When did amazon start demanding 50 for free shipping

Yup. Sorta.

Order with Free Shipping by Amazon
Orders including $25 or more of eligible books qualify for FREE Shipping. All orders of $49 or more of eligible items across any product category also qualify for FREE Shipping. With free shipping, your order will be delivered 5-8 business days after all of your items are available to ship, including pre-order items.

Done with this pitiful company. They're essentially a subscription service at this point.
That's what everyone says until they have an exclusive item, best price on an item, etc.

Just like the majority of the people who claim they'll never shop at GameStop or Walmart stay true to their word until the next great deal, promotion, price mistake, etc.

Amazon is great. I like their prime service, there have been opportunities to get it discounted, or close to free (Fire Phone deal). I like Prime Instant Video Service, they have a few good exclusives, and a contract with HBO to get older season (3+ years after release). It's not as good as Netflix if you like "trendy" shows, but it is a good supplement to Netflix.

Prime Music is pretty good, and I like the fact that buying most new cd's physically, adds them digitally to my prime music account instantly.

I get about $10 a month in digital credits that I cash out and use/sell on $10 PSN Cards for just choosing the slower shipping option. I'm saving 20% on my preorders for video games.

I'm sure there is more (like the 5% statement credit I get for using my Prime CC) but people will complain for the sake of it.

I wonder how much I've saved in gas and time but not having to drive around to pick up cables, batteries, and other things I might think I need.

I haven't shopped with Amazon in over a year. I can find similar or even better prices on items elsewhere. It seems like Amazon used to be the cheapest but I no longer find that the case. Some people live in the city or work near stores where you can walk to the store to buy any item you want locally so gas isn't a problem.

Whoa, what? How do you buy PSN cards using the promo credit on slow shipping? I didn't know this was possible... I usually have a few bucks saved up before they expire and rarely spend them on anything (especially since I'm against paying for content unless it's heavily discounted) but would definitely use it towards PSN cards.

Use the slowest shipping option available, it will give you $1 credit. It doesn't specifically say but will work on PSN and xbox cards.

I know how to get the credit, just didn't know it was possible to use them on PSN/XBL cards... wish I'd known this sooner. Just got $20 worth of PSN $ for free using promotional credit.
