The fan in my laptop recently started making loud noises. It seems that any day now it is going to go. I have a HP Pavillion DV 9700 laptop. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement fan? The laptop is out of warranty now so I cannot send it to HP and who knows how much they would charge me. A friend of mine can replace the fan I just have to hunt one down. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's probably dust stuck in the fan which cannot be cleaned with compressed air. I would remove the fan and check for thick dust; I've seen this on happen on quite a few different HP notebooks.

Thanks for the tip.

If the fan does need to be replaced though, any ideas on where to get one?

I've been inside numerous HP laptops before, and I've noticed that they tend to have things connected in there in weird ways, making it a pain in the ass to replace. To be honest, I'm not sure if it's really possible to replace the fan, let alone where to get one to fit.

So my only option would be to send it to HP or get a new laptop?

You can replace it yourself, its normally a plastic housing which holds the fan and has a connector on it.

BTW, I'm assuming you aren't afraid to de-assemble your computer; HP does have specific guides telling you which parts/screws you need to remove when replacing part x.

Yeah i saw the guides. Problem still is of where to get a replacement fan.

Oddly enough it has not made noise today.

Ok cool. I will check it out today. Thanks for all the help.

Assuming your fan is damaged, you can search eBay for the replacement fan you need. I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with a Radeon X300 and the fan died on me. I had to disassemble the notebook to see whether the fan was the short or long version, and from there just place the order.

You (or your friend) will eventually have to disassemble your HP anyhow to replace the fan, so if you don't know what fan you need you can check for the fan brand, model, and / or part number. From there, Google is your friend! :)
