Why Does ANYONE Start SMOKING?

I started because I was going out with a girl who did. Never got addicted, can't stand the stuff these days, especially living in California with their non-smoking law in bars, restaurants, etc. Oddly enough, all my geek friends tried smoking only after I tried, so I wonder who's more weak-minded.

clearly that girl owned all of you.

Like many of you I didn't understand it either. I had several friends in college who all of a sudden took the habit up. I didn't understand why. The last couple years of college seemed like an odd time to succumb to peer pressure.

Being the curious person I am, I bummed a few cigarettes off them to see what was so great. I smoked them. Nothing happened. Then I tried one more, and really inhaled it, deep into my lungs, and suddenly mere seconds later I totally understood. The nicotine buzz was incredible. Suddenly I was fully awake, and in a perfect state of euphoria. It was enough to show me why people do it, and it was also enough to scare me into not doing it again.

Well I cant remeber when exactly I had my first cigarette or if I really enjoyed it, but I do know it just felt like the thing to do at the time, Ive always been a social smoker/drinker I dont get addicted to anything really aside from gaming and anime, so why did I start....I suppose because it adds to the atmosphere a bit.

Also I find a ret to be relaxing after a stressful day, good shot of tequila/rum does the same. Or maybe because I think it will relax me it does and its all in my head, or perhaps something to do with the chemicals, regardless it calms me down.

Smoking does reduce the risk of Crohn's disease flare ups.

However, probably not worth the increased risk of heart attack, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, lung cancer, bladder cancer, renal failure, infertility.... just to name a few.

(sorry as a health care provider, I feel obligated to put my "smoking is bad" two cents in)

I dont smoke and i dont drink.

not that i cant, but i dont want to.

nothing good comes out either so why bother wasting money and health
Most of your post was just opinion, but i'd just like to point out that somebody reaking of alcohol is no more unpleasent to me than somebody reaking of smoke.
I don't think this is really a fair comparison, the reeking of smoke vs. reeking of alcohol. If somebody reeks of alcohol, I actually think that smells worse than the smell of smoke. (Though I'd rather have someone drinking in front of me than smoking in front of me... the smoke is just too overwhelming for me.) But that smell of smoke really sticks. The folks I know that smoke ALWAYS smell like smoke. Their homes smell like smoke, and their cars smell like smoke. People only smell like alcohol when they're wasted, which for most alcoholics isn't 24/7.
I started smoking because I enjoy it. Thats really all there is to it. It is completely legal. I don't smoke around people who mind it, I don't smoke around minors, or in eating establishments. I don't cough and puff and dance around with a Kabuki style 12-sided cigarette-holder while preaching bloody murder to the world.

I started smoking when I was 21, after my first legal trip to the local watering hole, and trying a boge that was offered to me by a friend. To be honest, after the first hit of it- I knew I really enjoyed the action of smoking a cigarette. It gave me a calming effect, and it certainly went well with the substantial amount of alcohol I drank.

Smoking has been a part of culture since much longer than Euro-centric cultures tend to believe it has, and they have been for the most part, alright because of it. Much like everything else, Smoking should be balanced with the rest of your life-- That way it keeps it's calming effects, and you negate substantial health risks.

I don't smoke a pack a day, maybe a pack every 2 weeks, heaviest during Friday nights out with girls and guys. I still run 2 miles everyday and lift, and have noticed no problems with my ability to exercise. I smoke light cigarettes in the way they were meant to be smoked, with your lips not engulfing the entire filter.

I am happy with the fact that I smoke, as it grants me opportunities to engage and talk to people I may have nothing in common with-- helping a lady light a boge, or talking to some grizzled hardened man over a cigarette or cigar over a beer is an enlightening experience, for the conversation that you may have with him or her.

I certainly appreciate and understand the important facts that regard heavy smoking, especially of american brand and manufactured cigarettes (they put quite a bit of excess harmful chemical in them to ease taste and exhallation). In that regard, I think it's important for all smokers to know how to make their own. Natural Tobacco is harmful, but much less so than manufactured brands-- it's also much more rich, and the entire process dissuades the idea of "chain-smoking", as it takes quite a bit of time to make a good cigarette.

Tobacco is an interesting drug. Scientists have no idea of it's true origins, it is one of the only natural plants that effects vary due to speed of use (For you smokers, this means.. if you smoke a cigarette, it will act as a powerful stimulant-- if you take your time the drug instead acts as a very mild depressant).

I am now 26 years old, have smoked for 5 years, and hopefully have given you some reasons as to why I started and why I continue to. I am certainly not trying to glorify the act of smoking, as it WILL lead to substantial health problems from overuse-- But I am also not trying to demonize it either.

Find your own personal balance, whether it be through smoking, exercise, drinking, recreational drug use, or anything else. The most important thing to remember is that in moderate to light use, any legal vice can be beneficial, socially bolstering, and relaxing.

Life, as we all know, is hard. I just don't see the point in cutting out all pleasure in favor of getting an extra year or two of life.. something which may be very depressing as naturally our bodies will fail despite the best efforts of science.

My 2 cents, take it as you will.

That's the best post of the day. Very insightful. Thanks.

I've never smoked tobacco or marijuana, and i've been peer pressured pretty hard (still am)... I just skipped the gateway drugs and went to LSD, ecstacy, etc.
See that's the thing. Death is inevitable. So why go out of your way to speed it up (unless you don't care about life and are suicidal)?
DING DING DING! We have a winner. Too bad it's so damn expensive to smoke.

Smoking is a great stress reliever and unlike alcohol you can smoke and work, drive etc.

The problem becomes after a while you get addicted and like any addiction the results of over use become painful. It's the same thing you get with all the alcoholics who want to stop but can't except it's even more dificult to stop smoking over short periods than it is to stop drinking for a few days.

I was thinking, tobacco was a normal way of life no more then 30 years ago especially before 1970. Everyone did it and even commercials between tv shows, had the tv actors promoting smoking. back in the 20's and 30's cigars outsold cigarettes. Samuel Clemens, Sigmund Freud were know to smoke at least a box of cigars a day. that is 20-25 depending on the manufacturer. What I am saying is that it amazes me how quickly something could become socially unacceptable. many things do, but smoking is being banned in some city's in public places. very amazing next they will be banning flatulence's for the output of methane that some people expose to others.

That's why I have sex instead. More fun to have sex than smoke. Especially if you're having sex with Natalie Portman. ;)

Where do you keep your time machine? And do you go back a day earlier each time so it's like new?

But ... but ... Natalie isn't 12 anymore. And she may feel new, but you could be her first over and over again. Who wouldn't want that?

Well, I suppose I could kidnap Natalie now and time travel to when she was 12 and have a 3-way. It won't be incest but more like masturbation. I mean, she'd only be fucking herself ;)

Too late, this is jaykrue's clone speaking. We've cloned ourselves a thousandfold so it's virtually impossible to kill us all and thanks to quantum physics, we've actually allowed the time machine to have a secondary ability - dimensional travel. So by the time you read this, all the Natalies in the closest thousand dimensions have already been kidnapped with more along the way. Soon all Natalies from all existences shall be mine... er, ours! BWAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!eleventyone11
Hey man, share!
I'll let you borrow the time machine and you can have 9 year old Natalie IF she isn't hot yet. ;)

Meanwhile I'll collect Natalies 12-the current in 6 month intervals.

Just hang Natalie from a helicopter and fly over a cliff and watch as the thousands of clones run off the cliff and die. :D
