Which exclusive PS2 Games are Quirky/Unique/Not To Be Missed?

Hi folks,

After trying out Guitar Hero in an EB, I finally broke down and bought a PS2 for the holidays. In addition to Guitar Hero, I lined up the following: Amplitude, EyeToy Kinetic and Play, Fantavision, Ico, Katamari Damacy, and Sega Superstars.

What else should I look out for? I know about Rez, which I may get eventually but I'm looking for cheaper or easy to find games. I tend to like quirky, arcadey type titles. I often play with my two boys, who are 5 and 4 years old.

I started gaming with the Dreamcast, hooked on games like Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Hydro Thunder, Jet Grind Radio, Looney Tunes Space Race, Mr. Driller, Space Channel 5, Tech Romancer, and Wacky Races.

I then got a GameCube and our favorite games are Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, Donkey Konga, Mario Kart, Mario Tennis, Pac-Man Vs., Skies of Arcadia (which we still haven't finished), Super Smash Bros. Melee, Burnout 2, and others.

I also have a DS with Ouendan, Meteos, Phoenix Wright, Feel The Magic, and a few others.

I'm looking for games available only on PS2, or PS2/X-Box (which I don't have). If a game is available for Gamecube I'd most likely get it there first.
 
Guitar Hero is so beautiful.

I've always wanted to try out Mister Misquito on PS2. That's a fairly cheap game now. And Mad Maestro. Don't forget about the sequel to KD, "We Love Katamari". I just woke up about ten minutes ago so my brain's not fully functional, i'll come back to this post when I can remember a few more.

Oh, by the way.. since you've never had a PS2 or XB and like racing games.. Burnout 3 and Burnout revenge.. i'm tellin' ya, you'll never play another racing game again.
 
Stretch Panic, Culdcept, Magic Pengel, Technic Beat, The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, Okage... probably some others but thats a start.

Let's see Frequency, Ico, a vote for Rez if you can track it down at a reasonable price.

In terms of games which should not be missed, the Sly Cooper series is excellent and would be appropriate for your boys, I imagine they will be most amused the one liners of "The Murray." Hot Shots Golf Fore! is supposed to be fun arcadey style golfing with 4 player mode. Pick up a few of the compilation packs like capcom collection or midway arcade treasures or sonic collection if you want some classic old school gameplay.

oh, alien hominid! get that for the cube, classic-style 2 player side-scrolling shooting fun.

This will be a bit harder to trackdown and not appropriate for your boys, but Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner (made sure you get the sequel, not the original ZoE) is an awesome mech combat single player game. There are two schools of thoughts with mech games: walking tanks ala mech warrior or graceful fighting machines ala virtual on or gundam. 2nd runner takes the quick graceful fighting approach. Another unique aspect is the story is told by traditional hand drawn animation instead of crappy CG or real-time cutscenes.
 
Disgaea, La Pucelle, Makai Kingdom, and Phantom Brave are some very good (and very quirky) strategy RPGs. All but Disgaea can be gotten on the cheap, but Disgaea is definitely worth it, being by far the best.

The Shadow Hearts games are a bit hard to find, but they're some of the more amusing and quirky RPGs the PS2 has to offer. They're horror themed, but they have a lot of offbeat humor to them. Lots of fun.

The Curse of Monkey Island is a good time if you like adventure games...

There are lots more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Thanks.... I should have mentioned it in my first post, but there's a few games I do know about that don't need to be mentioned. I'm going to wait a bit on We Love Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, and Frequency until we've had a chance to try out the related titles I already picked up.

Someone else mentioned the Burnout games. Since I do like Burnout 2 on the GameCube, I was considering either Burnout 3 or Revenge. I know that 3 is a cheap title now, but should I skip it in favor of Revenge later? (For that matter, is the original Burnout on Gamecube redundant since I have Burnout 2?)

I'm going to have to look up a lot of the other titles people are mentioning, as only a few sound familiar. If anyone provides a little description I'd certainly appreciate it, but lists are fine too as I know how to Google to research titles. :)

Ico - expansive world from the makers of Shadow of the Colossus, mostly puzzle solving with a little bit of combat

Sly Cooper series = action platformer that relies a little more on stealth and cunning to progress as opposed to brute force, quirky humor, cel-shaded. The 2nd game approaches the gameplay a bit like MDK2, there are 3 playable character Sly - from the first game, Bentley - the brains, even more stealthy and has more puzzle solving, The Murray - the braun, his sections are more about combat and fighting off the enemies.

Alien Hominid - based off a flash game on newsgrounds so if you want a sample of the gameplay try there. Handrawn side-scrolling shooter with tons of power ups and a cool art style, quite challenging.

and I already described Zone of the Enders 2.

That's debatable from a gameplay standpoint, while I concede God of War's production values are higher than DMC3.
 
If you were choosing between Burnout 3 and Revenge, definitely go with Revenge. There are some little tweaks in gameplay that make it a far more satisfying game. Ramming into non-racer cars in BO3 means an accident that can slow you down, ramming in Revenge turns the target car into a flying projectile. There's also some really cool modes, more interesting tracks, and just more insane fun to be had. Wait till the post-Christmas season, I know BO3 was around 30-40 bucks last spring (Canadian).

I also second the recommendation for God of War, it's one helluva game.

Forget the original Burnout. Burnout 3 or Revenge is ten times more fun that Burnout 2.
