I want to put my gunmetal PS3 on ebay but im too worried about the hassle of shipping it. Anybody have any good ideas, what to put the box in? how much it costs to ship that behemoth?

thanks in advance.

i never ship items this big, i keep my items under 13 oz. so I can just toss it in the mailbox. I know they make flat rate boxes in various sizes, if they had one big enough it could work, you'd need some packing peanuts also to ensure safe arrival. I think the boxes are 9 bucks.

In a box with lots of styrofoam peanut things. Leave lots of room around the PS3. Make sure it doesn't touch any of the sides on the box. It shouldn't rattle around in there at all. (Pack it tight) Also, maybe bubble wrap the PS3 box before you put in in the shipping box and insure it.

That is all...

I think..

the ps3 wont fit in a flat rate box i believe (at least safely). you just put the ps3 in the original box and put that in another box with paper or peanuts to stop it from bouncing around.
it should get there fine with USPS parcel post but you can upgrade shipping if you wanted.
ebay can calculate the buyers shipping costs if you know the weight of the system (I dont)

This.

Also send it USPS Media Mail. I sent a PS3 and games to a fellow CAG about a month ago. The cost to ship was about $7.50.

I agree, I worked for a ship point for ~6 years and have seen many people get burned by zone 8 shipments to California being way more expensive than they thought, they also get hurt by the unexpected extended delivery area fees for the people way out in the country / mountains.

I'd make sure that you pack the items to the carriers insurance specifications. For example I saw a few insurance claims get denied by UPS for using used boxes.

I agree double boxing FTW. Don't use paper, with the weight of the PS3 it compresses and will allow way too much movement in the box.

I shipped a couple out and I found the best way to ship them is to pack the system in its original box and pack that box in a large computer box (i.e. a box that a desktop shipped in). These usually have nice foam brackets in them that will support the ps3 box nicely and usually they are around the same size. You might be able to score some of these at schools or offices or might have one in your attic or basement if you bought a computer at some point. Once you pack it I would fill the entire box with additional styrofoam peanuts to pack it completely. I would wrap the PS3 box in bubble wrap first as well. Also it sounds redundant, but I would write "Fragile" with a sharpie on all sides of the box.

As for shipping, unfortunately it is going to cost a good bit to ship it. I recommend using UPS Ground and buying the extra insurance. There is no way I would ship something like this via the post office, and I would not use media mail as was suggested as a PS3 definitely does not qualify. I know some people claim they can dupe the system and ship anything media mail, but why risk it on a high value item like this? I also would not want to deal with the post office on an insurance claim on an item like this. Don't get me wrong, I'll use Priority Flat rate boxes/mailers for $50/60 games, but I wouldn't trust them for a high value item like a PS3.

If you are going the ebay route, I'd just use the calculators that ebay provides in your auction and pass the shipping cost straight through to the buyer. Or just use a flat rate shipping cost of $30. I think that is around what it cost me to ship UPS GROUND, which included like $600 in insurance. Like I said, its not the cheapest way to go, but if you are selling a gunmetal PS3, your target customer isn't the average CAG looking to get a PS3 for $200 + $10 shipping.
