I hope this is the right board

I need to get a new DS for my son (DH spilled coffee all over his this weeknd) and am not sure what one to get. The one he had was the old phat version DS in silver. My son would prefer an older model like he had but I told him we would be better off getting a DS Lite, but I have heard mixed things about the new crimson/black unit and that was the one he picked out if we cannot find an old phat version.
He is 7 1/2 and plays his DS at least once a day and is fairly careful with his things.

Also who offers the best warranty as far as a B&M store (BB, CC, or ??) I would prefer one with a replacement plan

Thanks!!

Julie

all the optional replacement plans i've used are "no questions asked". that would be gamestop and best buy. they may vary by length though, gamestop's is one year, and i think you can get like 2-3 year at best buy.

they're worth looking into because worst case you can just switch to a brand new ds lite when the warranty is about the expire. i bought a used DS lite that came with the 1-yr warranty from GS and just traded it for a brand new black one when they came out a couple months later.

one other thing to consider is whether he brings his DS lite to school. my friend's daughter's DS lite got stolen when she upgraded.

I guess a Crimson DS would likely be more "targeted" at theft than any other colour, especially with young kids. Might want to keep that in mind, though it sort of sounds stupid to me just saying it.

I wouldn't worry too much about the stuff you hear about the Crimson. Although I've had a defective one the first time I bought it, (crippled d-pad, though that problem is not limited to the Crimson) I just exchanged it for another. None of the two I've played had the yellow-tint or ghosting problems people have mentioned.

I agree with you that the lite is so much better.

But he's probably seen one of the new ones at a friend's place or as a demo unit at a store right?

I vote for a working one :D Oh, and I have a black lite and it's great besides the fingerprints...I gave my old phat ds to my dad

Thanks everyone! He has been debating all night...lol. His brother has the red phat DS that came with mario cart and his cousin has a lite so he tried them both again today and after much debate decided on the crimson and black one....I tried to talk him in to the black one because I wanted the crimson one for myself, but he wants this one because it is special like his brothers red mario phat DS...lol

And as far as them taking them to school, I have been lucky so far. I told them if they took it to school and someone took it they would have to replace it on their dime and apparently they are both too cheap (like me) to take that chance

He has a doctor's appointment in the morning so after that we are going to go to Best Buy and grab one and a replacement plan........just in case. I noticed that CC had a free starter set, so hopefully I can get BB to match it...

Thanks again!

Julie

I went to BB and they told me they don't offer a replacement plan, so I went to CC and with the replacement plan there it was $60 for 2 years. So we ended up at EB Games and I got him the crimson/black ds and a replacement plan for a year for an extra $20 .
I like the fact that if something happens to it within the year I can take it to them and they will give me a new one, much better than having to mail it and wait! Plus my son is thrilled so thats all that matters!

Thanks again for all the help!!

Julie

Glad you got him hooked back up with his games! Didn't catch this thread yesterday, but I have to say I'm impressed that your 7 year old takes such good care of electronics. Since it's the silver phat (what I have), he's had to have had it for what, 2-plus years?

I almost wish mine would break somehow so I'd be forced to upgrade, can't make the decision on my own.
