I'm thinking of getting an Action Replay (the new "EVO" version), but I know there have been some compatiability issues. For those of you who have used the system, is it worth it? (here's the site for it: www.codejunkies.com)

I really dig the idea that i'll be able to play non-US DVDs with it, as well as use the little memory USB thingy to transfer saves and codes. Anyone have any comments about how well this system works? Also, how does it stack up next to the newest GameShark offering?

Thanks!

Yeah i have been looking into one of these as well, especially the fact it lets you play roms on the ps2 has a great advantage, but of couse like you im hesitent...

Yeah it all sounds good especially with the ability to play ROMs, but like you guys I just dunno. The deal with the MP3 Player/Flash drive seems decent too, but is the MP3 player $100 quality?

aw hell. i'm heading to Best Buy in a bit to get the Megaman collection; if they have the Action Replay, I might just have to bite the bullet...

If so, i'll report back on how it works...

It's at BB? Just goes to show how much my store sucks, they have jack for accessories. Another thing from Datel I haven't seen anyplace is the MAX Drive for Xbox...I've seen the PS2 version a few places but the Xbox version has been strangely absent everywhere

Actually, my BB usually does carry Action Replay, GameShark, and a shit-ton of other accessories.

But, I just saw on the Action Replay site that they are now shipping the ne package; so i'm not sure if the stores will have it yet...

Oh well, i gotta head to BB anyway....

OK, I bought one, and here's my verdict:

THIS THING SUCKS A DONKEY'S ASSHOLE!!!

Well, I might be jumping the gun a bit, but that's how i feel so far. My main reason for wanting this thing is to unlock special features in games with their "powersaves" application. I don't use cheat codes to finish games, but sometimes i don't feel like completing 100% of a game just to be able to select a different outfit for my character (or something like that).
Anyway, I really don't like the 1 player game in SOCOM II, but I love to play online. Well, there are some characters that are off limits to me in the online mode due to the fact that I haven't unlocked them in 1 player mode. So, I was hoping to use a Powersave to unlock these for me. Well, after having the damn thing freeze up on me about a dozen times while trying to download a SOCOM II powersave, I decided to try a different game. I picked NBA Street's Powersave, and it worked just fine!

Long and short of the matter is that about 4 out of 10 Powersave downloads worked; the others froze up or gave me an error message.

I'm gonna try again tomorrow, and see if perhaps they were just having trouble with their server or something... if it still works so unreliably I plan to return it to the store.

I'll keep you posted, but my warning for now is: be prepared to wrestle with it if you want results!!!

OK, here's my update:

Maybe I was a bit hard on AR in my last post. As of now:
PROs:
-decently user-friendly interface; options are clearly labeled, etc
-wide selection of automatic downloadable codes/saves
-the saves actually work
-supposedly you can emulate Genesis games with the PC software that came with the AR, burn a disc, and then play it on the PS2. (haven't tried it yet)
-plays DVDs from other regions (i have only 1 non-US DVD to try with, and it does work!)

CONs:
-freezes semi-frequently, and never gives any indication as to why
-it is impossible to tell the size of a powersave before you download it; therefore, you might wait for a large download only to find out that it is too big for your memory card!
-here's my biggest gripe: For example, I have a GTA VC save on my memory card. but, the AR interface doesn't allow me to save a DIFFERENT file for that game on the same card. This is also the case with SOCOM II, Soul Calibur, and GTA 3. However, this IS NOT the case with NBA Street, RE:CVX, and BG&E.

Hmmm....
So, my decision for now is to keep the AR and buy another mem card just for powersaves. I've been needing a new card anyway, so now i'll just have to move some files around so that no two saves for the same game are on a card at a time.

more as it develops.....
So is it worth buying, or should i just wait?
Just buy the damn thing already! It's basically a GS but with a few more features that are a little unreliable to use.

If you dig sports games i hear they can be a good way to get Roster updates if you don't have ability to take the console online. Never actually tried such things though.
