What do you think about pre-order bonuses/special content in North America?

Has anyone else noticed the number of games that include nice pre-order bonuses or extra content via special editions lately? I remember not too many years ago, most people would always be talking about how Japan gets great extras and we get nothing. Now it is becoming commonplace for high-profile release to get artbooks, busts, making-of-DVDs, soundtracks, cell art, even controllers as bonuses. Do you think the fact that many gamers who shop with more savvy (thanks to sites like CAG) have helped this cause? After joining this site probably didn't buy a title at full price for at least a year. I see so many cool pre-order items now though, and sice the extras are being offered, I don't mind dropping the extra cash. A good example of this is the Halo 2: CE and RE 4: SE Collector's Tins. I think companies realize that including extras in a great incentive for people to buy new and at full price.

Well, not only that, but competition has increased the amount of extras in bundles. If Microsoft didn't send out a Halo 2 CE, there might not have been any need to put out a RE4 CE. That might have happened anyway, but you understand what I mean.

Second'd!

I especially like it when companies offer you a free GAME or special demo/collection (Like the Zelda preorder w/OOT and Master Quest).

I especially hope Nintendo starts doing it more......WHY didn't Starfox Assault come with ports of Starfox/Starfox 64?!? *cry*

Or better yet, the canned starfox 2?

There is always a good number of pre-order bonus, from FFVII T-shirt to Parasite Eve II keychain to Chrono Cross clock/CD. A lot of games have some kind of bonus, but most you dont really heard about. And Halo 2 would sold well even without the CE.

I think that would be a cool bonus.

I know there are A LOT of people who wanted to play Resident Evil 1.5. Even if the game is only 60% complete it still would be interesting to see how far the game got.

That's the reason why I picked up of Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Midway has been good about giving away free games as extras.

Some of the special editions are worth buying mainly for the special packaging, but the actual extras are kind of lame. Who wants a behind the scenes documentary? Not me.

I dunno, I kinda like watching those. It's interesting to see the people behind the game. I enjoyed the Halo 2 one.

Meh they're getting better but are still aren't hardly much of anything compared to overseas. I still don't like the fact that they sometimes charge us $5-10 extra for some stuff that should probably just be included with the game.

I very rarely buy a game on its launch day, I usually wait for a price drop unless if i have been really looking forward to it (Like the new Zelda coming out), even before i came on this site I did it because money is a little tight. But when you throw in something a like the free zelda bonus disc how could i refuse.

That's the way I feel too. The last game I bought on launch day was Halo 2: CE and Street Fighter Anniversary Edition (Xbox). I actually wasn't looking to buy SF last week, it just so happened I went to a Gamestop when it went on sale. I didn't even know what day the game came out.
They have been doing good extras. Especially the HALO 2 CE. That case is just too cool. It looks really pretty on my shelf.
Shiny is good! :D

I'm usually not too impressed by most pre-order bonus materials (a t-shirt, tin, art cell, plastic statue, etc.). Most of it appears to be junk that I'll never have any use for anyway. :(

I do like the pre-order bonuses. Something along the lines of Zelda OoT where pre-orders got the bonus packaging, but without the extra cost. Nice way to ensure pre-orders.

I like the shiny packages.
