What's still worth playing on the PSX?

Also are you honestly recommending that someone old enough know and care about this site to play a rugrats game that's probably ~10 years old? That's worth playing?

Here are some games I can still play and have a blast with:

Twisted Metal 1/2
Final Fantasy 7/9 (8 is the devil)
Breath of Fire 3/4
Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy Tactics
Castlevania: SOTN
Grandia
Lunar Remakes...if you like old school rpgs, get these
Star Ocean: 2nd Story...best SO game IMO
Suikoden 1 and 2...S2 is probably one of my favorite rpgs ever
Wild Arms 1/2
Intelligent Qube
Tomba
Klonoa
Tactics Ogre
Arc the Lad Collection

There's also some pretty dreadful games with terrible early 3D and I have a hard time even touching some of them.

Top Shop, one of the later Agetec budget releases, is a flawed, relatively unbalanced, often frustrating, and very fun board game. We would play it in parties with nongamers (college girls, ranging from biochem majors to dropout cashiers) and everyone picked up on it within a few turns. If everyone decides to gang up on one person, the game is hell for them, so bring a sense of humor.

Extreme Skydiving was a game in a similar situation that plays like how Bust A Groove should have. It's not strictly a rhythm game, more like Simon with controller motions, but the different teams, two-player mode, and attack sequences are all done very well and, as far as I can tell, balanced. On the other hand, this is "skydiving," so unless your friends are majoring in game design it could get you laughed out of your own house.

When I was looking for these games, they were around $2-3 tops for new condition. Of course they aren't as good as the more obvious games listed (Could we get Final Fantasy VII some more? No way OP picked up on that one.) but they were among the best fun/value ratios in my collection.

I always used to play CTR (Crash Team Racing) a lot. The adventure portion of the game was awesome. I still think that it is a pretty good racing game.

Recently I finished Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Highly recommend it.

Rogue Trip!

I'm kinda partial to Devil Dice...absolutely love that game (and it's sequel, Bombastic on the PS2)

Oh, and Return Fire. I still wish I hadn't sold my copy - this game is dying for an XBLA Remake...

I've been meaning to go back and play Silent Hill, Arc the Lad, the Lunars, and Valkyrie Profile again. Might give some of the Atlus games a shot, too.

Don't know why but my favorite version of Worms is the PSX Worms Armageddon.
Final Fantasy Tactics holds up really well.
I agree. I also don't think it gets really low fps like War of the Lions strangely does.
Pretty much anything in 2D is still worth playing. Most 3D games (except RPGS like FFVII) are going to look and control so badly that nostalgia is the only reason to play them.
Yep. The exceptions are those that remain unique and can be had for cheap. Especially those that used 3D in a simple fashion so they didn't age badly. They'd transfer pretty directly to the DS.

Some of the 3D is horrible by today's standards. Some of it was kind of awful then but the game was interesting enough to make the difference. One good RPG example is Legacy of Legaia. This had a combat metaphor based on fighting games that distinguished it from the crowd but man it was unattractive even when new.

Seeing how everyone is just kinda listing everything they even slightly enjoyed on PSX, ill do something slightly different. Since this is CAG ill just say that except for a few exceptional games such as MGS, Oddworld, Legacy of Kain, etc etc, you best bang for your buck are the RPGs. Any FF will be great choices since they all last 40+ hours plus most anything else from square but those depend on taste. As for aging well, you know that any RPG strength lays with the story so also a good reason to look there. And im sure I saw it listed above but my one recommendation would be Xenogears which looks super dated but is one of the best RPGs of all time. Where you go from there depends on your tastes.

Xenogears does not hold up well from a game play perspective. The battle system is clunky and the dungeon segments have horrible platforming.

That said the story is very engaging, you have to play through it at least once. It did however, confuse the hell out of me.

After playing SFII Remix on XBLA, I dug out my PSX to play SF Alpha 2 & Marvel Super Heroes over the weekend, they've held up fantastically. And I do like the PSX controllers for SF much more than I do the 360 controller.
SF ALPHA 1-3 are amazing games, they have the fun of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 with a roster more in line w/ SF II.
Just moved SF Alpha 3 from my 'watch' list to my 'requested' list on Goozex because of this! It's in the mail.

I've never really spent money on fighters, ever, because I'm always casual when it comes to fighting games.

Here's some I'd recommend:

Street Fighter Collection
Bomberman Party Edition
Dragon Warrior VII
Final Fantasy games
Grid Runner
Harvest Moon: Back to Nature
Hot Shots Golf
Parappa the Rapper
Soul Blade
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
Strider 2

These are some games I might replay on the PSX

-Action/Adventure-
1. Mega Man X 4

2. Resident Evil 2 (I really can't think of a reason why someone would want to play RE2 today... but I had to put it up for pure nostalgia.)
+ This game was the scariest, for me that is, out of all the Resident Evil series, because of this one particular part in the game...
during second scenario where mr. x popped up everywhere... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwGhMohJPzQ&feature=related check 6:30 and 7:14

