sure anyone really listens to me.

Berserk has a shitty ending.

I would reccommend.

Onmyou Taisenki
Machine Robo Rescue
Transformers: Superlink
Transformers: Galaxy Force
Excel Saga
Gungrave
Golden Boy
Mahou Sentai MagiRanger (Not anime but still Japanese)
Kamen Rider Blade (same as above)
Gen Sei Shin Justirisers (same as above)

Some of my favorite animes:

Neon Genesis Evangelion (series)
Trigun
Love Hina (series)
Oh! My Goddess (series and movie)
Noir
Perfect Blue
Ranma 1/2
Am I the only person on these boards who would recommend Gungrave?
I have the first volume on DVD. So far it looks to be a solid series.

And Berserk is great tho it ends with a huge cliffhanger. I hope they do a second season and finish up the story.

I would recommend either Berserk or Great Teacher Onizuka. Depends on wether you like fantasy/action or comedy/action. But if you watch Berserk be prepared to continue with the manga which is still going (as you'll be depressed after the big cliffhanger). And another season of Berserk would be awsome although it probably won't hapen.

The ending was awesome. I nearly counted down the days until the last volume came out this week. :) An appropriate ending that tied in the mafia arc as well as previously unmentioned past aspects beautifully.

And I have to try out Berserk and Hellsing myself one of these days...when I have money again...

This is the only anime you will need for awhile. Best, anime I watched since Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
Yea, I haven't, because it's gotten so terrible lately that I can't stomach it anymore.

What's your point?
I do kinda see your point... if you watch nothing but anime long enough, you can't help but start noticing some things repeating... (Which is why I cannot bring myself to watch Madlax. I haven't finished Noir yet, I don't feel the need to re-collect it with new character designs. :? )

You will note, tho', that the OP hasn't seem much anime yet. There's a nice big backlog of good shows to go through, and no patterns to spot yet. So don't tell him to watch nothing, OK?

I reccomend a show called Tsukikage Ran. It's not for everyone. It's a spoof of old Japanese TV shows where a wandering samurai and his sidekick go around and do... stuff. Except the heroes are girls. If you don't mind the fairly slow pacing, it's got some good stuff in it. Plus, it's cheap. You should be able to get the whole 4 disc series for no more than $40.

For reviews, I reccomend animejump.com- these guys have great humor. Be sure to read the Bootleg Toy reviews, espeically Flying Headless Goku. :D

To say that Naruto comes even close to Cowboy Bebop is a slap in the face to Cowboy Bebop.

I like naruto, i haven't seen too much of Cowboy Bebop though. Naruto's last 10 or so episodes seems like the series is going down hill. It seems different
Strawberry Eggs is pretty good IMO.
Damn, I keep forgetting that one... I really need to buy my own set of this show...

That is a nice little show. I bought it on a review I read and I liked it a lot. It was interesting to see considering what Amawa-sensei had to do to get his job.

That's because they're all filler.

Most of the great ones have been mentioned, but Violinist of Hameln is a great action/fantasy.
St. Luminous Mission High had an interesting mystery story.
Kanon is one of the best romance/dramas I've ever seen
Ceres, Celestial Legends is great in the same light, but differs greatly.
Suzuka is new, seemed pretty humorous.
Viewtiful Joe is good since the game was too damn hard for me.

And if you like that whole 'real people' kind of television, Gokusen's an awesome j-drama.

The animation in Naruto seems different too. The charecters movements have a more fluid style to it. Have you guys heard of the anime "Monster"? I just watched the first 7 episodes. It seems pretty good.
