What is one of your favorite Game Endings of all Time?

coltyhuxx

CAGiversary!
It could be as old as Space Quest ][ or as new as Gears of War....;)
This threads only criterion is what YOU liked!

It doesn't have to be your favorite of all time. Just one that you liked a lot. Try and throw out some of the less obvious ones (edit: ok, everyone seems to love Metal Gear(s)) if you have something that comes to mind.

And be sure to let the CAG's know why you liked it (A twist? Raw excitement? Dark? Lengthy?)

State the name of the game and then throw down some spoiler tags. That way you can avoid spoilers that you don't want to know about. Sometimes its fun to play a game when you know that people have raved about it's ending. Let's discuss.

I'm going to throw down:

Conkers Bad Fur Day

because:

My friend beat this last night as I sat on the couch watching. I've played most of it so I'm familiar with the game but I'd never seen anyone beat it. The final boss was pretty awesome (anything that spoofs Aliens is awesome in my book) and the "airlock warning" voice was as humorous as anything else in the game. What I really enjoyed about the ending was that, unlike the rest of the game it ended on a VERY dark note. As the sad final credit music played my friend and I who had been spoiled by laughing most of the game were like, "Whoa... this is dark." I liked the contrast. It will stick in my memory as one of the better game endings I've seen.

with an honorable mention to Skies of Arcadia.

I could throw down fifty of these, so I'll stop myself right here.

I'd say the whole last sequence of Metal Gear Solid starting with the fight with Metal Gear Rex. So fucking awesome/epic.

I'd have to agree with Conker's Bad Fur Day. Another favorite is Jak 3:
You find out Daxter is a precursor, and he finally gets pants. Tess is then turned into a Precursor/Ottsel when she says she wants pants just like his.

MGS:2 I playing as naked Raiden at 3 in the morning. The codec pops up and tells me to go to bed I've been playing to long. That got a good hard laugh from me.

Well, I will agree to agree! Jak 3 had a GREAT ending. Really interesting, dramatic and funny (of course). It does disturb me that Daxter is the voice of Vinnie from Doogie Howser M.D.!!

A little older but:

OUT OF THIS WORLD

because:

During the final boss battle you get your legs/back (?) broken and lose most of your motility (you can barely crawl). It's quite a switch from the typical final moments of a game when you have the uber-powerful weapon. When you vanquish the boss your mysterious alien friend whom you've built a non-verbal relationship with throughout the game, comes and saves you, if I recall correctly on the back of a huge flying beast. Really cool.

I can't remember enough to say it is my single favorite but I loved the ending to Might and Magic: Darkside of Xeen. The twist where you learn what Alamar and Corak truly were (which may have happened earlier than the ending, I forget), the UPS delivery OF DOOM!, nice epic fight with a little twist at the end.
The opening is one of my all time favorites too.

I definitly loved the ending to Fatal Frame 2 (The normal one.)
When Mio kills Mayu to perform the Crimson Ceremony, then after runs through the forest following Mayu's butterfly.
One of the more emotional endings I've seen.

Agreed

I'm surprised no one mentioned Shadow of the Colossus. Very emotional.

Damn... I honestly am very easy to please... I enjoyed:

- Tekken 2: Kazuya's ending
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Resident Evil 2
- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
- Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
- Final Fantasy IX
- Final Fantasy XII
- Final Fantasy VI
- Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross and their endings
- Super Mario Bros. 3
- Super Mario World
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Onimusha 3: Demon Siege
- Devil May Cry
- Super Mario 64
- And a whole bunch of others.

Earthbound.

Nothing has come even CLOSE to matching up. It's ridiculous how perfect the ending is. Walking around and being able to see and talk everyone you met throughout the game? And this is after a truly epic sequence of ever-spiraling madness toward the final battle.

And then...it's just over. So beautifully poignant to the absolute last drop.

Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6 are honorable mentions. CT because of the amount of endings, and all of them being worthwhile in their own special way. FF6 because I've never seen a game where you get to see a massive number of characters retreat from their last epic battle, having to climb down a trashed fortress so they can finally rest their weary bones.

Ok Im going to go with old school here.

x-men for sega genisis.

you had to actually reset your sega to get the ending!

I was like no way im not reseting this damn machine after playing for 9 stight hours to see the ending! Show ME THE ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh

you really do have to reset the damn machine to see the ending. That was cool!

Klonoa 1 + 2 (PS1, PS2 had very good endings):

I never got to finish Klonoa 1, since I was still just a wee little gamer when I got it, got stuck on the second to last boss, and couldn't find the game later. A few months ago, I actually heard about the ending on a different message board, and was shocked. It was like rereading a children's book, and reilizing all of the innuendos For those who don't know, the heroes save the world, and then Huepow (the sidekick) just nonchalantly says "Oh yeah, btw, you don't exist, ur a figment of my imagination" then a vortex comes out of the sky and sucks him up.

