sold book for $115, shipped it in flat rate box, no insurance. he claims that the pages were soaked during shipping. doesnt want to return it because he needs it but is trying to get money back

now he is saying it is worse than he originally thought, I dont know how that makes sense and is threatening to open up a dispute.

he has very good feebdack

I just got pictures and it doesnt look wet but the pages are crinkled like when you bend a book from day to day use. it wasnt shipped like this. should I ignore it because I feel like he is trying to get money from me? I feel like I have leverage because he decided not to file a dispute and its been two weeks

I would just issue a partial refund, and in the future always get insurance for anything over $100

I wouldn't give him anything unless he sends the book back. Simple as that. Otherwise tell him that's not how you sent it and HE didn't pay for insurance. Plus it's been 2 weeks.

see the problem is I dont remember if I gave the option for insurance. I included free shipping, is there a way to see if I included the option?

Here in southern California we've been getting alot of rain lately and when the mail carrier drops off the mail it is almost completely soaked. Fortunately I was not expecting any usps packages.

As far as being clear I think the buyer has something like 2 months to file a dispute. But yeah on pricier items always insist on insurance.

Pretty sure that whenever the buyer is paying - there is an option to purchase insurance regardless if you offer it or not. If they pay for it, you're notified they bought insurance. You still don't have to purchase insurance, but they might call you on it.

If you have the eBay emails sent to you, you should have the "You have received payment from JohnnyShitbag0666 for your shitty book" and it will tell you if he paid for insurance or not.

Hm, I dunno. If he has good feedback, and a lot, I would offer him 10-15 bucks in goodwill. I would take that hit - however, if he demands more, just ask him to send the book back (keep in mind this means you would have to give him a full refund)

A lot of bad opinions here. As a seller on Ebay it's your duty to ensure the item arrives safely to the buyer. If the book got wet during shipment it's your fault. It's not the buyers fault for not buying insurance. The item doesn't transfer possession until it arrives in good condition to the buyer -- so it's your obligation to protect your property and ensure that it arrives to the buyer safely -- thus the obligation for insurance lies on you, not the buyer.

Think of it this way, if you bought a book on Amazon, and it arrived soaked -- would you just say "oh well" because you didn't buy insurance for it? Of course not, you'd be pissed and call customer service and ask for a new one to be sent.

This situation is no different. Your best bet is to refund some money if they will agree to that. Otherwise they can file a "item not as described" claim with Paypal and get the full amount refunded.

i second the above.

Ebay no longer allows you to to get the buyer to pay for insurance. as above, it is your responsibility taht the item arrives safely to the buyer. its your fault. you would likely have to pay return shipping if you want it back before providing a refund, but you will have to refund him i presume.

Not so true. Shipping is beyond the sellers control, provided they pack it reasonably. The reason people call is because for shipping claims the shipper/seller has to contact the delivery company. Trust me I've been there twice when UPS lost my Saturn lot for 2 months and dropped a laptop I ordered.

If he sends it back, I'd refund his money. Otherwise, I'd try to come to terms on a partial refund. On a side note, situations like this is why I stick with UPS since they include $100 worth of insurance automatically.

If anyone is at fault for the damages, it's USPS, but good luck getting any kind of response from them. They usually just put the damaged item in a plastic bag with a "My bad!!" note.
