What was your best yard sale video game finds

dwsscs

CAGiversary!
Spring is coming soon, yard sales are the best place to pick up stuff on the cheap. You have to be persistent and have some patience. I have picked up some cool deals in the past 3 years going to them. Most notable:

PSX, and Driving wheel, pedals, $10
NES with controllers, light gun, mario/duck hunt like new, $5
Atari 2600 wooden one, with controllers, paddles, about 10 or so games, $5
Mario Kart 64, Donkey Kong 64, Mario 64, $1 each
tons of random PS, N64, SNES, NES games for a buck or 2 complete

Nothing yet, but here's to hoping - I even woke up at 7am one morning and drove 'til about 2.. only thing I found was Pantera's "Vulgar Display Of Power" for 50 cents.. that was a good deal.

Best so far:
One giant box containing:
1 Sega Genesis Model 1 with hookups
2 Sega Genesis Model 2s with hookups for both
6 controllers
53 games, only a handful were sports games, only 1 duplicate
Total price: $5

generic smurf character plushy, which i washed and gave to my ex who loved smurfs, then stupidly checked ebay the next day and saw one selling for like 20 bucks. I paid a quarter. I remember back when i was a kid my dad bought an intellivision with 12 games for 8 bucks, i had all the classics. Tron, both AD&D games, beauty and the beast(which was a donkey kong rip-off)

One of those 53 better have been Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, or else you wasted your money :!:

This isn't a find, but a big mistake on my part. I had a garage sale about four years ago. I sold my NES, about 20 games, and all complete, for about $30. I had Castlevania 1 & 2, Zelda, Kid Icarus, and Metroid amongst them.

Wow you guys are lucky.

The only things I have gotten so far was:
A PS1 controller for $3
A Sega Genesis 3 with 2 controllers and 2 NES controllers and 2 games for $8 but it was missing the connectors. So I am in search of another Gensis for power and Cables.

I feel your pain bro. I traded in my Genesis with over 20 games to EB when I was a kid for some measly credit. It will forever haunt me.

NES system, 50 games - $50.

Among the games:
Stadium Events
Tengen Tetris
Wow
The best part was, they had it all down in the basement. I asked if they had any video game stuff and the guy goes "Oh yeah, we forgot to bring it out". It turned out their son used to work at Kaybee as a Manager and was getting rid of all the stuff he had accumulated.

The lesson: Always ask if the garage sale has any video games.

Some nice finds listed.

Is Tengen Tetris valuable or something? I think I have a copy I picked up in a big lot. I'll have to check.

My best find is probably:

Atari 2600 (heavy sixer) w/ 2 joysticks, 2 sets of paddles, 2 racing paddles (single paddles), dozen + games and WIRELESS JOYSTICKS (they work!) all for $5. The wireless Atari joysticks are probably the pride of my collection. They aren't all that valuable, but they are damn cool.

Other stuff that stands out:
* Jaguar complete in (bashed up) box - $4
* Atari 5200 complete in (mint) box - $2
* 7 or 8 PC games (CIB) for $0.25 each.
* Massive box of Legos (~ 20 pounds) - $1
* "Our Lady of Suffering Warriors" T-Shirt with a picture of an Indian Chief - $0.25

Update: Well hot damn, cart only Tengen Tetris apparently goes for $25+ on eBay. I think mine will be going up pretty soon :)

This past summer for $117 I found:
(EDIT: FOUND ANOTHER SALE & ADDED IT)
-I went to 3 separate street sales/garage sales this rainy Saturday morning looking for some finds. After all was said and done I had spent $28 on nearly 40 games for 6 different systems. I got all kinds of deals from these places but the total is all that matters, check out my finds and tell me what you think! Some of this will end up on my tradelist @ http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=143236 in the next update so check that out too.
-If you’d ask me I gave one hell of a present to myself, it’s my damn birthday today!

My digital camera is being lent out so I sadly have no pictures to look at, maybe in a week though...

