Which is the best Dynasty Warriors game?

I have always been intrigued by this game series and it has been on my “get” list, but I don’t know the differences between the games. I don’t want to buy the entire series, I just want to get one game. Which is the best Dynasty Warriors game in your opinion? Thank you for your help.
 
Get either 3 or 4. 4 is somewhat better, but I had more fun with 3, and played it to death (and wrote a FAQ for it) I probably didn't play 4 as much because I was so into playing 3
 
DW3 is better.

Better individual story mode = higher replay value
Higher difficulty
Weapons have special abilities linked to them.

The only thing better in DW 4 is the graphics. But everything else felt monotonous.
 
IMO, 3 is the best in the series. I absolutely loved that game when it came out. 4 is also good, but I must say that I had far more fun with 3. 4 just seemed to be missing something or just that the magic had been taken out of it.

Number one reason? The option to use the Japanese Dialogue!!!!! Freakin' A, I hate all the english voice acters the companies here in the states use. Except for Konami.

But get a clue America! People don't like to have things read like encyclopedias. =P
 
IMO 4 is only better if you haven't played 3 yet. The few updates that came in 4 were disappointing (3 new guys!?! come on!), but it was more balanced and some flaws (like that crappy weapon upgrade system from 3 were fixed)

so everyone who's a fan of the series will probably say 3 while casuals will say 4
 
They both are good...i have all of em even the stinky first one for ps1...god was that awful...xiahou dun was a joke in that...anyway besides the point..

Even in 3 the individual story line was also monotonous because the only battles that were different were the small ones..you still fell into the major battles...those battles had nothing to do with the real history of ROTK...thats if you care at all..

DW4 a little more work...you can take paths by choosing which battle you want to fight...more smaller fights and then the big ones at the end of each chapter.....thats as storylines go....

Gameplay is the same, Graphics obviously newer games get a graphics boost..

oh yeah DW4 got edit a general..create yourself in the game...

they are both cheap so why not get both...

Eh, I preferred the weapon upgrade system in 3. Yea, 4's might have been more "fair" (no more of your weapon being inadequate for the level), but I enjoyed searching the levels for new weapons. Other things I liked better in 3, the gate guards always dropped defense, the Japanse language option, and unlocking a character for beating it with each individual character (they unlocked too easily in 4 imo).

Whatever you do, stay away from Samurai Warriors. Far less characters and those crappy castle levels killed that game.
 
3 and 4 and their expansions are all alot of fun. They're better at different things, 3 has some classic levels but the characters are much more unbalanced. I agree with the poster that said to stay away from SW, it's really terrible comapred to the DW games.
 
How about Samurai Warriors? How does that compare to the Dynasty Warriors series? BTW, I'm going to say 2 because it was the first one I played and just because no else has said it yet.

I just read your post, Sheik. There's 1 opinion. Anybody else?
 
I had played dw2, dw3, dw3xl, dw4, dw4xl, and dw4 empire. I loved dw3 and dw3xl the most. If you can only get one dw game I suggest you get dw3. If you have more money to spend get dw3xl. dw4 was ok and dw4xl is better than dw4 because the difficulty is increased. dw4 empire is different than the rest.
 
I played Samurai Warriors on rental for a few days and I didn't like it much. I like DW games better.
 
I think everything looked bigger in dw3 and dw3xl and the lighting effect and the game just feel more exciting then dw4 and dw4xl. I had a lot of crazy fun with dw3 remix with dw3xl.
