when i plug my ipod mini into the computer, it sometimes works, but that is very rarely, i just got it, on tuesday, and i since then it has only connected to i tunes twice, but the drive shows up as a external drive everytime

i don't know how to better explain it, so if you have any questions please post

i am running on usb 1.1, my computer is kind of old, i think that that is the problem
i think i need something like this

but i have never opened up a computer in my life, so i have no clue what to do, is it easy?

please help me

thank you

Will your computer support the Dock? That's the quickest and easiest way to connect and update your iPod. Plus, it's always charging while in the dock and the computer is on.

what kinda port is the dock? usb? firewire?

also, i don't really feel like spending the 40 bucks on the dock? whats is advantages on the usb cable it came with?

I'm pretty sure firewire is faster than usb 2.0 so maybe you should buy that instead. Plus it will charge your ipod while it's connected. The dock doesn't do anything the firewire connection can't do. I have a dock but I don't use it because my ipod won't fit in it with it's case on. You can install the card yourself if you know how to use a screwdriver. Just unplug everything before you open your computer up.
You should write apple customer service because your problem might not be your USB connection anyway.

Actually USB is faster than FireWire, FYI.

USB 2.0 Speed: 480M/Bps
FireWire: 400M/Bps

Yes, that card will do it to give you USB 2.0 on your PC. There are cheaper alternatives on NewEgg.com and ZipZoomFly.com that work just as good as the Belkin card.

If you're running Windows XP, I suggest installing Service Pack 2 if it's not already installed. Supposed to fix numerous iPod issues.

If you look at the numbers alone, USB 2.0 is faster then FireWire. If you measure it in actual real world usage, FireWire is generally faster.
