(for this generation). "…and will also be one of the most expensive. People say this every year, but Fall 2010 could potentially be the best holiday season for this current generation of consoles. You have no less than seven heavy hitters coming out between September and December; Halo: Reach, Fallout: New Vegas, Gran Turismo 5, Metroid: Other M, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City, and Sid Meier’s Civilization V. That’s at least one game per major system! And there are still more games coming out in those four months. You still have Fable III, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, Call of Duty: Black Ops, LittleBigPlanet 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, GoldenEye 007, et cetera. And the list still goes on, but that’s enough for now."

I think this may be the best year in gaming, period. I think the other contender was either 98 or 97, can't remember.

But it may even be surpassed next year as well 0_o

I like how every year is the best year in gaming and there is no way for the following year to match up with it. Seriously, I remember hearing how there was no way 2010 would top 2009... what, 9 months ago?

Well what are the standards here? Just popular shit? Or the most awesome and influential games of their respective year?

Because 1998 we had:

Alpha Centauri
Unreal
Starcraft
Tribes
Thief
Half-life
Fallout 2
Rainbow Six
Grim Fandango
Baldur's Gate
Zelda:OOT
Xenogears
Soulcalibur
Tekken 3
Pokemon Red and Blue
Metal Gear Solid
Gran Turismo
Banjo Kazooie
Resident Evil 2
Sonic Adventure

2009?:

Uncharted 2
Street Fighter IV
Demon's Souls (eh, probably not)

I mean what are you guys putting up on pedestals for 2009? Borderlands? Modern Warefare 2?

I guess I could put Batman: Arkham Asylum on there but still, anyone who called 2009 the best year ever only did so because they thought Halo: ODST should be on there or some other nonsense (maybe I'm forgetting some amazing ones, but the point still stands).

Let's look at 2010:

Bayonetta (arguable)
Mass Effect 2
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII
God of War III (arguable)
Super Street Fighter 4 / Blazblue: Continuum Shift
Red Dead Redemption
Starcraft II
Super Mario Galaxy 2

Safe bets:

Gran Turismo 5
Civilization V
Fallout New Vegas

Might be amazing:

Halo: Reach
Metroid Other M
Fable III
Final Fantasy XIV

I think if 2010 plays out in the most optimistic manner, it can be a decent contender. Better than 2009 for sure though.

Only game in the OP that is a must-buy for me is MVC3, and I don't think that's even coming out this year.

The only things I'm looking forward to this year that come to mind:

-Scott Pilgrim vs the World: The Game (just released)
-Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (September)
-Dead Rising 2 (September)
-Dead Space 2? (Maybe this year?)

Bayonetta was released in 09 in Japan, so I'd have to throw that out. ESPECIALLY since Best Buys had it in stock in December 09 too. I think it's a good game, borderline great, but 2 levels are absolutely terrible and you have to play one of them to have the best fight in the game.

Also, while Goldeneye might be a good game, I think reviewers are intentionally going to shit on it just to say 2 things: #1 - Wii exclusive shooters suck, #2 - See, Goldeneye isn't as good as you remember

Games that I think will be overrated
- Halo Reach
- Fable III
- Fallout New Vegas
- Call of Duty Black Ops
- LittleBigPlanet 2
- Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
- Dance Central (In the sense that 'this game alone is worth $200')

Games that I think will be genuinely fun/great
- Kirby's Epic Yarn
- Disney Epic Mickey
- Castlevania Lords of Shadow
- Civilization 5
- Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

Even though there might be more quality games this year than in 97/98, I don't know if you could say it was a better year for games because there doesn't seem like something new will come out gameplay or storytelling wise that will "evolve" gaming.

Honestly I'm not as excited about this Fall as I was for the first half of the year.

Also, I didn't think 2009 was anywhere near the greatest of recent years (except for Dragon Age, which is possibly my favorite WRPG ever). For me 2008 and 2007 were both much better than last year, and also 2 of the best years ever in gaming (for the record, 2004 and 1998 are also at the top of my list).

Wow. I completely agree with your placement of every single game on those lists. The only thing that could probably surprise me from there is LBP2 if it actually has good gameplay this time around and not just a good level creation tool.

