I was having a discussion with a friend and we were trying to come up with the best three album run by a band in history...

I say:

the bends - ok computer - kid a
vitalogy - no code - yield
i - ii - iii - untitled - houses of the holy (I know that's 5 - best run ever, IMO)

Any thoughts?

I agree with Radiohead and Zeppelin.

This will take some thought. There are so many bands who never even have 3 good albums.

Undertow - Ænima - Lateralus

Fevers & Mirrors - Lifted - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

Parachutes, A Rush of Blood to the Head, and X&Y

Black Celebration, Music for the Masses and Violator

Head on the Door, Kiss Me, Disintigration

People's Instictive...,Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders

Nevermind - In Utero - MTV Unplugged (if that doesn't count, Bleach)

Pretty Hate Machine - Broken (so it's an EP, sue me) - The Downward Spiral

R - Songs for the Deaf - Lullabies to Paralyze

Debut - Post - Homogenic

Surfer Rosa - Doolittle - Bossanova

Dark Side of the Moon - Wish You Were Here - Animals - The Wall

The Doors - Strange Days - Waiting for the Sun - The Soft Parade - Morrison Hotel - L.A. Woman

Bob Dylan - The Freewheeling Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin' - Another Side of Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home - Highway 61 Revisited - Blonde on Blonde - John Wesley Harding - Nashville Skyline BEST RUN EVER!

I'll think of more later ...

Big Lizard in my Backyard, Eat your Paisley, Bucky Fellini, Beelzebubba [four, sue me]
Hell-o, Scumdogs of the Universe, America Must Be Destroyed...then, imho, an unfortunate drop in quality until We Kill Everything
School's Out, Billion Dollar Babies, (Muscle of Love), Greatest Hits..I really dug From the Inside, Flush the Fashion, Special Forces, and Zipper Catches Skin
Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall.

One extra, big deal.
Damn that's a good run...

Rage Against the Machine -> Evil Empire -> Battle of Los Angeles

Mother's Milk -> Blood Sugar Sex Magik -> One Hot Minute

Fungus Amungus -> S.C.I.E.N.C.E. -> Make Yourself

I agree with many posted, like the ATCQ reference as well as Radiohead, Zeppelin, and the Doors.

For ones not already mentioned, have to show love to:

The Roots: Do You Want More?!!!??!, Illadelph Halflife & Things Fall Apart

Rage Against the Machine: Self Titled, Evil Empire & Battle of Los Angeles

Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger, Superunknown & Down on the Upside
Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger, Superunknown & Down on the Upside
I almost listed that, but I didn't think DotU was quite good enough.

With Rage I can only listen to their s/t all the way through, the others get shut off if I'm paying attention.

Media, Blank Wave Arcade, Dance Macabre, Wet from Birth- All of which by the Faint
Such Blinding Stars For Starving Eyes, The Storms Of Early Summer, Domestica, The Ugly Organ- All of which by Cursive

The Clash/ Give 'em Enough Rope/ London Calling

Help!/Rubber Soul/Revolver/Sgt. Pepper

Is This Real/Youth of America/Over the Edge- The Wipers (best Seattle band ever)

All Mod Cons/Setting Sons/Sound Affects (The Jam)

You might as well go on: Magical Mystery Tour - White Album - Yellow Submarine - Abbey Road - Hey Jude - Let It Be

Faith No More: The Real Thing, Angel Dust, King For a Day..., Album of the Year
In Flames: Whoracle, Colony, Clayman
Pantera: Vulger Display of Power, Far Beyond Driven, Great Southern Trendkill

A bunch of others that were listed have been great runs as well, such as Tool, Zeppelin, etc.

Agreed.
Undertow - Ænima - Lateralus
I thought about this but Undertow doesn't live up to the others - I'm really liking 10,000 Days though so there's hope for Tool yet...

Yeah Down on the Upside sounded a little over produced but I have to give it props.

Senorwoohoo is a music journalist so listen to what he says.

Absolutely true, but I wouldn't count Yellow Submarine or Let it Be. Hey Jude wasn't an album.

Dude , no way , Ill Communication is like Check Your Head part 2 .

It was in America. And when you remember that it's a soundtrack, and not a true album, per se, Yellow Submarine is pretty damn good. And Let It Be was a damn good album. Think what you will, but I can't listen to The Long and Winding Road without tearing up.

Yes, Hey Jude was an album in America, but I don't count those. The Beatles tracks on Yellow Submarine are generally excellent, especially Hey Bulldog and It's All Too Much. Let It Be is a spotty album at best. I love The Long and Winding Road, but the originally released version has so many syrupy strings that it makes it treacly beyond belief. Personally, I think the Beatles went downhill after the White Album. Their later stuff is still amazing by any standard other than their own.

I see what you are saying. I certainly agree Let It Be is by no means as good as many of the other Beatles albums. I was thinking of it in more of a general standard rather than a Beatles standard because the thread was a more general thing. We ought to just start a Beatles Chat thread.
