I liked them all, and they were all worth playing. Each sequel builds upon and improves upon its predecessor. Whoops, actually, i haven't played Deadlocked. I think that one focuses on the'deathmatch/combat' type stuff, instead of the platforming stuff.
If you can or will only get one, I would say UYA, especially if you want to go online and play competitive combat type games. But the entire series is well worth getting, and having saves from the former ones get you bonuses in the latter ones.
Ah too bad you can't get them all, they all tie into each other but are still understandable even if you haven't played previous ones. I'd recommend Up Your Arsenal, I think it's the longest one and definetly my favorite.
I haven't played Deadlocked though, but I think I'd rather pick up all three older ones before you go buy the newest one for more money.
I've only played Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, and between the two I deffinitely preferred GC. It's worth noting that I only played UYA for its single player, and haven't had a chance to try out its multiplayer. but as far as single player goes, GC is longer, has more level variety, better mini-games, better writing, and as far as I could tell the graphics were identical in both. UYA is still good, but felt like more of an expansion pack than a full game.
Interesting comments here. Thanks for the replies.
It appears to be between Up Your Arsenal and Going Commando. I figured this much.
The reason why I will only be buying one is because I simply do not have the time to invest in this series, I'll likely be buying I-8 for the ps3 and I want a taste of insomniac before that time.
Also, the game endings were already revealed to me by reading the reviews and previews of the newest games, so it's not like I would be missing anything (unless anyone has a serious objection).
Thanks for the input, I'll wait a while longer before I decide, however, please feel free to add anything else.
Looks like I'm going with Up Your Arsenal, thanks for the replies everybody.
I would like to play all the games, but I just don't have the time to invest in that many games, I just needed the best taste of the series, though I would like to play them all it's not plausible for me at this time.
The lack of any targetting system in the first R&C dates it quite a bit, though for its time it was in a league of its own.
GC had the biggest leap in gameplay from one R&C game to another, so it's still my personal favorite. You gotta love the little blue dudes.
However, UYA is the one to get if you're new to the series, because it has the best graphics of the "real" G&C games and its replay value is amazingly high.
Get Deadlocked only if you're (1) online/broadband and want an arena combat game or (2) a R&C completist. Deadlocked actually decreases the number of weapons available to you, although the customization options and deep levelling-up system make up for this a little. Still, the story is meagre and the platforming/exploration elements are completely gone. You'll be in the middle of a level collecting bolts or destroying a bunch of enemies, when suddenly the game screen freezes and you get dumped into the "MISSION COMPLETED" screen because you unknowingly completed some set "objective". It's annoying as all hell.
