What's there to do in New Orleans?

hiccupleftovers

CAGiversary!
^^Anyway, the above question. Perhaps some CAG peeps from that neck of the woods can help me out, like I've helped others for Vegas/CAli.

Anything good or special to try out? Any local/regional fast food joints to hit up, restaurants, malls, etc.?

I know of White Castle and Chick Fil-A (we're getting one here in Vegas soon by the way, and there was one in San Diego when i was there) that are there, so I plan on going to them.

I've never been to new orleans but white castle and chick fil-a? that's like going to japan to get a coffee at starbucks.

i mean the french quarter is chock full of new orleans food -
my favorite creole and cajun foods:
aligator po-boys
crab po-boys
lobster po-boys - they're basically just super tasty sandwiches.
fried green tomatoes
gumbo
bouilliabaise
etouffe
bugs (crawdads)
crawfish monica
blackened tuna (or blackened anything)

sweet creamy pralines :drool::drool::drool:

you should find this stuff anywhere in "Nawlins."

Nothing really (although I was working there back in December 2005)

Be sure to grab a Muffaletta from a local sandwich shop, some Cajun food and there's various casinos/clubs around town.

The Garden District is fun to drive around just to look at all of the old, massive mansions.

If you are a psycho or some type of adrenaline junkie, drive over the Huey P. Long Bridge. Bonus points if you do it at rush hour or when the trains are going by.

I'm not going there purposefully for White Castle or Chick Fil-A. It's just that if I'm already spending several days in the area, I might as well try them out. It's not like I have either of them around here. It would be akin to somebody not used to the west going to an In-N-Out out here, I guess.

Any particular place you'd recommend?

I can get that here. Why would I go all the way there just for that when Vegas is the strip club mecca?

White Castle or Chick Fil-A is something you only do if by unfortunate circumstances you get stuck in New Jersey.

Seriously just go to any highly rated creole cooking place (and that doesn't mean Popeyes!!)

i haven't been there since that whole big storm thing

just look for big black toothy women as the proprietors and you should be set (call it racist, but I have never eaten gumbo made by a big black toothy woman that wasn't goddamn tasty)

Another great place for breakfeast (its just like a Cafe Du Monde) is Morning Call out near Lake Side Mall.

A great place for deserts is Angelo Brocato's, they have awesome Cannolis and Spumoni.

I get by there regularly during an annual convention.

Okay, for starters we eat the Original Krystal down south for sliders, not White Castle. There's one near the corner of Canal and Bourbon street.

Cafe Du Monde has gone down hill BAD. Last time I went the owners had sub-contracted out to a group of non-natives, go there you will laugh (Hint: no-one speaks english BUT they don't speak spanish either). Just don't go there expecting a Creole (or even a Cajun experience) The coffee was burnt (couldn't even taste the chicory, that is some seriously burnt coffee if you know what chicory tastes like) and the Beignets (Been-yays) tasted like they were fried in month old fry oil.

However, Cafe Du Monde is a tourist staple you HAVE to go there. You have to go there at least once, even if it's a tourist trap.

There is also a little cafe futher down the quarter that has a Beignets sign out front, it is ten times better than CDM.

Be sure and stop by a confections shop and have a hot Praline, I never knew why people ate them until I had a fresh one (kinda like Kryspy Kreme doughnuts, your like no-big-deal until you get one fresh and hot from A KK store and then it's like sex).

Great Restaurants abound. Head a little outside the Quarter or on the fringes and you'll find better food. Ask the locals, they will tell you where the better grub is.

There are lots of nice little niche places to go for sandwiches, try a local joint like Cafe Atchafalya.

Edit: I think the name of the place was Cafe Beignet. Also try Pascal's.
Also, don't knock Chick-fil-a. People who have never had it or don't get it regularly go crazy for it.
(My sister-in-law makes us go once a day, everyday when she is down from NY)

In-n-out is fucking amazing! I've had it once in my life and plan on having it again when I go back to Cali for a week in August.

Man that really sucks, I might be going back to New Orleans sometime in Late Summer and that was one of the things I really wanted to go do again.

Try the Cafe Beignet I reccomended, it wasn't 24 hours like CMD but it had much better coffee and beignets. I am excited about going back there when we go to the Big Easy this year.

I heard good things about the Ghost Tours and grave yard tours. They get "teh ladyz skeered and hawt." Someone should find the Dave Attell tour of NO and post it, there was good stuff in there.

Tulane is nice to visit, but I'm not sure if that's your thing.

The waterfront is neat too. typical comments about the zoo and aquarium too. Jackson's square too.

I haven't been back since the storm, but some places in the city were a cesspool before and I imagine they are only worse.

Not sure if it is still there..but during mardi gras a couple years back, storyville was a nice jazz club on bourbon st that I would stop into every night.,

Actually, I'm going to be near Tulane. I probably going to check out the campus and look around. I'm staying near there (I think like a mile or two away.). I might go to the zoo/aquarium since I can get in for free, but I'm not sure if I'll have the time to fit it in..
Go to a Hornets game!
I would, but I think they're playing out of town and that I might not have the time.

Can't believe I missed this one. Thanks guys for all the helpful tips! I called up Google 411 to ask if New Orleans had any White Castle's, and I guess I must have been mistaken. What's actually there are indeed Krystal's. Goog 411 actually sent me to White Castle lumber. Oh well....Krystal sounds just as good, I guess.

Any other local joints you guys would recommend? It's funny, but I was looking through wikipedia's listings for local/regional food restaurants, and it doesn't seem that there are too many regional chains in New Orleans. There's a ton out here. Firehouse Subs, In-N-Out, Taco Time, L&L Hawaiian barbecue, Raising Cane's, Claim Jumper, Elephant Bar, etc. are just some of the ones that I know of off the top of my head. I guess there's some advantage being right next door to Cali.

I just wanted to post a thank you to all you guys that offered help/advice. It really was indeed helpful. I want over last weekend, coming back on Tuesday. The town is still devastated like you see on tv. I got to eat at a Krystal's, a Chick-Fil-A, Beignets kick much ass, Muffuletta is an interesting sandwich, and I went to several of the recommendations in the thread. I did that one bridge for the heck of it, but it wasn't anything special really.

Cafe du Monde isn't as bad as the one poster made it out to be. It was actually pretty good. The servers did in fact speak English, and I have no clue whether or not they are native or not. The coffee was great and the same for the Beignets. Central Grocery has the best Muffulettas as I tried them at a few places, but they clearly have the best.
