Why liberals are so condescending?
Why do you generalize so much!?!

There are many teas that I would drink before coffee, but nothing beats a hot straight french roast!
Alright more specifically, chai > coffees i've tasted.

My brain still hurts whenever i think about how this group has hijacked the symbolism of the Boston tea party.

I have no doubt that many of them were religious in one way or another, but religion was treated differently back then. It seems people were able to compartmentalize better. They seemed to know when to leave religion at home/church.

thats sad gareman, considering how poorly she looked after her appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher. Paul Begala schooled her.

That's an excellent article with a lot of well-made points. But the author is going to garner sympathy and support from the left; he has many more on the right to convince of his case.

but i'm sure we can write those off as honest mistakes by a very worn out hard working community organizer who misread a teleprompter.

just for laughs

That is a VERY weak counter argument.
Do you REALLY believe that Obama thinks there are 60 states? Obviously, he is tired. If he wrote down on his hand "they is 50 states" then yeah you could compare. But again, that is specific data not a broad idea such as "earth." Of course everyone should know this specific data.

And he may have read corpse man from the teleprompter. A lot of times, they input a phonetic pronunciation or attempts at that in the prompter. And is the word "corpsman" even something that everyone knows? A broad issue? Especially, one that he stands for?

You need to learn to compare apples to apples. Apples to oranges happen when folks are embarrassed and have to make up shit.

I don't like Obama but even I can admit he is a smart person. Palin and Bush are dumb. And Palin has Dubya EASILY beat. You might as well put that some other pageant chick like this one below and cons would defend her and believe she is smart.

Apples and oranges are very similar fruits, and a comparison of the two is infinitely more interesting than comparing two of the exact same fruit. What's the use of comparing one apple to another? They're the same. Everyone knows they're the same. They both taste like apple, shocking, compare different things instead.
I'd like to ask a different question that takes this issue of condescension from another angle (despite the Atlantic article Msut linked pretty much handling the issue expertly).

Where are the conservative intellectuals? The conservative thinkers? Where are the analogs to the Paul Krugmans, the Chomskys, the Howard Zinns - and of the past, the Saul Alinskys? Sure, George Will is not a blowhard, and Buckley is gone, lamentably. So who takes their mantle? If we want to have political, intellectual debate and not the WWF, and not talking points and empty political memes, we need to have intellectual fodder. But people have always favored charismatic authority (like Glenn Beck and Limbaugh) over traditional functional leadership like a Buckley; the former are far more entertaining (though few moments trump Buckley threatening to slap Chomsky in his "goddamned face" on television, haha).

The Presidential Q&A from a few weeks ago exposed the political *leadership* of the right are unprepared for anything even remotely resembling intellectual discourse. The Tea Partiers can scream and shout slogans and shout down those who disagree with them, but they can't go point-counterpoint without having their lack of knowledge or comprehension exposed.

So it's not condescension because the political right as an institution is devoid of ideas. There are plenty of ideas. It's that the people who identify on the political right do not possess an intellectual comprehension or understanding of those issues, and come prepared with the verbal equivalent of a blunt piece of wood to a gun fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PEIrZO069Kg

Pay particular attention to Chomsky's argument here, as I think it's rather relevant to any political era, including our modern one. And I'll be damned if I don't get all giddy inside hearing words like "equanimity" used on television, as I have a personal belief that our ability to communicate using English has significantly deteriorated over the past half century, largely because television is no longer showing too many programs like Buckley's Firing Line.
I'm with you on this. I went to a panel discussion/debate with Richard Perle and some lefties on the Islamic World and the US post 9/11. It was some PBS sponsored event that was part of some big week long event on TV. Anyway, I was thinking, "OK, Perle is going to be there and some other people I don't recognize so it should be an good intellectual debate." Well, long story short I was so dissappointed as Perle just showed he was an ideologue and just sounding like a broken record to good questions that were raised. He ended up leaving like 10 minutes early saying he had to leave. Wow, that was just icing on the a cake. The right is absolutely devoid of intellectual debate. I think the Republican moderates are scared for their party.

Anyway, thats a great clip. Buckley was pretty decent for a Republican but you see how he is trying to downplay Chomsky's very legitimate point.

Sorry, I was MIA in this discussion and apologize for bringing the discussion away from cheese.

I really don't believe that saying came up with what you are saying in mind. You are joking right? Sarcasm is hard on the net, so I will let that slide. Would apples and barley suffice? Or they are too plant based? Lets compare to venison. No, both animals... Rocks ok? Or both earth bound?

So! He IS a secret Muzzie!!!!

Haha. Thanks for sharing that.

Reminds me of all the code Rush Limbaaaaa uses. #2 is superbly indicative of right wing double meanings. Leave it to the Onion to give some laughs and truth.

