Whats the point of preordering?

I preorder a lot as well. For me, I like having the games I want paid off ahead of time so I don't have to worry with it later on. I come across some extra cash & instead of blowing it on a game that's out now that I may not really want, I put it towards a future purchase that I know I'll want. It has nothing to do with whether or not I think the game will sell out, it has everything to do with convenience.

And yea, I could wait & get the games at Best Buy and save $5, but for anything I care enough about to preorder it it's worth $5 for me to have it on release - not a week later.
Wow, I feel a lot of hate towards Gamestop here. I work at a Gamestop, and I've never basically forced anyone into reserving anything. All I do is ask them if they would like to reserve a game that's coming out while I ring up the items that they are buying, I don't talk about a game they aren't going to get unless they reserve it because we usually get a ton of copies of games. I work in a very busy store, and the only ones I tell people that we have limited quanitites of is of smaller released games, like Sega GT Online or R-Type Final. And yes, we do get RATED on how many reservations we get, and we also get rated on how many Magazine Susbscriptions (Game Informer) that we sell. We do not get bonuses from Gamestop, if we do, it comes right out of the Store Manager's pocket. I reserve games for one reason only, because I want the game. I know I'm going to get it, so if I throw 5 bucks down now, that's fine.
I don't think it's hate so much as it is misplaced frustration. I have a problem with the fact that my manager gets rewarded for a team effort. Do I not deserve even a LITTLE reward for my integrity and good customer service? I have had people come and shake my hand and tell me how helpful and polite I have been when my manager is being "rude and very unhelpful". Of course, that doesn't seem to matter as the company doles out free systems and giftcards to the Store Managers. Case in point; I scored a 100% on the secret shop over a month ago and have not been presented with the little giftcard they were going to give me. My manager? Got $50 for my work. Is there something wrong here? I have never and will never force a reservation on a customer. I warn them that there may not be many copies of a certain game(ie Disgaea), or that we may stop taking them because we have so many (ie Halo 2). Otherwise, the only time I'll bring it up without actually believing in it is when I'm berated for not getting reserves and threatened with dismissal.

Did the people that preordered Ninja Gaiden from EB get their free items when they preordered or do you get the item when you go pick up the game, cuz I didn't receive anything free so I'm hoping I can pick up a free poster or whatever it is when I go pick up my game soon?

I dont usually pre-order, but I preordered halo 2 because, well, its halo 2, and I wan't to make sure i got it ASAP! haha yeah I dont really see the point in it tho

I love listening to everyone here.

I also feel sorry for anyone who works for gamestop. Being threatened of losing your job for NOT getting pre-orders? That is too funny.

I am a store manager at EB in NH. (anyone here from NH?) I encourage my associates to get pre-orders, but not threaten them. LOL. When my store gets alot of pre-orders for a game, I usually get alot of extra copies for walk-ins. When we don't get alot of pre-orders, we only get a few. Case in point, MX Unleashed. Not a blockbuster, but has alot of potential for my customer base. 1 Pre-order. Besides that pre-order I only received 2 copies for the PS2 and 2 copies for the XBOX. I sold out by 3 pm. Soul Calibur II. I only recieved copies of the XBOX version for my pre-order customers because there was a problem with the other shipment. There were a couple of other AAA titles that sold out fast because no one pre ordered.

When you pre-order a game from a particular company it not only helps you get a copy of the game that you really want but it helps the company get restock. Here is how it works....

EB Games has 10,000 more pre-sells of Ninja Gaiden than Gamestop does. When the time comes for another shipment of games to be sent out from the developer the store that had the highest pre-orders (EB) will get replenished first. Besides that, at least at EB, we get no special reward or anything for pre-ordering games. As a manager I want to have as many copies of a game as possible so I get as many sales as possible but without pre-orders that is tough.

Any questions?

Yeah, I hate fuckheads like that. Look at it this way, you're not really out of anythig because what they promise to give you they never do. EVER. Those jelly pops sure are good though. Damn good I dare say! I like the ones with the Marshmallow ring around the outside of it, I believe they have either mario or Donkey Kong's face on them. $1.29, but fucking AWESOME.

Best buy pre orders .

It doesnt matter if they sell 100 pre orders or 2 pre orders they get the same amount og games the same day shipped exactly the same.

But they always have a limit of usually 50 max on any 1 game.

Theres really No need to pre-order games.

When i went to buy winning eleven 7 the eb guy was like DID you pre order it?

And im like no......

And he gives me the game.

So i guess eventually if they would of sold out of the 20 or so that they had not pre ordered i would of been screwed for a few minutes while i drive to another store.

I don't really buy any games on release day anyways, I wait for them to drop in price, otherwise I wouldn't be a cheapassgamer. No games are worth it that I have to preorder them, and even if they were I have never experienced stores sold out of them everywhere.

I think we've all came to the conclusion that pre-ordering benefits the retailer more than the consumer. Thanks for your further input though. I still don't see a point of a consumer getting a pre-order though, other than the convenience factor, or a bonus.
But why wouldn't you want to help your favorite game store?
Game stores don't care about people. They only exist to make money.
