Is there any point to using the Xfinity or HBO-Go Apps on Xbox Live if you do not own a Kinect?

You don't NEED a kinect for the apps, they work just fine with a controller

HBO Go is fantastic. It lets you watch any episode of any HBO series.
I haven't found a use for Xfinity.

I use my controller.

Ya I know but what is the difference between just using my cable box?

Is that (watch any episode of any HBO series) something that you cannot do with on demand on your cable box?

It works well for people that don't want to pay for an additional cable box.

The real point of it is that it makes Microsoft money. That's the point of the majority of business decisions.

Me and my cuz split the HBO cost and we both use it. He doesn't have any cable service and only has HBO, Netfix and Hulu Plus through the xbox so he is loving HBO GO.

HBO through a Cable box has a limited selection to watch. Where as with the HBO Go app, huge selection! I'm just confused as to why this thread is up. It's like asking what the point of the Netflix app is if you don't even own Netflix.

Yes. They also have a ton more movies available to watch on HBOGO and you can watch HBO in a room without needing a cable box. I use it all the time and it is awesome.

It would be awesome if you could pay for HBO alacart without paying for cable, but you can't. I'm done paying exorbitant amounts of money for TV, so I have no use for it, but for those that have a use for it I guess it's good. I hope these companies figure it out at some point, but for now they are stuck in their old ways, with slight variation.

I thought it was a decent question and one that I always wondered myself (since I don't currently have HBO so I never got to test the app). If someone asked me whats the point of the Netflix app, I will tell them that you can watch streamed movies on your TV through Xbox instead of sitting at your PC, so its worth it to have the app.

But if you pay for HBO, I always wondered whats the point of the app when you can just go to On Demand on your cable box. You and others that commented made some good points too. I personally still don't feel like its enough for me to pay for HBO again since I can get most of the stuff I want to watch through Netflix ;)

it also let's me watch on my tablet, use my xbox in any room w/a tv, and bonus that I can watch hbo if someone else is using the box.

hey...I pay for XBL gold and HBO is bundled in my cable sub, this is just an added bonus.

If you have HBO as part of your cable plan the go app is great. They have every HBO series on demand (xfinity from Comcast is lacking to say the least)
For example right now I'm re-watching Deadwood after that I plan on watching the wire.

Huh? I have HBO but I figured I would get a better answer on here than just trying out the app. Anyways thanks for explaining the difference, saved me a lot of time and frustration. HBO definitely worth it, so far no one makes Xfinity app sound worth it.

I don't know if there is still confusion, but what people have been saying is right.

HBO on demand has a very limited selection.

HBO Go has just about every show ever shown on HBO (though not all) and over 300 movies.

I don't have Xfinity so I don't know what it contains.

In my opinion, HBO Go is terrific.

Exactly. To further clarify, HBOGO has every episode of just about every show they have ever aired. So if you heard good things about, for example, The Larry Sanders Show, you could start from episode 1 and watch the entire series. If you were to draw a Venn Diagram it would have a small circle representing HBO On Demand and a large circle completely surrounding the smaller circle representing HBOGO.

One thing to knock on the xfinity app a little, it requires you to be on xfinity internet to use. I had it a long time at my moms house, but when I moved out, I switched to directv/att internet. My mom continues to use xfinity, and I still use the e-mail and iphone app from when I used to live there. I tried logging into the app here, hoping to get the best of both worlds, but it doesn't work without a working connection to xfinity internet. From what I can tell, about the only thing useful at all about this app is getting ondemand in a bedroom without a cable box, through the xbox. Other than that, what's the point? I see why they did it this way, sorta, but this could've been big for, say, college students, who went into a dorm and can't afford a cable bill to be able to use a portion of their family's cable while away.

Haha you managed to get a Venn Diagram reference in. Nice stuff. That's weird how HBO has so little on demand, I checked other stations and they have a lot more than HBO on demand so it may not be because of Comcast. Maybe Comcast charges for On Demand or maybe HBO doesn't want people recording all their stuff.

Why is HBO doing this HBO Go service for free (in general, not just the 360 app). Are they pulling a Hulu where they will get you used to the service and then eventually make it a paid service? I don't see why they would do this in terms of their business.

You have to subscribe to HBO to have access to the app so they already have you hooked in theory. If they start charging on top of the $20/month or whatever I pay for the channel I will drop HBO entirely and just download everything I want to watch for free.

Ha. HBO is actually a pitbull on downloading. They got my brother thrown completely off his college network and sent a cease and desist to one of my friends.

Huh how did HBO get involved with him downloading, does HBO-Go have downloading as well and he downloaded everything? Not following you.

The person he quoted suggested he would begin downloading everything for free (i.e. torrents or other sites with illegally hosted materials). So he was suggesting that perhaps that is not a good idea as HBO is very proactive in protecting its IPs.

Bingo

yeah - that's what I was getting at. I pay enough per month for HBO. If they pulled some bullshit and started charging an extra monthly fee on top of that for the HBOGO app I'd drop the service entirely and seek out other ways to watch HBO shows. There are only a few current shows I watch (Game of Thrones, Veep, True Blood (ugh - I hate it so much), Curb (may never come back), Eastbound & Down and The Ricky Gervais Show) so my main reason for subscribing is for access to the back catalog stuff which is really only available through HBOGO. If they started charging extra for it I could certainly live without the entire package.

Oh, I don't understand how HBO would find out an individual downloaded one of their shows from some site.

Dunno how they found out, but he downloaded Big Love when it first came out and they sent a letter to his school and he was kicked off their network.

That's what happens when you use public torrent sites. Law firms stalk those things, watch the IP's of everyone connected to torrents, and send threatening letters to the ISPs.