Anyway here is my haul of $29:

SNES
$5-Complete system w/ 3 controllers [no discoloration]

$7-Super-R-Type
-Doomsday Warrior [w/ manual]
-Killer Instinct

Gameboy Color
$7-Purple GBC system complete
-Outlet Plug
-Pelican screen magnifier
-Tetris DX

NES
$10-Rygar
-Star Voyager
-NARC
-Metriod
-Skykid
-Trojan
-Karnov
-Excitebike
-Winter Games
-Star Force
-Rolling Thunder
-WWF Wrestle Mania
-Kung Fu
-Solar Jetman
-World Cup
-Willow
-Rush'n Attack
-Skate or Die
-Tag Team Wrestleing
-Karate Champ
-Renegade

...all are cart only unless noted. I think that the SNES for $5 was a killer and even though none of those NES games are really hard to find for $10 I wasen't going to pass it up. I was looking for those three SNES games for some time now so I was willing to pay a little extra for them. After reading the handheld in the bathroom topic I had to pick up the GBC on the cheap. Chances are the SNES & NES system and games will wind up on my trade and sale list in a few hours. Whatever I don't love will be hitting the shelf so if you want something on here then write up about it. In the end what do you guys think?
I know that's a lot to look through but those are my finds over the summer (I may have moe but can't find the posts). What do you think?

So for you guys who have excellent finds.

Like, how do you get so much for so little money? Are these the prices they offer? I would feel like a complete scumbag offering somebody $4 for a boxed Atari 5200 with 30 games.

How does it work?

So true. I've picked up a few things this way. Seems like almost everyone has some old video games stashed in the basement. And seems like nearly every parent briefly fantasizes about clearing out all of their kids vidgames whenever I ask

I got for the SNES:

Chrono Trigger
FFII
FFIII
Earthbound
Breath of Fire
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Lufia 2
for like $55.00. Everything had boxes and instructions. Earthbound had a big box that included a strategy guide. I almost $hit myself when I saw this stuff lying around for sale.

Since my post on page 1 is too huge already...I'll continue my finds here with another I found in September. This brings my total cost for this post and the one on the previous page to $149... I'm sorry but I think I took the cake on this thread.
9/25/04 FOR THE PRICE OF $32:

-Super Mario Kart complete
-Super Mario All-Stars cart & manual

-4 SNES 1st party controllers

N64
-NINTENDO 64 system (complete, all hookups, original packaging)

-Legend of Zelda Orcania of Time Collectors Edt. complete
-Super Mario 64 sealed

-N64 memory card

XBOX
-Rayman Arena complete

PS2
-Madden 2002 complete

...all for the low low price of $32...now I picked up all of this at three seperate places so of course I didn't spend a huge amount on say...Madden 2002. After all is said and done those complete SNES games & complete N64 are quite respectable, don't you think?

Between what you've found, ryan, and the stuff I've seen wubb pull out of thin air, I might have to start looking into some garage sale/flea market hunting. :D

Great haul on all of that stuff.

Your best bargaining angle is to offer to buy two or more things they are selling at some sort of combined discount price. For example I got the boxed 5200 with a SNES for $10 - the SNES was priced at $10 and the 5200 at mabe $3 or $4 so I asked for both at $10.

I'll sometimes try to haggle down a single item, but often I've found the prices are so good there's no point to really haggling. (For example the Atari 2600 lot was priced at $5.) Heck the worst thing that will happen is the seller will stay firm on the price and you just end up paying the full price anyway. Basically I'd suggest just not being an ass about it.

And I never haggle at church sales. Bad form IMO.

Only if you don't go to confessional afterwards.

I found Jim Henson's Labyrinth for Sega CD on a blanket in someones front yard during a yard sale for $5 bucks once.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was more of a rare find than I had anticipated. Has anyone played it? It's really cool! It's the same genre as Kamen Rider. The game is entirely cinematic; you have you to press the right button at the right moment, or else you lose. This can get somewhat tedious and repetitive over time. The grainy video is to be expected since its Sega CD. Overall, it's an okay game. I recommend it if you're a fan of cinematic Sega CD games and/or a fan of the movie.

