The Bush administration's top federal procurement official resigned Friday and was arrested yesterday, accused of lying and obstructing a criminal investigation into Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff's dealings with the federal government. It was the first criminal complaint filed against a government official in the ongoing corruption probe related to Abramoff's activities in Washington.

Although he's pretty much unknown, this guy is pretty important: he was in charge of the department that has ultimate responsibility for all government purchases. They have him on something comparitively minor, lying about meetings with a lobbyist, but its impossible not to wonder exactly how much corruption his lies were covering up...

An update on this story: Safavian has now been indicted on 5 felony charges.

The Bush administration's former chief procurement official was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements and obstructing investigations into high-powered Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The five felony counts in the indictment charge David H. Safavian with obstructing Senate and executive branch investigations into whether he aided Abramoff in efforts to acquire property controlled by the General Services Administration around the nation's capital.

Abramoff is a grade-A hole; I want to see him get charged with something. I'll gladly advocate a repeal of anti-cruelty laws for him.

They should have learned from the canadians. The last time a conservative party (tories) held power they went done in a flame of corruption. When mulroney, then prime minister, left office his approval rating was 10 percent, some polls were even lower. Then again, that's kinda the liberals problem at the moment.

We need to make an itemized list on all these scandals. Just off my head I can come up with at least 10 that reach directly to the White House in various ways. Can you imagine how hard the line would have been drawn against Clinton?

I don't have to imagine; more was done to impeach Clinton because he had his cock sucked than anything the Bush administration has done thus far.
