What's in the PS Store (5/31/16): Neon Chrome, Oxenfree, Primal, There Came an Echo, Plague Inc, & More!

PSN store is about as simple and easy a UI as I think you could have for something that needs the ability to function without a keyboard and a mouse as well. Both XBLA and PSN do have the problem of older, less popular titles getting buried, but I have to think that that kind of thing has got to be inevitable.

I can't complain about the content too much. I have enough of a time keeping up with new disc releases and my tremendous backlog to worry about digital downloads as well. As long as some good PSOne, etc. stuff comes out eventually, I'll be good.
So what is in the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection demo anyway?
I'm not sure but it's only 111 MB, so I'm guessing it gives you a couple games and a time limit. I'll download it and see what it offers.

Edit: Yeah, it offers Sonic 3, Streets of Rage 3, and Space Harrier. That's it.

Edit 2: Nope, you get a few minutes to play each game at a time.

Lame, thanks for trying it, I had the game but was still curious.
Is there any chance of a Pixeljunk Monsters sale anytime soon?
I could swear it was on sale recently, but someone feel free to correct me as time has been flying by in 2009 so far.

And the whole PSOne thing, of course. It's fuckin' ridiculous, man.

Thanks you for adding your feelings. I like the store personally....it could be alot worse...obviously you've played around with wii's online store talk about a headache.

Kung-fu game is bound to have alot of DLC (costumes, etc.) my personal prediction.

where it's a crapshoot as to what PSN games we're getting until the minute it's released (unless the developer tells us so ahead of time).

Wow...

If you have a Japanese PSN, use it to download the Sonic The Hedgehog video named "Night of the Wherewolf" ... it's rouglhy 750 mb, but it's really damn good even for people who hate sonic.

it's basically a 10 min cartoon short done damn well.

I dunno. Stupid classes.

If it is, I'm totally downloading it. Maybe the story will be less annoying if it's in Japanese.

EDIT - I'm actually about 2 hours into the US version for only the second time in my life. I never realized how much RPG dialog has improved since 1997 until I blew up a Shinra reactor in 2009. For a long time I've scoffed at a remake of FF7, not understanding the point. Now I do, that shit needs a new script.

"...

...

...

shit!"

That doesn't help sculpt the dramatic intrigue between Barrett and Cloud?

I'm doubting it hit the PS Store in Japan. (1) I would have known already, as I checked the store yesterday afternoon, and (2) digitally deliverable FFVII would have had a far bigger reaction.

Damn. Thanks for the heads up. Talk about out of the fucking blue. I'll be skipping it at 1500 yen, I was ready for another 600 yen title.

Holy balls. That looks legit, since a lot of the items I saw in the "what's new" panel yesterday are up there correctly in the Joystiq picture.

I'll double check when I get home in an hour or so.

Damn you guys are skeptical. N4G is reporting that the Hong Kong store is getting it today as well. That could provide an English version.

Eh, I have FFVII, so not worthwhile to me. I would love for them to put FFVIII up though since I don't own it and would like to play it again.

But it doesn't matter either way, since we probably won't get any amirite!?
MKII seems like it'll always stay as the all time most downloaded PSN game.
I can understand why. It's by far the best version of MK ever! I can still remember people standing in line to buy it for SNES on "Fatality Friday" way back in the day (of course I was one of them).

:applause:

I wish the PSN would get a good version of UMK3. With the whole "you can't map your own controls" bullshit with the XBLA version, that game's basically unplayable for me.

I agree. I hate using the 360 controller for it though is my main problem.

It's a one time "trial" per Sony. I guess if enough people don't buy it, they'll stop? Naaahhh, that makes too much sense for Sony. ;)

What the hell are people who don't/can't take their PSP online supposed to do?

fuck that, I guess I'm skipping Patapon 2.

EDIT - I just realized that every day Sony finds new ways to not take my money. First is the constant stream of NOTHING in the form of US PSOne releases and now this. fucking brilliant.

My dad's in the same boat. His PSP's memory stick reader crapped out on him. Patapon was the only non-sports game he has for his collection, and one of his favorite titles for the system. So that's a sale lost for Patapon 2 right there since my dad can't save anything to his memory stick.

^ i doubt everyone's PSP's mem stick reader crapped out, so losing one sale don't hurt :p

As to Halo05, to the PSPs can't go on-line or don't care, well, if Patapon 2 is indeed going UMD-less, then tough luck? I mean what else you can do besides skipping the title? I guess Sony don't want your money as well as some others. It's a shame, i know, but what do i care, i'm all set for it :)

There are multiple ways to download this:

1. Online store on PSP (you don't have wifi?)
2. Download on your PS3, transfer to PSP.
3. Download on your PC, transfer to PSP.

I'm not holding myself up as an example of someone who isn't going online with my PS3/PSP. I can do it, I have the technical expertise. I'm more worried about people buying the game who aren't technically saavy. They get home, see the little download code as opposed to the UMD and rush back to the store claiming that they didn't receive their game.

I realize there will be little disclaimers and whatnot on the packaging but I really don't know how many people read stuff like that.

Sony has lost me on this unless they release a physical UMD at some point down the road. I spend a great deal of time switching my PSP between "US" and "Japan" modes because of my downloaded Japanese PSOne titles, I'm not going to further complicate the switching by adding another moving part.

