Surprisingly, I've actually never had a watch long enough to where the battery died. I'd try changing it myself, but I can't twist the back off. Apparently, from what I read online, the watch I have is somewhat complicated on the inside. Can I trust some person at the jewelry department at K-Mart to not bust my watch? Or should I go to a jewelry store?
Who/what is the lowest person/place I should trust to change my watch battery?

Changing a battery shouldn't be more than $15-$20+ battery cost anywhere so if you are worried about it, take it to a nice jeweler.

I change my own.
Jeweler, get a receipt and keep it.
The twist off backs are vacuum sealed though.. so after you get it back put it on and put it in water(if its water resistant type, and probably is).
If the interior fogs up then they messed it up..
I had a jeweler replace my battery and then when I was kayaking this summer it fogged real bad. i took it back and they had broken the internal seal and it cost them around $125 to repair it... I paid $7 for the new battery and install.
They were trying to sell me a new diamond ring for my wife when I went in to get it the second time..
Dont go to a Kmart.. Take it to a well established jeweler and get that receipt.

Doesn't this depend on what type of watch you have? For an Omega, you wouldn't go to K-Mart, and for a Timex, you wouldn't go to a jeweler.
If you go to one of the kiosks in your local mall, they should be able to do this for you for ~$15 or less. They'll pressure test it and most will even replace the seal (forgot the technical term...) to keep it water resistant. I'd actually prefer this to a jeweler unless you can watch the jeweler do his deed. Those kiosk kids have no place to hide if they screw up!!!

if you take it to a place that sells knock off watches like the swapmeet make sure they dont switch the watch backing. they like to keep these to make there knock offs look more real
