What is the cheapest way to buy Windows Vista 64 bit (Home Premium or Ultimate)

Well you can use windows 7 for free legally till august. You should wait for windows 7 because it uses less resources than vista...and for gaming thats a good thing

It probably won't make much of a difference. Vista just uses a lot of ram, but with a 64 bit OS and memory as cheap as it is that shouldn't be a problem.

When I wanted to buy Vista 64 Ultimate, Amazon ran out of stock :( $150, free shipping. Ended up getting it from Newegg for the same price, plus tax :(

Love it, though; I've got 16GB of RAM, so Vista can take as much as it needs :) (You should be fine with 2GB for standard stuff, maybe 4GB for gaming or work with graphics / 3D apps.)

This.

I agree...2GB is the absolute minimum (only surfing the net, Office, etc). For gaming, graphics, video, at least 4GB.

Also, Microsoft gives Windows 2008 licenses (both 32 and 64 bit) to students for free with their dreamspark.com program. Windows 2008 is better than Windows Vista.

If you are in college, see if your computer store has a deal with Microsoft. I forget what I paid for a non-OEM Vista Ultimate, but it was along the lines of $10-$20.

Although very nice too. If I had the money to spend then I would probably max out with a bunch of RAM too.

Just go download windows 7 x64, its free cause its in the beta stage and it runs all my games just the same as vista did but more efficiently.

I'm assuming he's a video-editor, probably After Effects, which does greatly benefit from insane amounts of RAM.

I have 4GB on my video-edit rig, but will prolly upgrade to at least 8GB sometime.

If you're a college student, or know someone who is, then your local college book/computer store can get you a copy of Vista for around 50-80% off, or even more.

I bought a copy of Vista Ultimate for ~$72 (full version)