Rush Limbaugh Returns

Rush Limbaugh is once again in the national media spotlight, this time for saying, among other things, that he hopes Obama and his economic program will fail. What other incendiary comments has Limbaugh made about the president?

 • "Now, I'm not saying that Barack Obama's a Muslim. But I do think he masterminded the 2004 Madrid terror attacks."
 • "America should be terrified of Barack Obama's skin color—whoops, I mean socialist agenda."
 • "The president's so-called energy plan is nothing more than a carefully crafted initiative that clearly reflects his thoughtfulness and high level of education."
 • "What is it with these black presidents, anyhow?"
 • "Rahm Emanuel had my keys stolen. I swear, they were right here this morning."
 • "Each night I pray that a released Gitmo inmate will kill thousands of Americans in a bloody massacre, just to teach Obama a lesson."
Infographic-Rambaugh-R.jpg

 • "If I saw Barack Obama's children walking down the street, I would hide behind a mailbox or a tree or something and then jump out and scare them."
 • "I wouldn't advocate overthrowing the government, but I would certainly not object if some of my dumber listeners picked up arms and stormed the Capitol."

 • "Let me make this absolutely clear: Obama! Taxes! Abortion! President! Hussein! Socialist!"

It is sad and she did get schooled. But she is quickly becoming the voice of reason for many young republicans and center to the right people.

I call for a time out to resume food condescension.

New food: Apples

Jazz apples own your ass. Fuji apples are backup.

GO.

I'm really liking pink ladies these days than galas and nothing beats a nice granny smith.

Anyone tried those grape flavored apples--grapples?
they taste like children's Robitussin infused apples.

You would recognize a crab apple, Kog.

I like Pears, but they tend to be so juicy that their just too damn messy to eat in the office at my desk--which is about the only place I'll eat an apple.

Well I think her biggest magnet for center to right people and young republicans is the fact that she has thrown almost all social conservative issues out the window. This is 2010, not the fucking 1950s.

Yeah, but the problem is that young people on the right and left (if college republican and democrat student organziations are any indication) spend time arguing, protesting etc. about social issues like gay marriage, abortion, death penalty etc. much more than real issues like taxes, size of government, foreign policy (aside form anti Iraq/Afghan war protests by the dem groups anyway).

So I'm not optimistic that she'll have much impact when those kids are watching Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly etc. just as much as their older counterparts in my experience.

The intellectuals have to exist somewhere, though. But even the print media's been taken over by blithering idiots like Jonah Goldberg. That's where a differential in condescension, if it exists, comes from. We have to debate with people like Jonah Goldberg like that's the best y'all got? - and the frustration comes from said blithering idiot's effectiveness with the populace.
I demand that this thread be renamed to "Why are Liberals so condescending?/CAG Official fine foods/drinks thread"

But that's both the question and its answer, which will lead to very little discussion.

To get in touch with heartland values, I hereby vow to dine on a "Tombstone Pizza" for dinner.

EDIT: To bring up my liberal cred, when we lived in Cincinnati, the wife and I would go here every fall: http://sites.google.com/site/roustersapplehouse/

Get krispy's for eatin', get jonagold's for bakin' pies. And two half-gallons of cider, no doubt.

Shitty pizza is the best! Don't get me wrong good pizza is well good, but nothing beats tearing and burning the shit out of the roof of your mouth on a thin as cardboard 3 dollar pepperoni store brand pizza after a 4 or 5 beers!

I'm such a pizza snob. There is this little italian place here owned by a guy who is a former NY pizzeria owner. Dude makes the best pizza i've ever had.

In my hometown there is an awesome shitty pizza place. It is the only place open past 9 pm (besides bars..maybe the video store if that still hasn't closed for good). It's the type a place were one night you could get the best pizza ever or the worst pizza ever. Also the always hire underage kids and the horror stories I heard about that place only makes it more delicious. Any where from an entire job position consisting of cutting mold off of shit to them selling acid and coke out the back door.

Awesome.

There is another place here that opened up during the recession called "knead dough" (get it?) and it's awesome too, the garlic bread they have is good enough alone.

I made stuffed chicken tonight. This is where you get chicken, wrap it around jarlsberg (gruyere if you have it) cheese, then wrap it up in prosciutto (which for some reason I couldn't find and had to substitute serrano), cover it in bread crumbs (Panko also works), pan fry it on all sides, and then stick it in the oven until the chicken is cooked and the cheese is all gooey and melty.

Yeah, basically a homemade cordon bleu, but man is it good. Serve it up with carrot fries and homemade garlic bread.

Debating making rice krispies for dessert.

LIBRUL SY-EEEEEEEDE

bread's done
