I prefer 4. While 5 has more mini-games, they seem more stupid, annoying, and random than the ones in 4. For example, one of the games in 5 is "pick a rope to pull out of three and hope you don't get an anvil landing on your head" or something like that. And I find the whole "saving dreams" theme in MP5 lamer than the regular board game theme.
For some reason, I can usually work out the "Pick a Rope" game. I don't know if there's some subliminal clue, or it has to do with patterning, but I usually have pretty good luck with it.
My advice? Well, people are saying the minigames in 4 are better, but I enjoyed 5's. 5 is also much better if you're going to be playing it in Single Player at all, because the CPU doesn't spend hours constantly buying and using Mega/Mini Mushrooms, and in the main "quest", all three Koopa Kids take their turn at once and the stage only lasts until you've made them lose all their coins.
Plus, the boss in 5 is better than the boss in Super Mario Sunshine. I'm not kidding. It's a three-stage Bowser bossfight, played with traditional platforming mechanics using whatever character you picked (so Peach, Daisy, Waluigi, they can all battle Bowser in a platformer-y setting, amusing when you think about it). And the ending is a little amusing since Bowser technically "wins." (You'll understand when you see it.) I don't remember what you collect/earn, but it's much better than getting doll house furnature in Mario Party 4, I definitely remember that.
Oh, plus DK is relegated to a space, not a playable character in Mario Party 5. I don't think DK ever fit into the party games well, so I was kind of glad to see this, but YMMV.
So, if you're going to be playing a lot of Single Player, I say 5 is the way to go. I haven't had a lot of real multiplayer experience with the Mario Parties, so I can't tell you how to go for Multiplayer.
