What's Reasonable for a Sony 1 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo?

CAGiversary!
I've been thinking about picking up one, but what would you say is the highest I should pay for this?

$220? That is almost double the prices I'm use to seeing for it.

The most you should even consider is $140. If you're patient the price will be much lower later in the year as the PSP adds a huge number of prospective MS Duo buyers to the market. The market for the format has been very limited, causing it to carry a premium price compared to more common formats like SD and CF. There is no technical reason for the higher cost, just a matter of production volume.

i paid 59.99 for my 512 and formated 2 movies (shark tales+naploeon dynamite) to fit on it PLUS still have about 60mb left for games or a few mp3's

bestbuy.com chec it...

I agree, $220 is way too high. I have seen them as cheap as $100 but the average price I normally see them is around $150. Epobirs is also right that you should probably just wait a little while. The only reason you are seeing the high prices for the sticks is because most places are sold out. The stores that still have it in stock are upping the price since they are so hard to find. The best bet is to buy a cheap 512 card to get you by for awhile, then buy a 1G when the supply is evened out. There have been good deals the last week or so on the 512. I posted one for $55 a few days ago and I also saw another posting for $60 around the same time. At that price, you could have bought 2G worth of memory for $220.

I've seem them go for 110 to 150, I refuse to pay more than that especially when the 512 cards have been going for about 50-60. If you can buy two 512s for less than a single 1gb then do it because too many stores are trying to gouge the price now that everyone running wild for Memsticks.

I doubt that ZipZoomFly unit will restock at that price. But then, I'm amazed if anyone ever BOUGHT one at that price. Great stuff!

Personally, I did the $149.99 at EBGames when they got them in stock just before launch. And am I glad I did, since as expected, they are SUPER hard to find.

One thing that really ticks me off, is that you can't use SonicStage to move the "sony format" songs to your PSP. It gives you a message about incompatibility, and won't transfer a single song. As a result, I've had to encode my CD to MP3, and move it with Windows Explorer to the music folder. At 128bit MP3, it doesn't sound quite as good as Sony's smaller bit rates IMHO, but at least I have some music.

Meanwhile, I used a tutorial I found online to convert Tron to a Sony file. Required DVD Decrypter, AutoGK, and that Japanese PSP app that's floating around the web. When it was done, I had a working file... but either I choose a bad movie to use, or the lighting and volume weren't very good after conversion.

Exceed, you mention fitting two movies on one 512MB card. What process did you use, and I take it they look great? Would love to hear what you did.

As for the memory card, most places will be out of 1GB stock until the beginning of May. That's straight from SanDisk, just so you know. So I'd go for a 1GB for $150 before shipping and tax if you can find one, otherwise the 512MB units might not be a bad call. Good luck!!!

here is the tutorial i followed, and it works great.

props to the writter, I am just posting it for info, i did not develop the process

i use the lowest stereo audio setting, and the 15fps setting... 29.7 made the files to large to fit 512mb

quality is way above what i expected when it dumped out 200mb movies, so yeah its not as pretty as the spidey 2 that came with it, but if i could fit 8 movies on a UMD id do it my way instead!

Actually, $220 is about right for the SONY 1 GB PRO DUO, which is what the OP asked for. Of course, it'd be much cheaper to get other cards like sandisk, which goes for as cheap as $100 like you said.

Yeah, I heard the brand makes a big difference. Sony's would cost significantly more like you posted right?