Very bizare. I think I would have been in tears if I saw that when I was a kid...

I actually finished the second game before I learned about this ending, and the timing that I finished the game was perfect. It was about 3 days after 9/11, my friend's father was an officer and died going into the tower, and, since every TV channel was doing 24 hour coverage, I decided to pick up the game to escape from it all. The ending was really sappy and emotional (something about not forgetting about Sorrow) but given the timing, it really helped me out of a difficult moment.

Zone of Enders - Ending had me cracking up

The big final battle has come, Anubis has descended down upon you, now is the time to show how much you've grown as a pilot............. or maybe not. Jehuty straight up says you can't win, main character runs like a bitch, had me rolling. It was surprisingly refreshing

That would suck if you were playing it on a Nomad then (no reset button, just on/off switch).

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

*sigh* *puts on flame/fanboy retardant suit on*

Final Fantasy VII

It was gonna get mentioned sooner or later. One of the most influencial games that had an impact on me.

Halo, just something about the ending made me just awestruck...... now for that shit Halo 2 pulled, that can go straight to hell.

I think that the Silent Hill games have the best endings, especially the more odd endings. Out of all of them though I will go with the dog ending to Silent Hill 2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHU2eqCEJ4o&mode=related&search=
I think my favorite part is the song.

Sigh these are good too though.... so hard to pick.
UFO 1 the weakest of them all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PPkh9whVJY&mode=related&search=
UFO 2 Pretty good.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-uDnZpimgI
UFO 3 The best UFO ending, such an awesome song :)

Well, if you can't guess from my name and my sig, Snatcher. If you've never played it, it could take about 9 hours. Over time it can get down to like 2 1/2-3 hours. But the best thing is is that, even after all that long (or short) of playing, the feaking ending runs somewhere between 20-30 mins. Now THAT is an ending...

I loved Super Mario Bros. 3's nod to the first game, and I hated that they changed it for the GBA rerelease. :p

Shadow of the Colossus was pretty darn neat.

And Chrono Trigger and it's undending ending variety (ha!) was awesome as well.

Most recently, seeing the credits roll on Ouendan and Elite Beat Agents on the hardest difficulty level is very, very sweet. :)
MGS3 is my favorite ending of all time
I can't believe it. Something we actually agree on. :D

Shadow of the Colosus
ICO
Metal Gear Solid 3

Those are about the only ones I actually felt are worth remembering.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Yeah, I said it.

Wind Waker.

Not because of the ending itself. That ending was quite generic. However, I was on such a high after the final boss battle that I didn't care. After all of that dicking around with giant enemies with glaringly obvious weaknesses, the final fight was beautiful in its simplicity. Just you, Zelda, and the King of the Gerudo on a small platform with the entire ocean crashing down around you. None of that running around giant beasts with slow-moving attacks waiting for an opening. Just a simple, beautiful battle between two swordsmen.

And some girl who is apparently a good shot with the bow.
That was good too, I had played the shit out of that game for like a week straight then when I saw
Link stab Ganon in the face, my jaw dropped. It caught by suprised.
I felt very satisfied after that.

This maybe somewhat unpopular...

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver

Took such an interesting tale to an excellent climax and still left you wanting more with the cliffhanger.

Ill go the PC way and say all the Lucas Arts adventure games (Monkey Island , Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, etc..). All are pretty fun to play.
SMB2. WTF? It was all a dream?!
I was just about to mention this one. It was a great surprise for the time.

HELL yes... snatcher has a GREAT ending. generous in length and just freaking cool. doesn't pander.

Silent Hill 2. You can take one of 3 endings and leave it at that. What you want to believe the outcome is, it's up to you. To this day, I refuse to believe that
James committed suicide.
It's the only game where just thinking about the endings gets me teary eyed. Like right now typing this. ;)

There's also Silent Hill 4's best/good ending.
To see Henry walking in daylight, completely in real life, and being safe, was actually very beatiful. First glimpse in any SH to see the main character finally safe and ok in the ending.

There's MANY other great endings, but Metal Gear Solid 3's ending was just amazing, and needs to be on any top ten list, no matter what.

OK, first, here is a web site with the endings to many NES games.

http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/nes/#d

and my favorite ending (although I can't find any record of it) was at the end of Dragon Warrior for NES. The dragon asks you if you want to share power, and I said yes, and then he turns on you. I was like "WTF, I thought we had a deal"

By the way, I loved that game because (1) it was a great game and (2) I got it free back in the day with my subscription to Nintendo Power.

Final Fantasy 10

I really liked that it ended with Tidus and Auron just disapearing and yet they seem happy knowing that even though they are destined to die the world is save. This of course was ruined in the International ending and FFX-2
