What games have been your impetus to buy a console / hand-held device?

Hm... I usually don't have one, honestly. I just buy the systems because I know there'll eventually be something I want to play. Though in the case of the Dreamcast, Soul Calibur forced me to buy one.
 
Great question. I can't really say I bought a system for a specific game though. Most of the time the console hits the price point to where it warrants a purchase. There is always something to play on the system.
 
I don't usually, but it has turned out that way on some occasions.

I'm a huge wrestling fanatic, so I bought the PS2 because of the Smackdown series of wrestling games.

I bought an xbox because of Fable and sports games.

The first time I bought a psp, it was grand theft auto (which was a terrible, terrible decision). The second time I bought a psp, was for the yet to be announced and only rumored Kingdom Hearts game and for the at the time announced Silent Hill Origins, and Monster Hunter Freedom as well.

I bought a DS mainly because of Pokemon.

Pretty much all my Nintendo platforms were bought because of a Mario platformer or Kart game.

GBA was Sword of Mana/FFTA

I bought my all my Sega consoles for Sonic (although the Saturn was mostly NiGHTs)

I bought Xbox for Sega games (like Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, etc.)

I bought a 360 for PGR games, although I was definitely wanting Eternal Sonata one day.

I bought PS1 for Ridge Racer, although I mostly bought it because it seemed interesting.

I bought PS2 because of FFX and Jak & Daxter.

I bought PS3 because of Ratchet & Clank and FFXIII coming one day.

I bought a PSP because I wanted Daxter badly and was waiting for Crisis Core one day.

My biggest system sellers are:
-Main FF game
-Xenosaga/Xenogears
-Ratchet & Clank
-Good Mario
-Good Sonic
 
Halo for the Xbox and Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii. With PS3 I really liked Resistance but I got the system mostly for Blu-Ray playback. The Xbox 360 I simply bought at launch. DS and PSP Slim I got for no games in particular.
 
I don't buy consoles for a particular game, but I did hunt down a DC and Saturn so I could play shmups and 2D fighters.
 
I bought my SNES for Final Fantasy II (Japanese FF IV) after I watched my friend play it. I was so blown away by the story, the graphics, and woah, the music!
 
About the only console I bought for some specific games was my PS2, bought way back in May of 2007. Brought it home with Rogue Galaxy, Tales of the Abyss, and Disgaea 2. And later DDS1/2. I've played one of that list. :whistle2:(

All my other systems were purchased either for the library as a whole or the assumption that the library as a whole will be worth it.

Dreamcast- Soul Calibur (though NFL2K, Sonic and Powerstone at launch were also draws)
N64- Mario 64 (was nothing else at launch)
PSone- FFVII (was other stuff I wanted, but that got me to take the plunge)
Xbox- KOTOR

That's pretty much it as far as really taking the plunge on a console for just one game that made me decide it was worth it. Other's I've owned were for several games. Though of course I enjoyed more games than the one's listed above for those consoles--those were just the games that made me finally pick them up.
 
I've never bought a system just for a game, but one of my friends bought a GC specifically for Phantasy Star Online (and aside from SC2, that's all he ever bought, and he had other systems he could have got SC on). Now he's debating a Wii specifically for Brawl.
 
Usually for me it's a combination of games. For example it was GTA3, PS1 backwards compatibility, and FFX that lead me to get a PS2. Super Smash Bros. and Zelda collector's edition were the driving forces behind me getting a GC. Gears of War, Viva Pinata, Dead Rising and the ability to play multi platform next gen games that got me to buy a 360. For the PS3 it was pretty much the fact that it was a cheap Blu-Ray player as well as for the new FF game coming out and I was owed a pretty big gift, so I got it for free. For the GBA I think it was mainly Super Mario World, as well as the ports of the other great NES/SNES games. DS was kind of a similar to the PS3 there really wasn't much I wanted to play at the time I bought it, but I got a deal that was too good to pass up on one so I grabbed it.
 
PSP - Portable Ops. Loved every minute of it. fuck the haters.
PS3 - Uncharted but I really can't afford to keep the machine so I'm going to have to hawk it. Bummer. I'll just keep on clearances and buy another when the inevitable 'slim' is released. I really hate to let it go. I fucking love my PS3.
PS2 - We Love Katamari + SotC
XBox - First time Fable + Halo 2, second time to use it as a media center
Gamecube - Wind Waker
Wii - Twilight Princess which, incidentally, I quite preferred on the Gamecube. The Wii port brought nothing to the table.
DS - 2nd year lineup but especially Animal Crossing
PSX - FF7 (I was young and foolish)
 
GTA III is the only game that was the primary factor in me buying a console. Even with that I still wouldn't have bought a PS2 if it didn't include a DVD player.
 
now that I think about it, I also just bought a super nintendo for TMNT IV, Megaman X, Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and Super Double Dragon.
 
