Who eles is addidicted to buying video games?

This site turned me into an addict. But seriously it's always been a dream of mine to own a large amount of games. I can still remember when I got my Colecovision and my mom would only allow me to have no more than 5 games in the house at one time. Now that I'm older and I have a good paying job I can buy all the games I want. Plus growing up I didn't have as much variety as gamers do now. With so many good games out it's hard not to buy lots and lots of games.

Every morning I wake up and check my bank account to see what's posted and what hasn't. The next step is straight to cheapassgamer.com to see if I can catch some early morning deals before work. And I usually check back 3-4 times while I'm at work just to make sure I don't miss out on anything.

I am very addicted to buying games and DVD's, but I don't waste money on games I know I won't enjoy or even play. Even if it's a $5 clearence game marked down from $20, if I don't have a good enough interest in it, I won't buy it.

i dislike unopened/unplayed games, there is just a sadness there, like a friend waiting at your door to come in you just forgot about.

So I try never to have more than 3 unopened games at any one time- which curtails my spending somewhat. Also, when you buy a game and it turns out to be a dud, i find that lessens my desire to get another game.

Then the rational side of me thinks, if its just gonna sit there unopened, most likely it will have dropped in price again once I eventually get around to playing, so why not wait for THAT pricedrop.

Still I have a couple dozen highly enjoyable games I keep bumping down the priority list to finish, so im still an addict, just less so than some of you others

I'm a lot more careful with my DVD purchases. I have to know before I buy it that i'll watch it more than once or twice. The only exception i've made in the last 2 years was when I bought Return of the King: EE. My cousin bought me the first 2, so I felt compelled to buy the third one for completeness.
I have several games for Christmas that my brothers got that I never even played including Dark Angel, State of Emergency, The Bouncer, and ESPN NBA 2K5. Despite this, I have bought more games since including a DS with Mario and Driv3r. I still want to buy more because I still have holiday money. Am I alone, or do other people share this problem?
Check my list in sig and buy a feew of my games with that christmas scratch. Youll e able to get alot for cheap :)

My fiance smartly got me Netflix for my birthday last year. Because of it, I'm very careful about what DVDs I buy. She's saved me a lot of money. For example, I would've bought the AWFUL Starship Troopers 2. ::shudder::

I was wondering about if you went cold turkey like this (so to speak) whether or not you could "cheat" a little by renting/borrowing games you didn't have or if you'd have to strictly play just the games you already owned before attempting to quit.
Jason "loonyboi" Bergman, formerly of Shacknews now with Rockstar games, took a pledge to abstain from buying games for 3 months over the Holiday 2003 season. He made it all the way through to January 9th, 2004, when he bought Beyond Good and Evil after it dropped to $20.

Here's his blog post about it.

I've tried to stop coming here because it's made me even worse with buying games, but this place keeps sucking me back in. I have about 70 current gen games that are unplayed. :( I have probably 150 DC and PS games that are unplayed. Damn you CAG!

Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place for help/advice but here goes: I have a huge collection of PC games that I have never played. The hundreds of cd-rom games sit in a huge box that takes up tons of space. I am now thinking of placing all of these cds into those white, paper cd sleeves to minimize space. (I am scared of putting them into a case logic folder because some of my cds stuck to the plastic and were perhaps scratched) As I think about purchasing these sleeves, however, I realize that I have so many games that I have never even played, or played longer than a few minutes worth. When I think about weeding out my collection, I find it difficult to let go of games because I think of potential what ifs... what if I want to play it later?.. what if its worth money, etc.

Anyways, with the addition of a PS2 and xbox this year, my gaming collection has increased dramatically across all systems, yet I keep on buying new games! I think its this web site that fuels my fire, yet I keep coming back here, since its irresistible to avoid buying cheap, good games. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will be moving in January and I really need to cut down on stuff to move. ON a side note, do other game collectors also collect other things too!? I guess I have a collective/hoarding personality since I also have over 500 dvds, 300 cds, old gaming magazines, old toys, comics, collector cards, books, etc. Ahhh, I have too muc stuff! Anyone have some realistic advice?

