LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!!! It's time for the main event the video game match of the millenium, the DS vs. the PSP!!! In this in depth head to head match, I'll go punch by punch, round by round to find out, dare I say it, which is better. Before I begin, please note, the view expressed in this report is mine only at this current time. It could change at any moment. Anyway, let's begin!
Round 1: hardware quality!
Ah, this is very important. Everyone wants their new system to be strong and durable. As with all Nintendo products, durability is key with the DS. The system is strong and durable. The touch screen has an extra protective cover ing and the system itself is just well built. The buttons don't stick or are too loose, the touch screen is responsive and the system has the wonderful "clamshell" design to keep the screens protected. Nintendo as always shows here how they can build strong, long-lasting systems. The PSP on the otherhand is good in this category, but it' suffers from a few faults. One of the nice things about the PSP design is that sony put the screen behind the outer shell covering. Unlike the DS where the screens are exposed during use and could potentially be scratched, the screen is hidden behind the plastic shell, so damage to the screen is near impossible. They system itslef feels durable but there are a few problems. First the analog nub, while good, is somewhat strange. It just doesn't feel right. The nub feels restricting and just not right. It's not nice and flowly like the normal analog sticks. It's just not right. Also oddly, the square button was not set properly. It either sticks or doesn't push down right. Something is just wrong with the button and it could be troublesome to the durability and the use of the system.
Winner: DS!!!
Round 2: Control/ Layout
The controls are necessary for enjoying games. The DS controls and layout are nice but not perfect. The complete lack of an analog stick causes some wonky controls in games such as Mario 64 DS. Also sometimes using the touchscreen could be cumbersome with using the controls on the system. PSP is not perfect either but I feel that it outdoes the DS in this area. Even though the problems with the analog stick and square button are there, the system just controls better. The analog control is really necessary with 3D games and thus is great here. Also, the buttons just seem to be placed perfectly and are comfortable.
Winner: PSP!!!
Round 3: Launch games.
The launch games with these two systems are essential to the enjoyment of them. The one thing that is so fundamentally different is the games on these two systems. The DS games are new interesting ways of looking about gaming. Using the touch screen and voice options really allows for new gamplay experiences. The DS games are pure originality. They are fun, different and interesting, even the few mini games found in Mario 64 DS or all of FTM show just how much potential there is for the system. The PSP on the otherhand offers a gaming experience like we know today. I can't even begin to explain how cool it is to be able to near ps2 style games on the go. It's great. But, the one thing about a portable system is that it needs to have different kinds of games. I am fear that the system will boil down to ports of ps2 games. That is my main concern at the moment. Playing launch games such as Ridge Racers and MGA is great. But I feel concerned after playing them.
Winner: Tie!!!
Round 4: Coolness
Ah.... this where the PSP rules. The system is just sexy, it's the Pamela Anderson of portable systems. Just seeing it makes anyone turn heads. The clear glossy outer covering just makes the system look great and the whole interface is just great. Nothing better then blasting some mp3s and then instantaneously switching on MGA. I feel that the PSP is kinda what the N-gage wanted to be, but failed speculously. The PSP is a true multidmedia device that is great. I could go step by step about the user interface but I'll save that for another time. The DS on the otherhand is certainly no slouch, but it just isn't as cool as the PSP. I think the DS does a fine job, but PSP just goes above and beyond in this category. Hands down, PSP is the cooler system.
Winner: PSP!!!!!
Final impressions: At this moment in time, I have to say the PSP is the better device. But, I do feel that DS has greater potential. I think if developers can really make use of all the great innnovations the system offers, The DS could easily edge out the PSP. The fact is just that, the PSP is the cooler system. It looks nicer and just offers more options outside of gaming. Be it movies, mp3s, pictures or whatnot, all you have to do is save it to a memory stick and your good to go. The PSP is great and may be a system to finally bring Nintendo some healthy competition.
Winner: PSP!
Honorable mention: DS may have more potential.