GTAIV: The Lost and the Damned did very well in stores for a download code.
I really don't think it'll be that big a problem.

In my case, I'm importing a Euro UMD.

TikGames (San Mateo, CA) and Creat Studios (Canton, MA) today announced the upcoming release of premium downloadable content for their hit PLAYSTATION®Network (PSN) games, Magic Ball, Cuboid and Mahjong Tales: Ancient Wisdom. Booster Packs will be available for download on the PLAYSTATION3® computer entertainment system, offered via the PLAYSTATION®Network, beginning Thursday, April 16th with the release of the Magic Ball Booster Pack, with additional Booster Packs to follow in the coming weeks.

Magic Ball, a fresh spin on classic brick-breaking gameplay in which players bust apart 3D environments, offers gamers new action with the release of the Magic Ball Booster Pack, featuring a whole new world to destroy. Players will be able to smash their way through 25 all new magical, witch-themed levels, earning a series of new trophies along the way. Custom music support will also be made available via a free patch download.

Cuboid, a mind-bending 3D puzzle game, will offer gamers three different options for add-on content. The Cuboid Booster Pack contains 33 new levels that will test even the best players’ skills, rewarding gamers with new trophies. The Cuboid Level Editor allows players to become level designers and challenge others with their own custom levels. Players can either create a brand new level from scratch, or improve upon any existing level, created by other players or taken from the original campaigns. User-created levels can be uploaded to the PSN where they will be made available to other players (who have downloaded the free patch). Players can also earn trophies for creating their own levels, and for rating the levels created by others.

“Gamers are going to thoroughly enjoy the Cuboid Level Editor,” said Anatoly Tikhman, founder and CEO of TikGames. “With this new add-on, anyone can take on the role of game designer to create and share levels with the rest of the Cuboid online community. Gamers can choose to create simple yet entertaining levels, or try to build levels that will challenge even the most cunning Cuboid players.”
The Cuboid Bundle Pack includes both the Booster Pack (33 new levels) and the Level Editor. Custom music support for Cuboid is also on its way via a free patch download.
The Mahjong Tales: Ancient Wisdom Booster Pack features 25 all new layouts to beat in Infinity mode, as well as a level editor that allows players to create their own layouts from scratch and share their creations with other gamers by hosting an online multiplayer game on their custom-created level. Players can then save any new customized level that they have created or played via online multiplayer invitation to their HDD. Also included is a series of new trophies, obtainable by only the most dedicated Mahjong players. Highly-requested mouse support will also be made available via a free patch download.

“We are thrilled with the response that our first three PlayStation Network titles have received from both the PlayStation community and the media, and we are excited about releasing these Booster Packs to add to the great gaming experiences that so many PSN players are already enjoying,” said Vladimir Starzhevsky, CEO of Creat Studios, Inc. “We have listened to our gamers who have repeatedly asked for more levels, level editors and new trophies, and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver on so many of their requests.”
Magic Ball, Mahjong Tales: Ancient Wisdom and Cuboid additional downloadable content will include PLAYSTATION Trophy support and have been rated “E” for Everyone by the Entertainment Software Rating Board for this platform.

I downloaded TL&D and have enjoyed it thus far. Somehow, at some basic, reptillian level within my mind, it's okay to download addons but not full, previously imagined as retail games.

If Amazon (or Sony) drops Patapon 2 to $10 as a download, I'd probably deal with the hassles.

Crap, I had something else I was about to say but I forgot it... hm.

EDIT - Oh yeah, something about this being a slipperly slope and me not wanting a DD-only future for either console or portable systems.

Especially if it's mentioned on the box and the voucher mentions the various ways to redeem the code.

This whole reaction is pretty interesting.

My first feelings were that I was uncomfortable with the idea. I just didn't like it, and at least wanted the choice for UMD or download.

Then I thought about it. I wouldn't have load times, wouldn't have to store or deal with the UMD, and I wouldn't have to leave the house to buy it. Memory sticks are dirt cheap, and I have at least 3, but even if I didn't, buying a cheap 2GB and being able to store 3-4 loadtime free games on it is pretty appealing.

If I had an iPod Touch, this would all seem like "duh". But it's different with the PSP because that expectation isn't there.

I think, if anything, Sony needs to do a better job selling this. This is the future of the PSP and it could turn what is rapidly becoming a moribund system into something relevant again. But it should be seen as something people want instead of something sprung upon them, and having to drag PSP owners who are sensibly clinging to that which they already know works fine.

I think you've nailed my problem. If my choices were...

$20 UMD version or
$15 download version

I don't think I'd have any complaints. I could pony up the extra 5 bucks for what promises to be more of the same great Patapon gameplay. I wouldn't have to worry about tying it to a specific account or PSP or anything like that. It wouldn't take up much space for people who only have one memory card and don't want to buy more of them.

At the same time, someone who has an abundance of memory cards or a lack of videogame stores could save five bucks and play the same game.

Taking away my choices is no bueno. I endure the Virtual Console mostly because it is the best way to play old games on my new TV. I hooked a Sega Genesis up to my Plasma screen and my eyes bled. If I could, I'd buy something to make my Genesis output component video. As that doesn't exist (that I know of), I'll pay Nintendo to clean Streets of Rage 2 and Super Mario World up for me.