I have four large boxes of games I've never touched + a new pile forming next to the 4th box. Last time I counted I was at 70-something but the number has grown since then. I spent my paychecks on the PSP and games instead of paying for my college tuition. Yeah, I like buying games, hehe

I am. I have tons of games I haven't played (over half of my current gen collection is untouched). Half the time I buy them cause I like the cover (talking about 5 or 10 dollar games here). I think the sports card collecting mentality has taken over (my family used to run a sports card store).

Dvds are my main weakness as well. I used to be a game buying addict but one day I just sat down and looked at them. Dramatically cut down on buying and now i'm playing some of those titles i've had for a few years now that I never touched.

I am I buy more then I play. Sometimes I go to ebay and ebgames.com an just look at games and if I see something that I might like I go and read what other normal people say about it then I either buy it or won't. I don't always listen to people though.

Me me me! My sister gave me $1000 for b'day present and I spent it in less than 5 days for PSP, wipe out, ridge racer, 1 gb MS produo, hori screen protector, a VGA box for my gaycube and my new unopened geforce 7800 video card.

it has been exactly 30 days since my last video game purchase. (pre-CC clearance purchase) i'm not sure how much longer i can hold out; either that, or i'm shaking the habit.

I think the first qualification for being a CheapAssGamer is also being a BrokeAssGamer, either from buying too many damn games or from continuing to buy more! Dammit!! Stop me!!

"Confessions of a compulsive shopper

NEW YORK (MONEY Magazine) - Kristine Rogers is an addict. The 36-year-old suburban mother of four doesn't drink, gamble or take drugs, but she is an addict nonetheless.

Her compulsion is shopping, and her very particular obsession is Gymboree clothing -- cute, colorful outfits for the 12-and-under set that, in Rogers' hands, have catapulted her family into an emotional and financial tailspin.

Rogers first recognized she'd crossed the line from merely being an enthusiastic shopper to genuine illness about 18 months ago, when Gymboree held a clearance sale in which every item was priced at $7.99.

"I was literally shaking, trying to get my daughter dressed to get to the store," Rogers recalls. "I went to three or four different stores that day, I had a friend on the phone going to a Gymboree near her to buy for me, and I had my mom online ordering too. I grabbed clothes my daughter didn't need. I bought four of the same coat in different colors." By the end of the day, Rogers' compulsion had cost her $800.

At the height of her addiction in 2003 and 2004, Rogers estimates that she spent $400 a week and eight to 10 hours a day, every day, shopping for Gymboree outfits on the Web. "

Replace "Gymboree outfits" with "games" and this becomes a pretty scary article.

CAG has broken me of the spend more than I can mold. I didn't care about $50 games 4 times a month, no big deal. However I was getting 6-7 a month at that price and you started to notice you had less money. When I found CAG my game counts would hit 10 a month at $20. The full price game for me is a rarity, maybe 3-5 times a year. System launches don't count, you have to pay full price if you want it first.

I am really compulsive with games. I can't tell you how many I have I only saw the boot up/attract screens for. I got Valkyrie Profile this month in great shape and haven't touched it beyond the anime opening. That's true of most games I buy now, I have over 300.

Someone said they go out and buy every game posted here then go home and play Warcraft? Well, I'm kinda like that but I also buy any PSone game worth mentioning if I find it within 50 miles of me. Then I come home and play Halo 2.

In 2001 I didn't care about any game except PSO. The PS2 launch came out and I didn't care because Sega released 4 new PSO items the day it launched. To me, it was enough of a reason not to buy a PS2! I can now picture buying a PS3, 5 games and other accesories, Halo 3 and not getting the PS3 out of the box and having the games sealed for a month.