-RPG-
1. Lunar Silver Star Story (This game, although not original to PSX, quintessentially captures the essence of old console rpg in one nice little box [a good looking manual to boot too]).
2. Final Fantasy 9

-Racing-
1. Ridge Racer 4
2. Gran Turismo 2 (wouldn't play this again, but probably the pinnacle of the Gran Turismo series)

-Sports-
I really want to name at least 2... but I only could think of one thats worth playing today
1. NFL Blitz 2000

-Fighting-
I really wouldn't turn to the PSX to play a fighting game today (I would rather play it on a different port or there is a better sequel on a different platform) but if I had to choose then...
1. Pocket Fighter
2. Street Fighter Alpha 3 (prefer playing this on the Dreamcast though)

theres bunch of more games but these are the one I would most likely play again

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain - a competent Zelda clone with a kick ass story and great voice acting, even by today's standards.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver - a prettier sequel and Tomb Raider clone, all the way down to the block puzzles (which can be annoying). I've never actually finished it, but the story and voice work are once again pretty damn good.
Mega Man X4 and X5 - are fun twice over playing as Mega Man and Zero. Personally, I'd skip X6.
FF:Tactics - although if you have a PSP I couldn't imagine not playing the War of the Lions remake instead. Superior translation, a couple more characters, and awesome cutscenes.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - if you've played Super Metroid or any Castlevania on a portable since 2000, you know why I'd even suggest it.
Suikoden 1 & 2 - thoroughly enjoyable 2D RPGs with decent plots, good music, and classic gameplay.
Tomba & Klonoa - badass 2.5D platformers, though Klonoa will be remade soon for the Wii. Never played Tomba 2, but it could be awesome.
Metal Gear Solid - only one I've bothered to finish.
FF VIII and IX - skip VII :whistle2:D . VIII wins on gameplay (unless you use summons a lot, then it sucks) and IX wins on charm and characters. VII has a great plot, but the poor translation and/or awkward dialog drags it down a bit. It's everyone's favorite though, I just can't get into it any more.
Mega Man Legends 1 & 2- good use of 3D and cool characters.
Vagrant Story - combat is bad ass, story is pretty good too.
Twisted Metal 2 - only game of the PSOne gen that was any good.
Silent Hill - played this one again back when the movie came out. Still creepy as hell. Children that giggle when they stab you in the shins are pretty effed up. Plot is better than the movie's, even if the movie was based off of it.
Alundra - Zelda only it's hard as all hell. The puzzles are pretty awesome, and the plot is pretty effed up (people in town are constantly dying in their sleep).
Valkyrie Profile - though once again, you can just play the PSP rerelease.

Street Fighter Alpha 3...I think I'm giving up on this one. I even bought a $20 wireless stick and I still can't get some of the moves to perform reliably. I'm doing hadouken and still seeing my guy jumping forward on occasion. These fighting move sets seem so dated. Not having this kind of problem with Tekken 5.

not enough of you guys mention Vagrant Story. What's wrong with you people!! That's one of the top, if not THE best game to come out of the PS1 generation and is still quite enjoyable today. Sadly, there's no counterpart this generation.

Is this game similar to fallout 3 where you attack certain body parts? If so, maybe I should play my disc only version.

Vagrant Story is also a great game...
however, I personally didn't like the environment design
overall the story was prolly one of the best Square has ever created

apparently it is somehow in the same universe of FF Tactics and FF 12

Yeah I am trading for Vagrant Story right now. I tried to play a PSX emulation version but it was too hard with my keyboard.

If you want a Mario Kart style game I am finding that Crash Team Racing is a suitable clone.

I have a sealed copy of Dino Crisis that I found at HPB for $6. Is it worth opening and giving a go? I just replayed Resident Evil 2 to much enjoyment (although that sucker is short).

I highly recommend Silent Hill #1. That game literally scared the crap out of me in as a kiddo. I rented it, made it to the first scene where he ignites his lighter to guide his way, then the babies attacked. I promptly turned the game off and took it back to the rental store hahah. But ya gotta go back and beat these things.

Camera sucks due to the fact that its a faster paced game than RE (its the same camera) but overall its worth a play. Story is good and gameplay is fun (though aiming feels off due to the camera). Its a short game though, about 6 hours or so
Surprised if it hasn't been brought it up yet, I LOVED Medievil for the ps1
I just got it off Goozex. I messed around with it a bit to see if it worked. I LOL-ed at some of the dialogue. Humor is pretty good. But the gameplay seems a bit...rickety and old. I'll give it its due later.

What do you remember about this one? [Anything about M2?]

I used to own Medievil over a decade ago. I recall it being an interesting game that was fun to fool around with but nothing I ever considered finishing. I ended up trading it to the old school EBGames for chump change.

No one has seemed to play the sequel for some reason though.

If you're in an RPG mood, three PSX games I STILL play:

Suikoden II (this is going to cost you a pretty penny though, I believe it might be the most expensive on the system. It's one of them at least).

FFT

Chrono Cross (not as good as Trigger, but still excellent)

Also, whoever mentioned Bushido Blade, that definitely brought back memories. Loved that game.
