I am asking this to see peoples' opinions on what's necessary on a laptop for PC gaming on a laptop. I'm going to purchase a laptop soon and I have TF2 and CoD4 in mind. My budget is also around 1,000 - 1,200

The most important thing is to try and get a laptop that has an actual video card in it... like GeForce8 Mobile or something. Onboard graphics or "Intel Integrated graphics" means that you can play solitaire.

Yeah I definitely knew that. I've gone through that shit ordeal already. I mean more like in terms of processor speed, things of that nature.

Don't be silly... a IIG means he can play 2.5-D games like Red Alert 2 or anything made in 2001 and before that :)

well basically a laptop that has the fastest memory possible, DDR 2 800 or so I believe @ this time. Also check on the hdd speed, a 7,200 RPM hdd will suit you much better.

Obviously with the dedicated video card, Dual Core CPU...just like a desktop really...btw if you are planning to game on a laptop expect your battery life to be 2 hours or so...

[quote name='SLdK']It's not going to really be on the go per-se. It'll be just for when I'm in my dorm at college.

also,

I've been looking at this, I think it's very suiting.

That is a pretty nice laptop, great specs for the price.

If you are willing to wait about a month or so, the new penryn processors are coming to notebooks, and a lot of makers are upgrading their vid cards to the 8800 series as well.

This laptop (out now) doesnt have the penryn cpu but it does have the awesome video card. it is $1400 though.

a desktop.

No matter how great your laptop is, it will still be beat by a desktop due to cooling issues (gaming=lots of heat=the faster laptop will die). you would be better off with a sff pc like a shuttle than a laptop for anything other than occasional gaming.

umm I think thats what he intends to do, no one wants to stay in the dorms and play video games all day long.

That CPU bottlenecks the GPU, otherwise great computer.

Here is a great review of this Notebook: http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4208

Note that best buy says the resolution is 1280x800 but it is really 1440x900!