I've owned all the major systems at one time or another from the NES to the current generation, but only for a particular game in the following cases:

I asked for a Sega CD to play Night Trap (don't laugh!)

I bought a Sega Saturn for Daytona USA & Panzer Dragoon

I bought a Nintendo 64 for Super Mario 64

I bought a PlayStation for Resident Evil

I bought a Wii for Twilight Princess
 
I'll only buy a system if there are good games already available for it. I don't buy based on some promise that a game will come out in the future.

DS: Advance War DS, Trauma Center, Fire Emblem, Ouenden
PS2: Final Fantasy X (which I hated BTW), Breath of Fire 5, Kingdom Hearts
Dreamcast: Ikaruga
 
Electroplankton sold me on the concept of the DS. Imported that after I got a used system from a CAG. :)

I don't think I've bought any other system on the basis of just one game. I usually don't get a system until there's a decent backlog of stuff to play (like the 360--though that well has run dry for me at this point) or I know the great stuff will be coming (like the Wii).
 
I bought a GBA for Castlevania : Circle of the Moon and then the subsequent sequels and the Nintendo DS for Castlevania DoS and PoR.
Other then that I suppose the 2001 holiday for the ps2 with Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Final Fantasy X all coming out, made me beg the crap out of my parents for a ps2 for Christmas that year.
But Nowadays with a job I usually end up purchasing every system around launch and just wait for the games instead of the older days, of waiting for the good stuff and then begging my parents for the system and games.

Super Mario 64 for the N64.

No real game for the PS1, it was just a factor of the sheer number of decent to great games on it that you couldn't play on the N64.

Sort of GTA III/Vice City double pack and Halo for the Xbox, although really I think it was just a combination of the number of games at a decent price and not having to fool with memory cards. But if the GTA double pack hadn't been out on Xbox I'm fairly certain I would have gone PS2 as my initial system. I really wanted to check that one out.

PS1 - I decided I would get a PS1 when I read a preview for Street Fighter Alpha 3 in a magazine.

Dreamcast - I was sorta depressed after a chick dumped me, so I bought a DC on ebay. The system was pretty much dead by that point so there was already a bunch of games I wanted, like Rival Schools, Jet Grind Radio, and Cannon Spike.

PS2 - The system was a gift but I was more than happy to start playing new Smackdown games on it.

GameCube - The Zelda bonus disc got me to finally pull the trigger.

Xbox - Kind of a weird choice but I got this for Mortal Kombat 6. It just bugged me that the PS2 version would be slightly inferior, and I wanted the best version.

360 - I got my 360 for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Yes, for a 13-year-old game. It's one of my all time favorite games though, and I play it all the time so it was absolutely worth it.

Any other system was either given as a gift (you know, back when consoles were cheaper) or purchased for other reasons (I choose you, VirtualBoy!).

I think it's pretty standard practice that you buy consoles for their killer apps. That's pretty much always been the golden rule for myself and everyone I know at least. Otherwise you get screwed. I mean look at all these poor ps3 fanboys right now...

(just kidding guys, MGS4 will be released eventually)

Oh I love the PSP library, and PS3 (Now)... but I got all these systems on day 1... when they first came out nothing really appealed to me.

But that was then... ^_^

I bought my n64 for Robotech: Crystal Dreams. I was really disappointed when gametek canceled it.

Bought my playstation 1 for Parasite Eve and Metal Gear Solid.

Playstation 2 for Zone of the Enders and Metal Gear Solid 2.

I just bought my gamecube because because of the price drop and Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes.

I bought a PSP just for GTA Liberty City Stories. Once i heard the news it was being ported to PS2 i sold it on ebay. LOL. Generally i dont buy a system for 1 or 2 games alone. Though i may have to pick up a PS2 again if GOW:COO is ported to PS2. There are still a few games id like to play for ps2. (Shadow of the colossus, Godhand, Fire Pro Returns, Warriors)

This generation, I am fine with just a 360. Although, I have a Wii, I barely play it. Even Super Smash Bros Brawl didnt interest me as much as I wanted it to. The PS3 is junk, I refuse to pay for an expensive paperweight. Thus, I am left with the 360, undoubtedly the greatest system of this generation. My only big problem is with the hardware, Microsoft should have spent a few extra months before releasing 360, just to avoid what would become the red rings of death.

I just got a PSP two weeks ago for GoW and Patapon. I havent gotten to Patapon yet but GoW is great.