Nope. It's early next year as far as I know.

I'm looking at it from the perspective that Halo: Reach will be the last Halo game Bungie does (for the time being). GT5 has been in the works for 6 years, something fans have been waiting for just as long. We aren't going to get these types of games again this console generation.

I only think 2010 has the potential to be "amazing" if you own a Wii. I havent been extraordinarily enthused by any of the games on the 360 this year. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know everybody is shitting flowers over Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, and Red Dead Redemption. But even though I own every one of those games, I just cant seem to convince myself to start playing them. I had no such problem last year with the likes of Assassin's Creed 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum.

But Epic Mickey, Kirby's Epic Adventure, and Metroid Other M are all games that I'm looking forward to. Another 'game' that I'm sure is off everybody's radar this year that I'm interested in at least seeing is EA's Active take on the NFL Combine. That seems like a neat way to leverage the exercise genre with their NFL exclusivity.

I guess I'm sort of excited by Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, but I fear that the online community for that game will last a month at best. Other than that, the only other 360 game that jumps off the top of my head is Dance Central, but I dont think I'm gonna drop close to 200 bucks (150=Kinect, 50=Dance Central) just to play it.

Very excited for the Wii holiday line-up. Otherwise it's Fable III and maybe DC Universe Onlie if it doesn't suck. It would be awesome if the 3DS came out this year, but they'd need a really killer launch selection for me to buy right away, as historically launch selections have been terrible.

fuck this stupid fall.

For the first time ever I wish I had a Wii.

I'm looking forward to Vanquish (thought it was due to be out this year, but Amazon says 2011, so this may not fit for 2010), Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, and LittleBIGPlanet 2.

There are some that I'm cautiously optimistic about, such as Bulletstorm, Enslaved, Front Mission Evolved, Quantum Theory, and Atelier Rorona.

I'd be excited about LBP 2 if I had the time. I barely have time to play games, much less try to make them.

Let's see... I'll grade each title using my "Give a damn" grading system. I have nothing better to do at the moment. I only went by the games the OP has listed.

Halo: Reach - A
Fallout: New Vegas - F
Gran Turismo 5 - B
Metroid: Other M - B
God of War: Ghost of Sparta - A
Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City - F
Sid Meier’s Civilization V - F
Fable III - F
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II - A
Call of Duty: Black Ops - D
LittleBigPlanet 2 - B
Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds - AAA (too bad it's not this year)
GoldenEye 007 - D

I'll let you in on a little secret before you guys go insane, I hate the RPG and RTS genres.

The only games I'm looking forward to and that's only if I can scrounge up the games to trade towards them and GS has some insane bonus promo going at the same time are:

Enslaved(cautiously optimistic bout this one, but if it's Fallout 3 w/ prettier surroundings, then it can get fucked cuz I HATED FO3 w/ a passion)
Mafia II(will wait for a $20 price for this game since I still have Just Cause 2 to finish up n don't need another action/shooter/sandbox-y game)
Dead Rising 2(meh zombies, not paying more than $30 for this)
LBP 2(haven't even finished LBP1 as of yet, but I will...eventually. Games like this aren't quite as amusing to me as they once were(see: Cool Spot) )

IMO, I feel the rest of 2010 is kind of weak compared to last year. There are some games I want for sure, but I feel the awesome stuff was released in the first half of the year.

I've actually been feeling the opposite. As the year goes on the games coming out are becoming increasingly more interesting. Halo: Reach wasn't even on my list about 2 week sago and now it's pre-ordered and I'm eagerly awaiting it's release. Same with Fallout New Vegas and Dead Rising 2. GT5 has always been a no-brainer, as is F1 2010.

Every year is always touted as the best year in gaming.

Course I dont worry about years in gaming, awards or any of that stuff. I buy what I want to play when it comes out and I enjoy it and thats the end of it.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to Castlevania and Vanquish (I've recently put almost 40 hours into Bayonetta and still am truly amazed by it).

Fable 3 looks pretty good, and I love the idea of an Industrial revolution setting, but I'm really going to have to read up on it before I commit.

I was just thinking that things seem just a tad dry this November and December on 360, but October is jam-packed this year.

