Why are New Releases coming out on Saturday?

I believe they are doing this to capitalize on the fact that many people are either on vacation, or have received new HDTV's, Blu-Ray players, etc,and are now looking for recorded media. It boosts their end of the year numbers. However, this has happened throughout the year as well. Most likely industry "testing" our buying habits.

Probably to catch the after Christmas rush. You know, you're in the store returning something, you have the cash in hand, and on your way out you see, "OOh a new DVD, that looks good, I'll buy it." Or something along those lines. I still think that if its ready by the 27th then they shouldve released it before Christmas though.

Good point about receiving HDTV or Blu-ray player as a gift... but these releases could also be gifts too.

So, sales price only effective for just 1 Day?

they did the same thing for Thanksgiving. New releases were Monday, not Tuesday because retailers were closed on Thursday. Sunday was the official release date of new releases this week to catch the weekend shoppers.

You know if the studios are trying to cash in on the day after Christmas returns then shouldn't they be releasing this stuff on the day AFTER Christmas... and not the one after that? At that rate they might as well just release the stuff on Tuesday as per usual.

Paramount is moving to Sundays. Nintendo style. KFP was Sunday and the Duchess is on a Sunday too.
It's better for us, since the stores will have too many streets dates to keep up with, they'll just end up breaking them for most titles.

Most likely it has to do with shipping the product to stores and making sure everyone has it. Since Christmas is a holiday, there's generally no deliveries that day, hence not everyone may have had the movies yesterday. Although, my local BB had Eagle Eye on the shelves yesterday morning, probably because of the fact that at this time of year, street dates are not really enforced like they are the rest of the year.

That's one of the main reasons Tuesday has always been the de facto release date, so stores could receive product on Monday to make sure it's there for release date.

Were these recent releases? Because if that's the case, it's not because the studio is moving all their product release dates to a different day, it's because of the holidays and this time of year.

There have been all kinds of crazy release dates lately, it's just about getting product onto shelves ASAP. It will go back to normal after the first of the year.

lawdood hit it on the head... because of Christmas, there was no way to get the product in-store before a release date of the 26th and if there was, they likely would've just released it before Christmas.

So, yeah, it was to catch the after-Christmas shopping (which, by all accounts, seems to be huge this year), but they couldn't guarantee product in-store by the 26th. Hence, saturday.

More and more studios are moving to alternative release dates to capitalize on weekend traffic. I was reading in Video Business recently that one studio which I can't remember is contemplating/already decided it is going the route of Nintendo and doing all releases on Sunday in the near future.

The article went on to say that it could have negative effect because people won't have a standard day for New Releases like they do with Tuesdays now. It will also be easier for stores to break street dates and have studios really unable to police them anymore.

I never understood new releases on Tuesdays. Fridays or on the weekend would be much better, but Tuesday? I mean, it's Tuesday. It's not even the middle of the week. It's just...Tuesday.

If I'm not mistaken, Eagle Eye comes out today.

yesterday. ;)

I won't argue with you there. I can't tell you how many times from my years in retail I have had to explain to customers that Title X doesn't come out until Tuesday. Of course they always then grab the ad, point to the title... then I point right at the "Available Tuesday" right below it.

I do understand why the industry does release stuff on Tuesday since otherwise Tuesday would be the weakest sales day of the week. However to me its no longer working since those people who would of bought it on Sunday (since they assumed it was out) might go "screw it" come Tuesday. Of course since the bigger new releases keep doing well right out of the gate on Tuesday I don't think the industry is going to change this in favor of getting those few extra sales outside of this time of the year.

I'm just waiting for certain stores such as Wal-Mart or Best Buy to start paying money to get an exclusive early release date such as Sunday where as the other stores will have to wait until Tuesday to street date them. I'm not sure if they would even be able to do this but I see this in the future.
