Death of the woman who shamed Moscow
Mark Franchetti, Moscow

RUSSIA’S most famous investigative reporter, Anna Politkovskaya, was gunned down in the lift of her Moscow apartment block yesterday in an apparent contract killing.
A fearless opponent of Russia’s wars in Chechnya who once described President Vladimir Putin as a “KGB snoop” and compared him to Stalin, she was shot as she returned home from a shopping trip at 4.30pm. A pistol and four bullets were found near her body.

Another blow for that shining democracy we like to call Russia. It may be old news, but it deserves a topic here becuase Russia is not a sleeping bear, they're a hiding, ferocious beast. What's good for the dicta.....I mean president, is the suppression of the free press and nationalization of industry. Oh wait, they only do that in socialist countries, right?

Guess who's funneling nuclear technology to Iran? Russia. Who sells them their rifles and tanks? Russia. Who will thwart any attempt at constraing Iran and preventing them from becoming a nuclear football holder? Russia. Who was doing the same thing in Iraq before we took over? Russia.

Who's are enemy again?

Let's send several hundred thousand troops back there. I've got a complete military strategy prepared already.

Stay the course.

If that doesn't work, plan B: We'll stand down when they stand up.

There. All Donald Rumsfeld has to do is sign the paperwork.

So, in the end, what are you bitching about? That Russia silences dissidents and has people in positions of power who would like to reinstall the soviet union back to its former glory? Oh my, you would have never been able to convince me of that yesterday.

With regards to your comments on "suppression of the free press and nationalization of industry," I'm not sure what point you were trying to make, unless you just hadn't had your coffee and were mentally stirring through the rolodex of bad things about ex-communist nations.

Moreover, suppression of the free press is not something we're immune to; while we're vastly more fortunate than the rules governing the press in other democracies (like..........Iraq, for instance, who more or less lifted Saddam's rules governing the press verbatim for implementation into the new democratic state of Iraq), we're not perfect by any means. "Gag orders" and whathaveyou aren't something we've never had happen to us, and something, in fact, that is happening to us.

As a matter of fact, those in power in the US have convinced the public to determine when the media oversteps its boundaries; for instance, that the media is harmful when it tells the public that the government is monitoring them with no reason, with no warrant, and in direct contradiction with our constitution.

That the media is responsible for the Foley scandal; their timing of the release is indicative of its sinister roots that are antagonistic to the Republican party.

Anyway...what are you bitching about again? If it ain't redundant repetition of two-decade old knowledge, then it's decaffinated banter, isn't it?

Who's are enemy again?

our. our. our.

What am I bitching about? OUR enemies that we are treating as 'friends'. Our enemies that we can look in the eye and see their soul and all that gobbly$$$$.

The fact that we aren't perfect doesn't begin to allow you to compare our foibles with those of a nation who jails it's entrepreneurs, nationalizes industries and assasinates reporters.

Scratch that. We just call our nationalization policy "subsidy", and assasinate peoples reputations with a media complicit in advancing social and political agendas. But at least we do it with the consent of the governed and it isn't carried out by fiat.

What are YOU bitching about? I'm bolstering your theory that we're fighting the wrong war. That should make you happy.

Why can't you just say that, instead of lacing your posts with irrelevant and boring blather?

The fact that we aren't perfect doesn't begin to allow you to compare our foibles with those of a nation who jails it's entrepreneurs, nationalizes industries and assasinates reporters.

I'll say something you never could: you've got a point there.

What are YOU bitching about? I'm bolstering your theory that we're fighting the wrong war. That should make you happy.

Not necessarily; that would be like drawing one's attention to Iran or North Korea, and assuming that it is implicitly stated that Iraq is not where our focus should be. Some people want to wage war on all fronts: Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea, and elsewhere. Indentifying a new "enemy" doesn't mean we abandon our old ones. You're drawing conclusions from your post that aren't there.
