ok my powerbook has a broken LCD the crack is internal and a dent on the bottom of the computer. apple's warranty does not cover it and it would cost 1,245 to repair. is there anything i can do with this broken laptop? can i get much for parts or anything. someone please state some good options for me

Maybe the 2.5" micro drive, if it's undamaged. To be honest though, a broken laptop like yours isn't worth much... pretty much paper weight at this point.

If you want to stick with a Mac, I suggest getting a Macbook for $1100, or the Pro for $1800. Salvage what you can and sell the PB.
yea but can't i sell the parts of the broken one on ebay or something?
You probably won't get much for it but might as well try. I'd salvage the hard drive and at least transfer the data over to your new laptop.
Buy a monitor and plug it into that?
Yeah, that's probably what I'd do, too. It can be a decent email/internet/IM set up for someone.

Right - so donate it to charity and write it off your taxes (if it still works)

Sorry to dig up an old thread - but how did you pay for it?

Some credit card companies offer theft/damage protection on major purchases. I used to work for a notebook company, and AMX and VISA paid for cracked screens all the time.

You could probably find a new screen on ebay. I wouldn't guess they'd be cheap though as I know even shitty old Dell LCDs go for $100-600.

What would Brian Boitano do?

It was under warranty and Apple won't cover it? And $1245 to fix? Damn Apple must rape you on the repair costs of their laptops just like they do for iPods.

Get a Dell with their accidental care coverage (or whatever it's called.) That covers you even if the damage is from you dropping it, spilling coffee in the keyboard, etc. IIRC.

IMO, never buy a laptop without a warranty that will cover damage even if it is a result of your own fuck ups. They're just too fragile.

What did you end up doing, writing it off as a loss?

yea i just have it there sitting. i'm thinking of looking on ebay for those screen tho. the computer works perfect just the screen is fucked up

i think my dad is going to help me buy the macbook pro... he's going to pay what it would cost to get it repaired and i will pay the rest

Your not going to be able to reconnect the screen. You'll buy one for $600 then have to pay someone $300 to install it. Sell that broke one on ebay get $600-$900 for it. Put that towards a new macbook.
