What do you think of the Graphic Novel "Watchmen"?

Hey everyone, I recently read the graphic novel "Watchmen" and I loved it. It instantly became my favorite graphic novel of all time, and one of my favorite pieces of fiction ever.

So because of this, I instantly recommended it to most of my friends and family. Well one person that I know hated it, they couldn't stand, didn't even finish the book and now criticizes me whenever I express my love for it. So they posed this challenge, they wanted me to post this here, and see what other people thought of the book. I though the response would be overwhelmingly positive, and they thought otherwise.

So please, just vote in the poll what you really think of it and also if you want to, please post something here, about why you love or hate the book.
 
Haven't read it, don't think i'd like it. I like my battles between good and evil and little more black/white i guess. The characters in watchmen would probably be considered villains in most other books.

Did you read the Wiki article on it or something? Shame on you if you did.
 
I loved it, and, despite the neat stills we've seen, still have no idea how they're properly going to transfer it to film and keep every bit of the story in tact (like they said they would).
 
Somehow I've got three copies...My brother gave me the TPB for Christmas, I bought a well-worn version from Ebay years ago for four bucks, and I have the original 12 issue miniseries as well. Yes, I like it. I love alternate present-day tales, antiheros, things like that.
 
Great stuff.

Movie is going to suck. I can feel it. I'm predicting a happy ending with pinatas and showers of candy falling down as the Watchmen crew has a picnic with the Xmen, Fantastic Four, and Superman.

It's a comic book, but it's so much more.

I don't know, Gibbons said they did a damn good job transferring the gritty style to the screen, so at least there's that. I don't really think Snyder would make it happy, if anything he'd probably make it darker.

More like a Novel Length comic book, very, very, very good. I highly suggest it.
 
There's just too much material that's going to be omitted, or glossed over, or won't be explained, etc. I don't think for one second that it'll reach the psychological levels the book does, but it's going to be hard enough just cramming enough up on the screen to convince me that they are being pretty loyal.

I mean unless the reviews/previews are HORRID, I'll definitely be seeing it. I'm just...really disillusioned by it living up to the high standard it's up against.

Step 1 to alleviating worry: Showing Rorshach's costume with the moving blobs. That alone would make me feel better.

I agree with everything said above. I really hope they throw the regular movie length consideration to the wind. I don't care if it takes them 6 hours to present this, I want it all, and not a gimped version.

Some of the things I've heard the director say make me think he's going to really work to make this as true to the book as possible.

Well, supposedly (I apologize for my lack of citation) Rorschach's mask is going to be CGI, and will change throughout the movie.

I'm also impressed that they are going to produce an animated version of the pirate story for inclusion on the DVD and it will be referenced in the movie. You have to imagine that this would have been the easiest thing to just chuck aside unless one was really trying to produce something worthwhile.

I'm still skeptical, for the reasons you cited, but there are glimmers of hope.

Wow. That's quite uplifting to hear, actually. They could have ignored it or half-assed it with a download from the DVD or something, but to go the extra mile is nice to hear.

I guess we'll all know once it finally hits.
 
Wow, that is awesome that they are gonna make a Cartoon version of the pirate story. At first I didn't like it, but as I went on, I loved it. That definately adds alot to the movie.

Length is no issue to me. Unless it ends up being a gross monstrosity, I will watch it twice, and purchase the DVD. Also, I don't believe in the supposed shortened, modern attention span. If people have enough interest, they will watch.
 
The Watchmen was an awesome book, but it might suffer the same fate as Jurassic Park.

I haven't read V for Vendetta because I'd probably start hating the movie afterwards.

Then again, Batman Begins was a decent swipe at Batman: Year One.