There isn't much for me this Fall. There's just not enough originality. It's just all sequels. I was initiallly hyped for Epic Mickey, but they changed it so much from the original concept (Google "Epic Mickey Concept Art" for something amazing) that I lost the desire for it.

Maybe something will change my mind, but I'm not counting on it.

I just can't wait for 2011.... Dead Space 2 and Gears of War 3. (plus Rage, Brink, BulletStorm, Deus Ex, Crysis 2, GR: Future Soldier, Portal 2, MvC3, Mortal Kombat, etc)

for the end of 2010 tho, def. getting Halo: Reach. And considering these:

Fallout: New Vegas
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2
CoD: Black Ops
Dead Rising 2
NBA 2K11

Worth mentioning:
Max Payne 3
LA Noire
Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom
Two Worlds 2
Arcania: Gothic 4
Def Jam: Rapstar

Skipping:
Fable 3

Bold means definite. italics mean I probably won't get it, but considering. While my list may seem like a lot, I've had bigger list before (like the first half of 2010 was larger in games I really wanted, same with the last two years during the Fall).

There's honestly not much I'm truly excited for. Halo: Reach, Fallout: New Vegas, Fable 3, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood etc. will all probably be good and I'll play them. But nothing I'm really stoked for until Gears 3 next spring.

But I'm also in an "off" period in my on/off relationship with gaming and haven't touched a game in over a month, so maybe I'll get out of this lull and more excited about some of these games in a couple months.

Games I'm looking to play this year:

PS3:
Medal of Honor (comes with frontline on ps3)
GT5
LBP2

360:
HALO: Reach
Fable 3

MULTIPLAT:
Fallout: New Vegas
Black ops

Next Year:

PS3:
Killzone 3
Twisted Metal
Infamous 2
Resistance 3
Last Guardian

360:
Gears 3

Wii:
Zelda skyward sword

Multiplat:
Deadspace 2
Rage
Ghost Recon: FS

2011 is already better for me

1) Diablo 3 (if its out)
2-5) Nintendo 3DS along with some games.
6) Gears of War 3
7) Ghost Recon 4: Future Soldier
8) Silent Hill Whatever
9) Marvel vs Capcom 3
10) Deus Ex Human Revolution
11) Portal 2
12) Max Payne 3
13) Mass Effect 3 (if its out)
14) RAGE
16) KOF XIII
17) Torch Light 2
18) Test Drive Unlimited 2
19) Catherine (US version should hit 2011)
20) Kingdom Under Fire 2
21) Borderlands 2 assuming it gets announced and comes out

Other games I have not even considered: Elder Scrolls rumored being worked on, New Call of Duty, Zelda Skyward Sword and all the unannounced E3 games.
If I had a PS3 I would have even more options.

ah so Portal 2 and Max Payne 3 are next year? I had them down as November of this year for some reason

edit: okay nevermind, I have Portal 2 coming out 2011 but Max Payne 3 this year, hm

Still not a bad fall lineup regardless. I spent most of my money from quarter 1/2 this year, so little money to spend in the holidays. Things will be even worst for 2011 if something gets delayed.

I want to pick up Castlevania Lords of Shadow but my budget is already past due with my pre-orders.

I think this year gaming is great. I already preordered Final Fantasy xiv, COD: Black ops( to plkay with friends, and Little big planet 2 limited edition and plannign to get dead rising 2, GT5 and assassin creed brotherhood from goozex shortly after release.

I know people love to hate on Call of duty but it look nice and simple to play. I tried medal of honor beta on 360 and battlefield: BC 2 and both game look pretty ugly and sluggish during online play.

Not too bad of a holiday season... if only so you can analyze the success/failure of move and kinect. Dead Rising 2 is something I'm really ooking forward to, Medal of Honor and COD Black Ops look good but since I'm an SP guy they'll probably be rentals (it'll be interesting to see which one rips off Modern Warfare more efficiently though). I'm iffy on Assassin's Creed and Fallout NV... they kinda seem more like expansions than new games, but I'll probably be giving them a shot. That's it really... I think 2011 will probably be a bit better, alot of 2010 IMO was about semi-sequels, ports, etc.
