Okay, for starters we eat the Original Krystal down south for sliders, not White Castle. There's one near the corner of Canal and Bourbon street.
Cafe Du Monde has gone down hill BAD. Last time I went the owners had sub-contracted out to a group of non-natives, go there you will laugh (Hint: no-one speaks english BUT they don't speak spanish either). Just don't go there expecting a Creole (or even a Cajun experience) The coffee was burnt (couldn't even taste the chicory, that is some seriously burnt coffee if you know what chicory tastes like) and the Beignets (Been-yays) tasted like they were fried in month old fry oil.
However, Cafe Du Monde is a tourist staple you HAVE to go there. You have to go there at least once, even if it's a tourist trap.
There is also a little cafe futher down the quarter that has a Beignets sign out front, it is ten times better than CDM.
Be sure and stop by a confections shop and have a hot Praline, I never knew why people ate them until I had a fresh one (kinda like Kryspy Kreme doughnuts, your like no-big-deal until you get one fresh and hot from A KK store and then it's like sex).
Great Restaurants abound. Head a little outside the Quarter or on the fringes and you'll find better food. Ask the locals, they will tell you where the better grub is.
There are lots of nice little niche places to go for sandwiches, try a local joint like Cafe Atchafalya.
Edit: I think the name of the place was Cafe Beignet. Also try Pascal's.
Also, don't knock Chick-fil-a. People who have never had it or don't get it regularly go crazy for it.
(My sister-in-law makes us go once a day, everyday when she is down from NY)
Can't believe I missed this one. Thanks guys for all the helpful tips! I called up Google 411 to ask if New Orleans had any White Castle's, and I guess I must have been mistaken. What's actually there are indeed Krystal's. Goog 411 actually sent me to White Castle lumber. Oh well....Krystal sounds just as good, I guess.
Any other local joints you guys would recommend? It's funny, but I was looking through wikipedia's listings for local/regional food restaurants, and it doesn't seem that there are too many regional chains in New Orleans. There's a ton out here. Firehouse Subs, In-N-Out, Taco Time, L&L Hawaiian barbecue, Raising Cane's, Claim Jumper, Elephant Bar, etc. are just some of the ones that I know of off the top of my head. I guess there's some advantage being right next door to Cali.
