What causes a PC to start up by itself?

I have been noticing a lot lately that I would come home from work and the PC is up and running when I know it was off when I left for work in the morning. I checked the bios to see if Wake on Lan or Wake on Ring were enabled (since Wake on Ring would cause my old PC to boot when the external modem picked up a ring, but that was back in 1999) but I know they are not enabled. No one I know uses my PC and I have no settings in windows to cause the wake up like that. This is starting to worry me a bit. Does anyone know what could be happening?

That happened to me once about a month ago. It was in the middle of the night, the startup music woke me up.

It's probably just the machines putting their evil plan into motion, that's all.

ooo skynet at work.

Are you sure the PC is actually shut down? Sometimes the PC doesn't shut down because some annoying program doesn't want to be shut down.

If it's that concerning, try taking out your ethernet / USB if you've got cable or DSL or unplug your phone jack so you can't go onto the Internet. You could even plug out the power plug if you feel better.

There may be another BIOS setting you may want to look at. There is one that if you lose power, the default settings is to turn back on when power is resumed. Perhaps you are having some brownouts in your area

Your BIOS may have a standby function (modem standby). Disable it. Power surges may also kick in your BIOS. Also check your software that auto-updates (i tunes, real, etc.). May want to disable the autoupdate feature on each one at a time to see if one of them is responsible.

I agree... that Baphomet is always pulling pranks. What a lovable scamp.

... I mean... Yea, black out was my first thought.

My computer used to do that a lot when I had a finicky PSU and it would restart everytime we had a brown out. Very creepy but I think it was something to do with the power surging.
