Which two of these rpgs would be best to get?

DQ VIII, Star Ocean TTEOT, Shadow Hearts (first or FTNW)

Your suggestion would be nice as well.

By the way, I am not a hardcore RPG gamer. The rpgs I currently have are Bard's Tale, Dark Cloud 2, FFX/FFX-2, Okage Shadow King, Parasite Eve 1/2, Shadow Hearts Covenant, and SMT Nocturne. Now I do know that Nocturne is meant for hardcore RPG gamers but I didn't know that when I brought it.

DQ8 requires A LOT of level grinding, so if you arent into that, dont get it.

I enjoyed Star Ocean, so I would recommend that for one of your games, I haven't played the Shadow Hearts games, so I can't comment on those.

I would have to say out of those, DQVIII and Shadow Hearts (might as well play the first one). Mainly because Star Ocean will literally take you "till the end of time" to beat, and since you're not a hardcore RPG gamer I would pick the latter (but it's fun nonetheless). Note that in DQVIII you might have to level grind in order to stay in league with the enemies in the next areas. Also, DQVIII is a traditional RPG in every aspect out of all the current gen RPGs so it's not hardcore at all. However, there are other good RPGs on the PS2 not mentioned here, for instance, Radiata Stories isn't too hardcore and neither is the Grandia (my favorite battle system ever) or Tales series.

If you do end up choosing DQVIII as one of your picks let me know, I've got it for sale on my TL.

Are SPRG considered hardcore? I read GS review of Grandia 3 and also heard mixed reviews of Grandia 2/3.

I'd definitely get Dragon Quest VIII and definitely skip Star Ocean. Star Ocean had potential, but had way too many flaws to be worth considering.

Grandia II is awesome, Grandia 3 a lot less awesome. I heard there is something wrong with the PS2 version of Grandia II but I haven't heard what.

Lotta graphical glitches. The CGI scenes look grainy as hell, and a lot of spells are messed up. There's some other issues, but I can't remember them...

Ouch....

Makes me wish I still had my DC copy of Grandia II...but someone stole the disc

DQ8 is really good, but only if you enjoy a challenge and lots of level grinding.

Star Ocean I thought was okay, but I got tired of the battle system.

Shadow Hearts 1 was good, if you can forgive the 'old game' feel of it. It's worth playing though, if you've played Shadow Hearts Covenant, since it's basically a direct prequel.

Shadow Hearts FTNW is a good game with great gameplay and decent challenge. Boss battles are lots of fun! Story is pretty good.

DQ VIII is the most accessible. The battle and leveling system a are easy to pick up and understand. It's also the most visually appealing of the three. But it's also very slow going and there's lots of level grinding, so you're not going to beat it in 20 hours. It's definately a longer commitment. On the other hand, Shadow Hearts (1) has the best story and moves at a pretty fast pace. The battle system is a little harder but more involved. Stay away from Star Ocean if you're new to RPGs.

Are most of the rpgs I have turn based? If thats the case, what about some real time system games to take a look?

Star Ocean TTeoT is real time which is one of the reasons I really liked it. People in this thread are saying its really hard, but I didn't think it was THAT hard.

Radiata Stories is also real time (by the same people that did Star Ocean) except I liked Radiata Stories a lot more. Its only about 20-30 hours long as well. I would recommend that as one of your games.

I recommend DQVIII. I spent over 100 hours on my first play, and immediately started a new game after beating it. I got bored of Star Ocean in under 10 hours.

Dragon Quest 8 is awesome. Don't let the tough difficulty in the beginning turn you off, because it's a great game once you get into it.

Hell any of them are worth playing though. I would say grab Dragon Quest and what ever of the others intrest you the most. Don't really see why people bash on Star Ocean it is good, though it takes a little bit to get the hang of it.

Yeah, I thought Star Ocean was great.

But since the OP doesnt want a "hardcore" RPG, I dont hink DQ8 would appeal to him being how long it takes to beat, and all the level grinding. I think Radiata Stories would be perfect for him, but thats his choice.

if you enjoy tactic RPGs i suggest picking up Disgaea 2. i just got it not too long ago and i can't put it down. there's so many new aspects to this game from the first. custom character classes along with over 200 pre-made classes. you can have up to ten characters out and in combat at once. which also means you can do ten-man combo attacks on one character doing MASSIVE damage.

so for all of you hardcore RPG fans that like a little variety in their fantasy-life, Disgaea 2 is for you.

I'd go for DQVIII. I think that Star Ocean is just too long. I am into RPG's (wouldn't call myself "hardcore") and I didn't finish it. Shadow Hearts I didn't find very satisfying, I think it was too young for me. I don't mind level grinding though, so if you do maybe you don't want to follow my advice.

What are the hardcore RPGs for the PS2? Do I have any beside Nocturne?

Um, first what is a " hardcore " RPG? .

I got to the point in Star Ocean where I was doing the same combo with Fayt in every single battle for like five hours. That got annoying, and I was sick of helping some stupid old civilization instead of getting on with the main story. Maybe that was the main story. If it was.... then way to mislead me, Square Enix.

Haven't played the new Shadow Hearts... have the first two collecting dust on my shelf but what I have played of them is awesome, the combat ring is cool.

Dragon Quest is old school and difficult. The graphics and music, and, well, everything, the game just makes me smile even when I get my ass handed to me. Definitely my pick of the three.
