well im planning on getting a 800$ laptop
and i dont want a MAC and dont want a dell
all i know is toshiba = no good
what brands are reliable?
if u know any good deals please recommend them but im just lookin for reliable laptop brands/companies

Hmmmm I was going to say Dell but you said you don't want a dell. If your a gamer, maybe Alienware has some good laptops but I don't know if their reliable or not but they are made for gamers. Then again, you most likely aren't going to use it for games, are you?

why dont you want a dell ? If this is because of the battery problem, it is actually sony who makes the battery. Dell is still one of the better PC maker.

Since you dont want dell or toshiba I guess that leaves HP, Sony Vaio and Lenovo (former IBM). Dell is probably better.

If you want a good deal you should wait until Black Friday unless you need it right now, that's what I'm doing since I need a laptop, but want a good deal on one.

That totally kills of like half of the potential laptops, and Dell makes some good stuff at decent prices.

Most laptops are made by the same four or five companies in Taiwan, so to say "Toshiba=no good" doesn't make much sense to me.

If you don't plan to game heavily with it, I would suggest buying a cheap laptop at Best Buy, whether it is a Fujitsu, Toshiba, HP, or Lenovo, and buying the extended warranty program. If it does crap out, they'll give you a new one that is as good or better than the one you bought.

If you do plan to game, the best way to go is Alienware. Of course, you'll pay a premium for that.

Dell really is probably one of the best mass-market vendors so I don't know why you don't want one.

hmmm well i want a dell but my dad(the one whos pitching in the other 400) says no but i can convince him... i was wondering
how long does it take for the laptop to arrive at my house? lets say i order it oct 1st. when will it arrive?
also whats the diff between duo core and core 2 duo or is it the same thing?

QFT.
The only thing I have to add to that is don't pay a premium to get a Sony Vaio.
The extra premium you're paying is just for a prettier laptop.
Their support sucks (at least it did a few years ago when I owned a Vaio).

Just show him the discounts you can get and how you can configure it to exactly what you need without paying for junk you don't want. There's an awesome coupon over at FW (yeah yeah, don't hit me) that will give you 20% off $1,000 purchase. So you upgrade the base laptop (which is $650 but it is a Core Duo and not Core 2 Duo based laptop) to over $1,000, discount at 20%, means you got a superior laptop at $800 with no need for rebates or the God-forsaken groups of Black Friday. I've heard Dell has good deals in late fall/early Winter, so it might be worth it to wait. However if you want it now, this is a pretty good deal, too.

I have no experience with Dell warranties, so I can't say how good they are if you're screwed. Personally, I hate laptops as they seem to break down all the time and are so expensive to fix or upgrade compared to desktops. This is one of the reasons why I wouldn't invest in a very expensive laptop. This is also why I recommend the Best Buy warranty route if you do choose to buy from there (which has bonuses, including the Reward Zone deal as well as the occasional 10% coupon and the ease of returning defective items to a real store). The extended warranty price is proportional to the laptop's cost. My niece got a 2 year warranty for her $400 laptop for less than $40.

how long does it take for the laptop to arrive at my house? lets say i order it oct 1st. when will it arrive?
There are estimated delivery times on the site which vary depending on how much you want to fork over for shipping. I doubt it would take longer than a week for the cheapest option. Just look the site over, it's free to browse.

I don't honestly know, except that the Core-based laptops are being somewhat discounted to make room for Core 2 generation laptops. I think Core 2 supports 64-bit instructions. Personally, I think as a regular user, you'll be fine with a regular Core Duo. It's a huge advancement over intel's previous mobile CPUs.

The only thing I have to add to that is don't pay a premium to get a Sony Vaio.

Which is why I didn't mention Sony.

They still suck, and they will always suck. Sony is the only Japanese-brand laptop I tell people to avoid, but people that are usually interested in Sony-brand laptops are ONLY interested in Sony-brand laptops.

thanks espy605! yeah i wanted a dell but my dad said no but .. ill probably get it... i looked for the 20% discount from FM( i am also a member) can u pm me a link please?

i can wait for a laptop what the heck are the meroms or w/e thats coming out?

