What should I know about the different versions of the XBL Starter Kit?

I'll be going on Xbox live later this month, so I'm looking for a 12-month starter kit. I know there are different versions out there. Do they just pack in a different game or is the hardware somehow different? On outpost.com the regular one with Crimson Skies is $70, but if you get "version 3" with MechAssault it is $57.99. That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. But if the kit itself is supposed to be superior with later versions I guess I'll go for the latest one. Thanks for any advice.

Go ahead and do the MechAssault one. They both include the same stuff save for each game. XBL automatically updates when you install it, so you won't be getting an out-dated version.

Yep, they are all the same essentially....just a different game. XBL will automaticlly update the software as stated above.

So, get the one with the game you want.

No difference. I found a version 1 pack for 40 bucks last year. I didn't care to pay for the game they include. I wish they would go back to selling a stand-alone kit w/o the game. I know a lot of people that would get the service if they didn't have to drop 70 bones initially.

Thanks for the info guys! I got all suspicious when I saw the lower prices for older versions, but it sounds like I really don't have anything to lose. I was more interested in MechAssault anyway. 8) But now that I know they're all basically the same I'll look around a little more. If I can get a version 1 or 2 for cheaper, than that's even better.

If you can find version 1 without the game get that, you can probably find them at lower chain stores like FYE or a random video shop somehwere. It says the code is expired but you can actually still use it.

I just got the year long subscription with crimson skies and headset for $50 with that $20 off coupon at best buy- you should look into that. Crimson skies is awesome.

Jonny, that is a very violent avatar you got there. Wait a second, I shouldn't be talking....

Nevermind.

Thats some cool work youve got going there Xevious- Im an artist as well tho more on the comic booking and horror film end. Im looking forward to teh finished product.

If you want both Mechassault and Crimson Skies, I suggest getting the XBL kit with Skies included. Then you can pick up Mechassault pretty cheap. And Crimson Skies is a very good game.

I'm not overly concerned about either MechAssault or Crimson Skies, I pretty much just want to be on Xbox live in time for Mortal Kombat 6 (already have it pre-ordered). So if I could pay less for a Live Kit with no game, I wouldn't mind at all.

Someone ealier in the thread alluded to the code being expired, for older versions of the kit... what's that all about?

Well a year of Service is $50. As it is I have the option to just pay $10 more than that to get a game and headset. I wouldn't mind 2 free months though.
