What to do with old cell phones?

My family's phone contract renews next month, so we're probably getting new phones fucking again. Are old cell phones useful for anything? I've sold, donated and recycled old phones before, but are there any other options? Do old phones still work with 911 emergency calls? How about 311, toll free calls, or calling card calls?

Old phones still work for 911 calls.

I keep one or two old ones, just in case my current one breaks. Sim cards are quite resilient, so they're easy to recover from an accident.

Call a local women's shelter and see if they take 'em for donations, cause like the dude says:

Most shelters will take them.

THIS IS IMPORTANT!!!

Women's shelters are ALWAYS in need of cell phones. They give these to women who are in abusive relationships and may need to call 911 to be rescued.

if you have verizon they will just give you a new phone if you re up with their new plan. sell them on ebay and make some extra money. Or do like the guy above me said and donate them to womens shelters so when their abusive husbands and boyfrields find them and are about to attack them they can call 911

Whatever you decide to do, just please do not throw them in the garbage. There's a lot of very bad stuff in there (especially in the battery) that we DO NOT want free in the environment.