The only thing I can see wrong with a Dell is returning defective items can be a pain. Otherwise, there is a decent deal on a Toshiba laptop starting October 4th at Best Buy/CC. I forget the specifics, but it's a reasonable deal. Worthless intel integrated graphics, though.

Just go to the Dell Home Systems store page, there is a box of coupons available on the left (expires tomorrow):

http://www.fatwallet.com/store.php?store=208

The e1505 is the base model I recommend in terms of cost versus performance and it's okay weight at 6 lbs. The coupon should work with it as long as you bump it over $1,000. It expires after 4,000 uses as well but Dell constantly has coupons coming out so if you can't get in on it now there'll be another one.

go here

www.dealnews.com

you can find some great deals here on potential laptops.

Im using a Dell XPS M140. Its a great fucking laptop. Its light, durable, fast, and its light. i tink it oinly weighs around 4-6 pounds. Dell makes a great mass market computers. Ive only bought dells for the last 6 years and never had a problem with them...i even had an old 233mhz inspiron desktop..that thing still works to this day.

the best i can tell you is that if your looking for sony...see if they still have the $250 instant rebate on laptops. My uncle just bought one for my aunt for 850. The Vaio he bought her was pretty beefy all around. if you cant score that..check dealsnews...then if that doesnt work...dell always has weekly specials lying around. why does your dad hate Dell so much? past problems with one he owned? i fully agree with espy...take it to your dad and force him to buy a dell...you cant go wrong with it.

Yeah, it is a great laptop (in fact I would love one), but isn't it also Dell's top of the line series? I think the base model is well above his $800 budget.

Toshiba laptops are alright, I got mine as a "free" gift from one of those sites that require you to complete offers and get a referral to do the same. So far it's been pretty good.

ahh ok didnt see that he had a $800 budget. yeah it is dells top of the line. than agreed, the e1505 would fit in that line. they are still great for multimedia and now he gets a a dual core for all about equal or under 800. i still cant see why the op's dad hates Dell so much.

I just got my brother this laptop from Buy.com:

http://www.buy.com/prod/HP_Compaq_n...3400_1_8GHz_256KB_L2/q/loc/101/203020005.html

It is a Sempron, but its a 64 bit cpu, and still fast enough for most needs. Its $499 after $100 rebate. Its from HP's business division so it supposedly "built" better: the hard drive is shock mounted, the keyboard is spill resistant, it has a built in finger print reader, also the battery supposedly lasts up to 4 hours (which is good for an AMD).

It seemed like a pretty good deal, he should be getting it on Friday so I'll tell you how it is hands on.

Also I heard that they will soon (in October) start offering VISTA coupons with laptops so you can upgrade to Vista for free/reduced price. So you might want to wait a little while to see what crops up.

CHECK OUT THE DELL OUTLET SITE, YOU CAN GET A 9400/E1705 (17" SCREEN) FOR LESS THAN $800 BUCKS. THEY USUALLY COME PRETTY LOADED. IT'S BEST TO CHECK EARLY IN THE MORNING BEFORE THE E-BAY "BUSINESS'" GOBBLE THEM UP TO RESALE. THATS WHAT I'M GONNA DO SOON, I FOUND ONE THAT WAS $650 BUT I DIDN'T HAVE THE CHEESE TO BUY IT RIGHT NOW. THEY HAVE REFURBS, SCRATCH/DENT, AND PREVIOUS ORDERED AND RETURNED WITH NOTHING WRONG WITH THEM. EITHER WAY, THEY CARRY THE SAME WARRANTY AS A NEW ONE. PLUS YOU CAN ORDER IT ON SUNDAY AND PROBABLY HAVE IT BY WED OR THUR BECAUSE THEY ARE BOXED AND READY TO GO ALREADY.:bouncy:
and i dont want a MAC and dont want a dell
Then you want shit? Ok, how about you go on eBay and buy one of those "Internet Ready" Toshiba laptops from 1992? The screens are a bitchin 256 colors.