I have never seen nor heard of that game.

Only decent find I've ever had is I got this nice CD rack for like 2 bucks that I hold a fair amount of games on

man you people in pittsburgh are the most lucky people i know, out here in seattle, ive been to a ton of garage sales and they are almost *all* exlcusivly old lady stuff.

Sometimes i come across a younger female who might (play games) own things. they always tell other people how great ebay is. I roll my eyes, and then know, you cant find crap in seattle garage sales.

im sticking to the goodwills and pawn shops.

Pittsburgh's a place where people bring their families and then the kids leave...and usually don't come back. It's a place where the population is slowly getting older so at most sales there is a family wanting to ditch their old childrens junk. You won't find this in any newer or up and coming cities because people don't stay long enough to acquire enough junk or settle down long enough to have a family. Established, old, or family cities are where the best goods are to be found.

Let's see..

This was a very nice find; an NES and thirteen games for a dollar. The three that I bought later that day brought the total cost up to $11, but it was still an amazing deal. Especially since I didn't have any of the sports games that came in the box. Blades of Steel and Ice Hockey really ARE classics. :D

I also found a Genesis with two controllers (one a six-button) and maybe ten or so games for $12 later that summer. I don't think I have a topic about that here or even a list of the games, but what possible reason do you have not to believe me?

Also, I'm proud of my GBA finds. Mario Kart, Wario Land 4, Golden Sun, Pinball of the Dead, and a boxed Yu-Gi-Oh 2004 game for $5 apiece.

And lest I forget, the PC games. Starcraft for a quarter, and a literal stack of others - Max Payne, Sims expansion packs, Incredible Creatures (which has JUST been released when I found it) for a dollar each.

Some of these deals are much, much better than mine, but I'm happy with my finds. That's all that matters, right? :)

living in seattle as well, i know exactly what you mean.

2 NES systems one front loader and one toploader, SNES with mouse, 7 Nes games for 2 dollars. I bought this box labeled Nes junk I told the guy how much he said 2 dollars. I almost game him five just to be nice but I am a cheapass and gave him his two dollars and ran.

Hit a G-Sale in my old neighborhood and found a box full of stuff. I asked how much and was told $8. Of course, I bought it and got...
- 1 Atari 2600 Jr complete with cables/controllers.
- 24 Atari 2600 game cartridges.
- 1 Atari 5200 console complete with cables/controllers.
- 2 Atari 5200 game cartridges.
- 1 Atari 7800 console complete with cables/controllers.
- 1 Atari 7800 game catridge.
- a BUNCH of Atari catalogs/game manuals/etc.

I turned that $8 into a good bit of cash by selling the stuff at the next G-Sale we had...mwuahahaha. :}

You have to realize that most of the time when you go to these sales. People are trying to get rid of stuff, and doesn't necessarily care about the price. Usually the stuff is priced, if I think its unreasonable I offer less. Most of the time its reasonable or just plain cheap.

Example: A box of NES stuff unpriced, I ask how much do you want for this? They say $5 I say ok. My best deals have come from their prices without haggling. Its not rocket science, but remember to carry cash!!

That's exactly how I got the Genesis stuff I posted earlier. I saw a large box that had a model 1 Genesis on it with 6 games. I asked how much for the games and she told me that I could have the whole box of stuff for $5. She mentioned it was her sons stuff and it was just taking up space. I flipped open the box to put the console and games in and saw more games and systems. I didn't realize just how much was in there until I got home.

I have two really good finds which include:

1) Mint/complete copy of Suikoden II for $8.

2) Five...that's right...FIVE Brand New!Sega Saturn twin-sticks in the box for $13! Easily my luckiest/best find.
