Where can I find/buy the movie, Battle Royale?

CAGiversary!
As a foreword to the mods, I'm not really sure where this thread belongs so I thought I'd put it in the OT forum.

Anyway, so I went today to a Suncoast to find this movie after hearing great thing on it from CAG but the clerk lady tells me that they no longer carry it due to its extreme amount of gruesome and graphic violence that is portrayed throught out the story. I mostly don't shop there for my DVDs but since this is an anime and they have the best anime selection outside of Fry's (and I also needed to do some mall shopping), I went there. I also didn't think BB would have it since they normally don't have many anime.

I really don't care if it is B&M or online but I would just like to know where I can find it and then I'll ask about deals..

EDIT: Look down below. Very tired right now and really screwed up in my original post.

Battle Royale was never officially released in the US. As far as I know, any major chains (Suncoast/Best Buy) have never carried it. As for deals I wouldn't know since I bought my copy at an anime shop here in Los Angeles.

I didn't think Battle Royale was anime, unless you're talking about a different movie....

Anyways, I know a guy who got it off Ebay.

To my knowledge there was never an Anime...
Only the original novel by Koshun Takami, the Manga, and the live action movies (only the first is any good.)

^_^

Battle Royale was never an anime to begin with. It's a live action movie. In my opinion, the movies aren't that great. There are manga books based on that movie, though.

The book is awesome and worth getting, and the movie is not nearly as "shocking or violent" as some people make it out to be....

You want violence? Pick up the manga

You can get the graphic novels/mangas in any Border's/Barnes & Noble/Fry's/prolly other places like those...I stopped after like 5 or 6, what are they up to now? Is it completed?

Actually it was originally a novel, it caused a bit of controversy when it was first published actually...
Anyways you can get a translated version at nearly any bookstore or online.

They're up to volume 10 already. It ain't over yet......

My mistake, yaeh I'm talking about the manga. But I also meant about the movie....just too tired. really late. I thought that I had seen the dvd long ago and the Suncoast person said they no longer carry it so I just assumed it was released in America.

O.K. So I'm guessing I might have been fooled and that this movie has never seen the light of day in DVD form in America. So will it ever come to America and if not is their any region free or any version of it with subtitles that would work and dvd player. If not is their any other way of obtaining this movie other than through pirated means?
buy it from a foreign retailer and play it on a region-free DVD player
I thought about that but I don't want to buy another dvd player and I"m not sure if the foreign version would have english sub titles on it.

You can find the DVD without a problem at Newbury Comics, which is a mostly-CD chain on the east coast. They usually have several different versions, but the one to get is the 2-disc 122 minute version. It will run you around $25.

It's also a fantastic place to get other import movies as well.

I think they charge $5 for shipping, but the dvd is only $10, so it evens out. I've ordered from these guys a few times, they haven't stiffed me yet.

I own this version and I can confirm it's region 0 (any dvd player) and yes it has english subs. They're good for the most part.

Awesome film, but don't get the sequel, it's total ass.

co-sign. watching the sequel stains the entire battle royale experience.

If you have an independent video rental place near you, they might have it. I was able to rent it on VCD from a place near me.

The store clerk might have been referring to Battle Royal High School, an '80s anime OVA released by AnimEigo in the US.

Of course what you are reffering to is Battle Royale, the Japanese film starring Takeshi Kitano. You can find it (and it's sub-standard sequel) readily available at any of the following online retailers:

YesAsia.com (http://us.yesasia.com/en/Index.aspx)
DVDAsian.com (http://www.dvdasian.com/) - only the sequel in stock
HKFlix.com (http://www.hkflix.com/home.asp)
AznFilms.com (http://aznfilms.com/default.php)
Poker Industries (http://www.pokerindustries.com/)
CD-WOW! (http://www3.cd-wow.com.hk/)
DDDHouse.com (http://www.dddhouse.com/)

DO NOT buy from eBay. I also saw a kiosk at my mall yesterday that had TONS of bootleg HK DVDs. If you find it stay away!

I bought mine off of Ebay. The first one I got was obviously a DVD copy made from a VHS tape, the quality was terrible. The guy had no problem taking it back and refunding my money when I told him I wasn't satisfied with it. The second one I bought was perfect. Original copy with English subtitles. I
have the director's cut. I just wish the extras were also subtitled.

One of my friends picked up the 2-Disc Korean SE which is region 0, and has the original Japanese dialogue with good English subs. (I burned myself a copy, woo)

I'd recommend looking for this version. It comes in a light tan/brown slipcover.

Don't feel bad about not having a good copy of the movie. I'm still stuck with my original release VCD that I bought several years back from Poker Industries (good service, by the way). It's not bad; has Chinese/English subs and Dolby Surround audio. My only complaint is about the white subtitles disappearing when there is a white background.

I didn't know if the movie was as good as I heard, so that's why I bought the inexpensive VCD. I really liked the movie, and want to upgrade to DVD someday, but the several versions is making me a bit dizzy. This version doesn't have good subtitles but has great extras, this other version has good subs but no subs on the extras, etc.

My DVD player can play any region and convert PAL to NTSC without trouble. However, my ultimate preferences would be:

NTSC standard
Good sound and picture (Anamorphic with 5.1 sound)
Good English subtitles

Extras and whether they are English-subbed isn't really much of an issue, but it would be nice to have some good, subbed extras.

All these posts and no one has mentioned that a US SE version is being released on Tuesday (01/25/05). Just wait another day and you'll be able to find it pretty easy...

Umm, it's going to be a while before any American distributor picks up this movie, if ever. Where did you hear about a supposed U.S. DVD release?
Great movie. I bought it off ebay for like $9 a long time ago.
Same here, mine cost about $30 ( had to make sure it was authentic ).

Thanks all for the help. I can't believe there are so many versions of the film. Now I'm afraid to buy it because I'm not sure which version comes with american subs on it or if there is a verion with english subs on the movie and extras.
