What's with everyone's boner for Skies of Arcadia
Heh, sorry, didn't mean to come off as rude. I just saw it start to deteriorate into a discussion about FF7, and decided to skip all that.

It hit me that Skies was mediocre when I had to start travelling aroudn to destroy/collect/protect (it was a long time ago) the colored crystals to save the world. That's when I realized, "Hey, this story is boring, and I don't even care about the characters. Why should I keep going?" Sure, the sky world was a cool setting, but the novelty quickly faded.

Grandia 2 was the same thing...after a certain point, I just saw sterotypes that had been played out many times before in other RPGs, and didn't care for any of the characters. The combat system was cool, though.
no worries, just wondering.

those are definitely good points about those games - but if you're an rpg person, you're a sucker for that stuff and you sorta accept it (even though I do really get tired of that "collect all 250 orbs" in every game)

my first rpg was dragon warrior and it was the bomb.

I have to agree with you. Seems that more time is place on graphics and less on actual story. Why would be describe something in text when they could show some pretty CGI? The direction of rpgs changed after FF VII.
For me it was the first RPG I beat. And that was FF 3(6). As for skies you either like it or you don't I think people and myself have listed more then enough reasons to account for it's fairly high popularity. As for FF. Myself and many others don't say it's a bad game. It's just that the charecters seem to get shallower and fewer in # the more the game goes on.

I mean look at FF3. 14 charecters and all but 3 had very deep storys. If you knew how to find them as some of you might not have like Shadows dream seqences and waiting to the last second for him and feeding Cid the fresh fish. Sabin, Edgar, Terra, Celes, Gau, Cyan, Locke, Setzler, Relm, Shadow, Strago, and the small charecters like Mog, Umaro, and Mimic. Then there was the returners leader you controlled briefly and oh I could go on for much longer if I felt like it. But you get the point. Undeniably at least FF depth in charecters has gone down and that disapoints me.
Owl: I think you make a very good point. I think, because of their length, it's hard to play more than 2 or 3 RPGs a year, and as such, each one makes a big impression, especially the first, especially if it takes you over 50 hours.

I disagree. I've already played 4 this year and plan on finishing at least 2 more.

KOTOR
KOTOR II
Bard's Tale
Suikoden IV

Plan on finishing:
X-Men Legends
Atelier Iris

Skies of Arcadia...I loved it because I enjoyed the characters. I enjoyed the sense of exploration. I remember getting to Ixa'Taka for the first time and thinking "wow..I'm finally here". lol..maybe that was just because of the high enemy encounter rate but eh. Getting my own ship and crew...and own island. The battle system was medicore, but that didn't stop me from loving the game. Recently I got the gamecube version and played through it for a second time..and halfway through was trying to remember why I loved the game so much...but by the end, when the credits roll (best credits in a game ever IMHO) I had fallen in love all over again. However, I believe the DC version is better. People say the music in that version is better, but I played them too far apart to really be able to tell. My reason for liking the DC version better is simple....my DC even back then was on it's last legs and would only play for an hour or two before it would freeze if I tried to go into the menu. While I was waiting for cooldown, I'd get out the VMU and play the minigame.

Oh yeah, first rpg-like game? Final Fantasy Adventure here. I borrowed it from a friend, and when I got to Kett's and the girl was taken by the vampire I remember asking that friend "Hey, am I near the end yet?" That's what I get for growing up on the mario action type game you can finish in one sitting.

This brings up the age old debate, what is a Role Playing Game? Is it any game which you assume a role and the characters improve over time through combat and/or exploration? Is it restricted to games with menu based combat? Is it a game where you are able to make decisions which affect the flow of the story? Do they require an involving story? etc. etc.

When I think RPG, I think epic story, leveling up character, a party of playable characters, menu-based combat, some form of random battles, and take a long ass time to complete. In that regard games like X-men Legends, Bard's tale, Diablo are more like an action and RPG hybrid which typically possess a less involved story line, little or no partying, a shorter playing time, and more direct control over combat.
